American University Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2025 Admissions

I would recommend having your student call or email their admissions officer directly (if he emailed the general one previously). The office just hosted their preview day on Sunday so they’re likely inundated with requests.

When an ED application is submitted, are first quarter grades seen by the admissions committee? Sometimes a student has a B or B+ in a quarter but finalizes an A on their transcription, so would not want a dip in first quarter only to count against an applicant.
Thanks

I can’t remember if American asks for Q1 (some colleges request this, some do not).

My kids HS automatically sends Q1 grades to all schools where a transcript has been sent. Whether a school looks at them or not :man_shrugging:

This depends on what a student’s high school is sending as part of the transcript. I don’t believe that AU requires Q1 grades. That being said, senior year grades don’t count as much precisely because they aren’t finalized. If a student has a B first quarter, that won’t count against them if they’re typically an A/B student. However if they had a D or F, that would be cause for concern.

Specifically first term grades of A+, A, A, A-, A-, and B+
Taking 3 APs
Current weighted GPA 4.51 with no prior Bs for any year. Top 5% of class.
Worth submitting for ED supplement? for merit?
or not bother

Students don’t get to decide what grades are/aren’t submitted, its up to the high school and what they put on their transcripts. That being said, those are great grades, so nothing to worry about.

First quarter grade sending is optional at this high school - guidance counselor asks whether the student would like them sent. The question is would sending this help ED admission or boost merit chances, or hinder since it is the “first B”, or make no difference?

Interesting, never heard of grades being optional to send. Either way, a B+ is a good grade and truly will not make any difference, especially if its only for the first quarter.

we decided to submit them

Son applied EA to American about 3 weeks ago, wants to study Political Science with Data Science. He has received emails asking if he would like to consider switching to ED and the most recent one was earlier this week was from the school of public affairs thanking him for his application to their school and to check them out while a decision is still being made. Almost forgot, he also received an email regarding AU Honors. Has anyone received such emails? Not sure what this means though. His Stats (GPA: 3.93, SAT 1400, several EC and is an actively involved in Model UN and Model Congress)

Kid got similar emails (though from different school - applied to another one), including honors college, and no way my kid gets into honors there;)

D25 applied EA for stats/data science. 3.7 UW/3.93 W, 720 Math, 680 English. 10 APs. Also loves languages (takes two foreign languages her senior year–one AP and one level 3).

We’re on the West Coast, but American has good majors for her and she wants to be in a major metropolis.

She has received the email asking her join ED, but she is not interested in ED.

My son, also targeting poli sci, received the same emails and ignored them.

No ED1 date released yet, correct?

My son and I attended an AU financial aid panel earlier this week, and they said ED 1 decisions would be sent before the holiday break. Son applied EA and they said that was still scheduled for sometime in January.

To keep things organized, please use the thread I’ve created to post admissions decisions when available. Please keep this thread to discussion/questions only.

Just got an email that said that ED1 decisions will be released tomorrow afternoon. My daughter is freaking out. She’s not going to get any sleep tonight. Plus, tomorrow is her birthday, so I’m really hoping for a yes.
