^^Yep. If you want the AI glory, you have to play the game a little bit. Right, there is lots of room between your knock around jeans and a hooded sweatshirt and an evening gown! Casual can be cool! But I think you have to show a little effort.
Sonika on the other hand - what was she doing in that evening gown last night?!!! Was it a dress of her culture perhaps? THAT seemed over the top - she is going to get the “lounge singer label” !!!
That said, Phillip Phillips pretty much stuck to his jeans/khakis and plaid shirt over a tshirt for most of his competition year. It worked! Love him.
I’m still mad that they had two amazing and beautiful red-haired singers and had to send one home. Heaven forbid the redhead population is over-represented. It happens in every competition.
Yeah, I’m not sure who this night was for - the Idols or the contestants!
I think the judges (or the show) had their minds made up on some of them before the show even started - you could just see a disconnect on their comments.
So staying/leaving spoilers for tonight:
Staying:
LaPorsha
Gianna
Avalon
Sonika
Thomas
Mackenzie
Jeneve
I am really surprised that Stephany did not make the cut. She is not any worse a singer than the rest of them and she’s really the only one who comes close to the total package. I wonder if the judges will have a final save to make a top 15 instead of 14?
Jeneve needs to lose the costume. And LaPorsha’s hair was a comical distraction tonight. And I can never remember “other country girl’s” name either!
Went to the taping of AI duets which will be aired next week. The contestants were better than last nights show. Also fun were Jordan Sparks and daughtry. And as a crowd with much chanting and pressure, we were able to finally get Ryan seacrest to sing for us off camera
@abasket – i loved david cook & taylor hicks – but have bought some DC music (and no TH). In fact i’m going to listen to his version of billie jean right now!
@abasket,
Being hypercritical, I usually notice things that I don’t like rather than things that I really like. So I had to think long and hard about your question. I guess the performance I liked best was Jordan Sparks and Manny. Also, I forgot how much I liked Haley from a previous season. She was great.
At AI tapings in the studio, the judges are far away from the audience members. So at the commercial breaks the judges are basically surrounded by hair and makeup crew. But at the Vibiana venue, the audience was maybe 5 feet away from the judges. Since the audience was so close, Harry, Jen, and Keith basically talked to people during the commercial breaks or signed autographs for audience members. And they rarely got their hair and makeup retouched.
I agree with the judges that most of the song choices tonight were not spectacular. Dalton is my favorite and has been since his original audition. I don’t really care which of the rest of them goes through.
Caught bits and pieces of the show, and saw that the last contestant, Olivia Rox, got all the praise and appears to be the producers’ anointed one. And I can understand the enthusiasm on the part of the people who hope to make money out of a successful Idol when they see a tall, pretty, 16 year old blonde who can sing (especially since it’s been quite a while since an Idol winner made money for anyone). But there’s something about her tone I really don’t care for. She sings on key, which is more than you can say for a lot of the contestants, but to me she sounds fakey and affected (like her stage name). I feel like all the teen singers would benefit from more time to develop their instruments and find their true style, but Idol really seems to like’ em young this season.
I agree with you about her tone. I thought she was really nasal in her upper register. And I don’t remember her first audition or from Hollywood week. Did they show her a lot?
I finally managed to watch last week’s show with the idols, and that was interesting. It struck me how very talented all of the idols were. Even ones that I didn’t think we that spectacular during the show, they all must be doing a LOT of singing! Caleb sounded awesome. Reuben, he is amazing! Why is he not all over the radio? Or is he, and I’m not listening to the right stations? Scottie has always been good, but grown up now and such a performer. I thought Lauren Alena (okay I never get her name right) was also fantastic. It seemed a little over the top how she was flirting with Mackenzie so much, but I think that she is such a sweetheart that she was trying to be nice.
LaPorshe needs to lose some of that hair. Come on, cut it down a bit, she looks like she’s wearing a dead animal on her head. With that voice, I don’t want to be distracted looking at how her hair looks. I didn’t think Avalon was that good at all, and I didn’t understand all the praise she received.
