American University also has EA.
Thanks, @tjd0829! I updated the post.
Just sent in our ED application on Monday. American has been her top choice from the very beginning so really hoping she gets in. She also likes Fairfield, Bentley, Marist and U of Vermont, but those choices are far behind American.
GPA: 96.67 (unweighted)
SAT: 1380 (700 Math/680 English)
ECs: National Honor Society, Animal Rescue Club, music (acoustic and electric guitar), tons of community service with pet shelters, summer internships as an office assistant at a building supply company (managing web site and social media, billing, answering phones), part-time job during the school year.
Major: Psychology
This is my 2nd in college. I have a son who is a sophomore at Rutgers, majoring in Journalism and Communications.
FWIW I will be shocked with that GPA she doesn’t get in ED. They had a smaller than anticipated class last year and really like ED applicants. They will be looking to make sure this year’s class is plenty big.
Fingers crossed for her!
I hope you are right! She will be crushed if she does not get in. My son did not get into his first choice, but he at least had a few schools that he liked almost as much.
Seriously I have my fingers crossed for her!!
My kid is applying EA - lower GPA than your DDs. They do have a decent weighted GPA and all in range for school (though lower end).
I really LOVED when I visited. Kid really liked it too, but not enough for ED. They are considering some majors that American doesn’t offer, too, so will have to wait until all the EA and RD dust settles! Luckily already in to their favorite safety (UNH through niche).
I think our kids are twinsies! S25 submitted EA and for an atypical major at American. Also similar re: GPA and in at UNH!
They must be VERY close in what they like…
Mine also has UVM, Marist on their list and almost had Bentley and Fairfield! Like we took Bentley off the list last week
Marist is on their list. UVM was on and then off because S25 decided it was a bit too far from home. Their rule is no more than 5-6 hours by train.
Oops! I was looking at the other poster who mentioned UVM:) and Marist etc.
But totally get distance - we had some drop off for being too close, or too far!
Sounds like a lot of overlap for all of our kids!
I think I like Bentley more than she does. LOL. It’s the smallest of all the schools on her list, perhaps too small for her. And she doesn’t love the fact that it is primarily a school for business majors, and she’d be focusing on psychology.
Fairfield would be 2nd choice, I think. Then maybe Vermont. I loved Marist, but she prefers a school closer to a city. Part of the appeal of American for her is the proximity to DC. Fairfield and Vermont have small towns close by, at least. Marist kind of felt like it was smack in the middle of residential areas.
Best of luck to all! I keep telling my daughter that you end up where you are supposed to end up. My son applied to 10 schools, got rejected from his first choice and waitlisted at his second. Got into his 3rd choice but decided he didn’t love it when we went for admitted students day. Rutgers was #4 out of the 10 he applied to…and now he says he can’t imagine himself anywhere else.
Mine ADORED Marist when we went - liked the river, the trains, the history of the area, but I think it is not the best of them to actually live IMO. However their call! It was very pretty ON campus. We do have a (somewhat distant) relative who went and loved it (about 20 years ago admittedly). Kid loved Fairfield and UVM when we visted, but Fairfield dropped off list- I think the religion turned them off (despite other relatives who went there and their reassurances you’d barely notice) In end I think Fairfield and Bentley were both a little financey-businessy for them (though they actually are interested in that topic some - but not as a major).
We shall see…
hey everyone, forum mod here. Just a gentle reminder to please keep discussion in this thread on topic (American University EA/ED).
3.61 Uw GPA (13 Honors, 3 AP), SAT 1360 (710 math, 650 verbal). EC include marching band with leadership roles, theater tech crew with leadership roles.
wants to study Asian Studies/international studies with a Korean concentration
she will be applying EA because we can’t commit ED without knowing about any merit aid. But American is one of her top 2 choices
S25 applied EA. 3.6 UW GPA with 2 Honors, 6 APs, and a strong upward trend to a 4.0 junior and senior year. Applying TO. Many EC and leadership roles in and out of school, including student council and model UN. Strong recs include their AP Govt teacher and the school principal (who only write 2-3 per year). Large, urban public school. Wants to study Religious Studies and Poli Sci.
One odd thing: while everything on the application checklist in the portal is green and listed as complete, it still says application incomplete at the top. S25 wrote to admissions a few days ago to check why but has not heard back. Does anyone else have the same?
