i’ve been worried about not being able to visit colleges i might get accepted to (so far i have only seen two through paid programs) so i’m so glad i get to see rice!

i will be attending the rice vision program…are you guys coming alone or is one of your parents coming with you?

yeah, the site was down earlier…but it’s up now

I’m trying to get my parents to come along so they can see the campus (they’d stay out of my way though, haha) but it’s pretty expensive from here in the NE. About 400 bucks round trip per person.
How about you GodBlessAmerica?

I’m kind of worried because I’ve been telling people that this means I have a strong chance of being admitted but is it more/less likely than this? Should I just tell people “I got a likely letter to Rice. I’m in”? (All questions of modesty aside, that is…:)) I’m worried about possible future embarrassment. My counselor is completely ignorant about the topic.
I’m so excited!

I wouldn’t take it as a gaurenteed admission, but the way I see it…if a school is willing to pay for you to come visit AFTER they have started reviewing your application then you must be a very strong candidate.

And my parents aren’t coming with me. Tickets are expensive, and I don’t really see a need for them to come since it is a structured program. I have already been on several programs such as this and they have never come with me.

Look at this quote from the below link. That gives me hope but I’ll stay humble about it–>I agree that nothing can be guaranteed especially since I haven’t received midyear grades yet, haha.
I need my parents to come so that if I get in, they’ll be more likely to let me go to Texas if they’ve actually seen the school.

[What are “Likely Letters” Like? - Ask The Dean](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/what-are-likely-letters-like.htm)

Hmmm, I got my letter today
I’ll have to do some convincing at my school
I would love to go, but if I cant make it I hope it wont be taken as a lack of interest!
What elasticities did you guys identify with on the common app?
My parents are from Spain and Cuba, so I put those two.

what do you mean by elasticities?

Are internationals eligible?

amdn means what parts did you find to be vague or elastic on the common app. Don’t worry about it, plenty of the answers are sort of “the best of your knowledge” type answers.

officially registered!

it is amazing how interested they are in a personalities just in order to schedule an overnight visit :]

i’m loving Rice already &i haven’t even been there yet!

lol
I feel like a dumb a
ethnicities not elasticities…
I’ve been cramming for SATII Physics so my brain is kind of mush right now
Or maybe the spell check screwed up

I’m actually not really sure what to put for the personality stuff.
What kind of person would they expect to put down Social or Reserved?

I was just completely honest with the personality stuff.

I’ve been paired with hosts before &have had awful times with them because we were just so different and it was hard to actually get a feel for the school.

Take advantage of the fact that they want to pair you with someone you’re compatible with!

It’s not totally like the WashU thing- that school flew me out for free, and I’m completely western European.

On the topic of Asians- they are the exact opposite of URM’s-they are ORM’s; Over Represented Minorities. URMs are groups the representation of which is less than the composition of America they make up. For example: blacks make up 14% of America, but only 8% of Rice, thus they are under-represented. Asians make up 4% of America, but 21% of Rice, so they’re overrepresented.

Question- are there any indications for us Anglos that they’re inclined to accept us? What if they send you a lot of stuff talking about attending and “Financing Your Education at Rice?”

isn’t ORM over represented majorities?

No i don’t think so, that would be sort of repetitive. A majority is obviously over represented. On CC anyway, ORM usually means over represented minority b/c URM means under represented minority.

The only majority is whites, anyway.

looks like I’m gonna get to go after all :]

fought the system, got some flexibility with my absences.

how much will mid-year grades affect an admission decision? does rice take them into serious consideration?

If you are an RD student it’s a serious consideration. It shows your latest status in academics. I don’t see it this clearly on Rice’s website, but other elite institutions consider them in this way. For example, Johns Hopkins. Try not to get senioritis :)
