An Interesting Dilemma

Okay, here we go.

We talked last night, and it’s possible that I’ve been portraying them in this awful light, but I DO realize that they want what’s best for me, and they’re really just scared that Evansville won’t get me to where I want to be and that I’m making the wrong decision. They’re coming around to letting me go to Evansville(I think), they’re calling Mr. Lutz today, we’ve agreed that the grad school debate is off the table, and I think it will all work out. Their ONE concern( We’ve narrowed it down to one…) right now is that Evansville is in the middle of absolutely nowhere(I’m from Indianapolis, I know this.) and that the contacts and networking opportunities I will get from NYU are infinitely larger that those in Evansville. However, my argument back is that Evansville grads ARE working right now(There are two on True Blood) so its obviously not impossible, and as you all can see, I have the drive.

Also, I applied to NYU because it was NYU, which was a bad decision, but I couldn’t afford to visit it first, so I liked the basic program and that was what I was going off of. I could see myself going there if I was in Adler, but alas, I’m not, and I’ll have to make do. Also, I DID talk to Atlantic students when I talked to Chris Anderson and also when I visited the Atlantic Studio

Thanks!

Sounds like you are making headway!! Yay!

I didn’t feel my kid had to be in NYC for college as an acting student. I think this is a very secondary consideration when picking a program. While my kid did end up going to NYU/Tisch and I must admit, now that she did, she has quite a network already in the city…a head start, if you will. But TONS of BFA students study elsewhere and do just fine in their careers. You do not need to be in NYC or at NYU in order to make it. There are some added benefits to being in NYC, but these are not “musts” in my opinion. They are more like “bonus points.” The most important factor is that the program suits you well. The rest will follow.

Araby, I think that in this process you have demonstrated your determination and strong sense of self that will serve you well! You are to be commended for sticking to what you think is best for you and not what other people expect you to do!
