Anti-Gay-Marriage Leader Resigns

A posting on the Daily Kos from a gay man: “Gay bashing hurts, I refuse to be a political football.” Excerpts:

<I feel terribly sorry for both. And I am totally opposed to their political agendas. And I can’t imagine how messed up they must be. Hypocrisy and closet life is not something I’d wish on even my worst enemies, including right wingers who use fear and hatred of gays and lesbians for partisan gain.

That partisan fights over the rights of a minority are even tolerated in the United States is horrific. It is nasty politics that create divisions and dehumanize people. The very fights are instances of injustice and violations of human dignity. How the media and the political talking heads treat the privacy of political leaders - be they hypocrites or not - in the context of gays and lesbians is risky politics that can lead to the creation of second class citizens.>

I sincerely doubt that any poster here can understand this man’s sentiments, indeed many will find ways to twist his words into an indictment of Republicans–the exact thing the man is warning against. This man, unlike most here, in addition to having a brain, has a heart. I wish he and his partner the best–he certainly deserves it.

Frankly, I think he should be able to have massages with whomever he wants.

However, he has committed what looks like a felony (have to check the state statutes) in the purchase and possession of methamphetamine. Since he didn’t use it, where might it now be?

Again, I wish him well in his gay lifestyle, and hope he doesn’t lose too many friends in the National Association of Evangelicals over it.

^^ha. What I said.

Glad you agree. Now if only he could get married…even in his own church.

There is nowhere to go but nasty, is there?

But do you REALLY think politicians have a right to privacy? If so, what was that $50M, of our taxpayers’ money, spent to chase a blue dress?

“There is nowhere to go but nasty, is there?”

If you wish to protect drug felons’ right to privacy, that’s your own affair.

As to his sexual orientation, I don’t give a rat’s patooey. The issue is that the specific constituency he is PAID to represent does, and that he speaks to the White House regularly on their behalf is a big deal.

Let me get on with his gay life, and I hope he can celebrate a more perfect union soon.

Anybody remember Jeff Gannon/Guckert? Male porn star, sole proprietor militarystud.com, phony journalist planted in White House Press Corps? Obviously, there’s a pattern here.

Haggard is just another family values guy come home to the White House to roost. Nice bunch.

What I don’t understand - where do all these people come from? Are there really this many creepy people in the world? I mean, maybe I live a sheltered life. But my friends don’t pay gay prostitutes, or use drugs, or have phone sex, or put the moves on 16 year olds, or beat up their mistresses…Nobody’s got the time for any of that stuff even if they were so inclined! These out of touch blowhards in D.C. We should send them all packing.

so hh, you want to give haggerd and foley the rights that those two would have denied so many others?

do you not see hypocracy here?

and those that wish to deny freedoms to others, well, that attitude is coming back to bite them, ain’t it

if haggerd hadn’t taken himself into the public arena to do so much anti gay rhetoric, using his pulpit to bash gays, maybe he wouldn’t be in this postion

do you remember tammy faye baker and her idiot husband…he preached love, and honesty, and marriage and he was cheating all the way around

it is not gay bashing, and you well know it, it is being a hypocrit

when one goes to the world and basd mouths a whole group of people and uses the holy book to do that, and it turns out they are themselves one of the people they bash, one has to wonder why a person would do that?

do what they consider moral values not coount for themselves? the very people that don’t want gays to have protections, civil rights, etc, and who go about doing all they can to stir up hatred for gays, well when they turn out to be gay, it causes a bit of anger…

and HH, Haggerd and Foley and so many others have used gay politics to further their own ambitions, even Bush most recently talked about the evils of gay marriage!!! HE talked about it…wowwee, do you think Bush should be talking about gays?

OK, what gets me is the impunity with which this guy lies on camera, with a smile on his face. [ See video labeled “Watch what Haggard said about the drugs he bought” at http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/03/haggard.allegations/index.html</a> ]

Obviously no one buys $100 worth of meth unless they are a user… especially since the guy’s voice is recorded on a message specifically asking for “more” –

And a “massage”? Who does he think he’s kidding?

Haggard on tape: "“Hey, I was just calling to see if we could get any more. Either $100 or $200 supply.”

So, he bought it because he was curious, then he decided not to use it and threw it away? Really? Then why is he buying “more”? So he could decide not to use it again?

He is either 1) lying; 2) not very decisive; or 3) singlehandedly trying to stop the drug trade by buying the supply up and throwing it away. [edit: just saw I cross posted with calmom. Sorry.]

And for posters to say he is a private person just plain defies common sense. Anyone who frequently goes on TV as a representative of the evangelicals, who is a member of a weekly advisory council to Rove, and is president of a large relilgious organization cannot come close to claiming he is not a public figure.

As a believing Christian, I am just sick of all this. God is God - he is not a pawn to be used as a campaign slogan, or a way to extort money from trusting parishioners in the pews or on the radio.

James Dobson says, " “The situation has grave implications for the cause of Christ.”

He outta know.

Stay the course.

Wow, Dobson has a really inflated idea of the importance of neo-con evangelists. The cause of Christ managed to endure for about 2000 years before he and his ilk came along, and I imagine it will manage to stumble along even if all of them lose their base.

The idea that the disgrace of one evangelist somehow puts of all Christianity in peril, puts way too much emphasis on man and not near enough on God. Christianity managed to survive the death of Paul, all of the apostles, the saints, etc. I don’t think one pastor getting exposed as a druggie is going to have that much effect on Christ’s teachings or following. I doubt the Christians in Estonia give two hoots if one of Dobson’s cronies is a druggie.

True, but brother Dobson would not be able to extract money for the cause.

It has “grave implications for the cause of getting more donations”.

Or not. The level of blind stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

We had a scandal with a mega church here in Georgia about 20 years ago - the paster and his male members of his extended family (all very high up in the church) caught with their pants down, bedding multiple church members along the way - do you know that people STILL attend that farce of a church and STILL line that man’s (and his family’s) pockets?

Dumb, dumb, dumb - and as long as there are ignorant people with cash to squander, there will be hipocrital preachers to take it from them.

I actually attended that church as a young teen and when they had their “silver and gold” Sunday inwhich these theives encouraged church members to give up their family silver sets and gold wedding bands I knew it was absolutely full of BS…but people by the hundreds went along and did it anyway. Never again.

So sorry–I do believe in post #64 I meant to say: “I wish him and his partner the best–he certainly deserves it.”
