ANYONE GOIN TO NUS?? IS THERE ANY "COLLEGE LIFE" OUT THERE???

I jus got into NUS an im really tossing between UK unis like Imperial and bristol… NUS is rated considerably better than most brisitsh unis besides imperial…but what im very very worried about is the life in sg…
i mean its the kinda place where they lock you up for littering so…
is there any form of entertainment/ social life for ppl who go to NUS…

if theres anyone hu has ne idea abt life at NUS…PLEASE reply…

thanx

relax… singapore is at best a ‘fine city’. we don’t go around locking people for littering - well if u’re caught, u’re at most fined or be disgraced to do corrective work order (which is bad enuff i think).

it really depends on what kind of social life u’re looking at i guess. there’s probably not much drinking/sex parties/god-noes-what-activities on campus like in the US or UK, but there’s definitely alot of extracurricular activities to choose from and u can always hang out with a group of like-minded friends to do whatever u want. after all, it’s such a huge university u can definitely find ur niche of friends. and staying in the hostels (they call it halls) definitely help.

woah… heyy SJ3, your example’s wayyyy extreme, chill mann! :)

I’m from NUS, and I can say that it isn’t so “lifeless” as many people perceive. If you’re really into the clubbing scene, you might want to take note that various faculties (Business, Arts, Science etc) have regular parties held at Zouk, DXO, Club Momo and the likes. I’m not into clubbing, but I know of them 'cos of heavy publicity done (online notices for students, corridors lined with posters etc). I have heard some seniors “chiong-ing” (partying) 5 consecutive nights, and while some would be too shagged to attend lectures thereafter, others can (I presume) survive the semester with a good mix of hard partying & smart studying. It’s all about the individual I guess.

You can check out the EVENTS page at made-in-Singapore website FunkyGrad (http://www.funkygrad.com) for publicised events of NUS, NTU & SMU. The forum might be helpful too.

If you decide that life’s more than clubbing, you can always stay in the halls during the semester and make it a fulfiling one with hall events and activities. If you decide on the ‘regular halls’ (Eusoff, Temasek, Kent Ridge), it’ll probably be “busy like hell” according to my friends, but you really make fast friends and strong bonds with your hall mates. If you don’t like the idea of hall activities, you can always stay at Prince Georges Park (PGP) where most international students live in during their stay here; many Singaporeans stay in PGP too. Like woebegone mentioned, there are various interest groups for you to choose from too: http://www.nus.edu.sg/osa/activities/svcs/societies.html</a> There is simply no lack of social scene in the campus!

University rankings really do not say much-- what areas they base their ranking on might not be the same as what your criteria of a “good university” is-- i.e. it is very subjective.

‘Environmentally’, NUS has good facilities (libraries in each faculty, computers all around, air-conditioned lectures and tutorial rooms, free wireless internet everywhere on campus etcetc). I am in Arts, and so far, I love NUS mostly because of the professors who are witty yet knowledgeble as they deliver their lectures. Most are very approchable and do not hesitate to inform us to drop by their offices if we’re in doubt of anything. You can really see that they enjoy teaching, and put their responsibilities in teaching as their first priority (because I have read that in some top-ranking universities, the profs are all busy with their research & couldn’t care less of the students). If these are your concerns (good environment & good lecturers), you can be assured that NUS is all that, and more.

That being said, if you are a Singaporean (I presume you are, SJ3?), you might like a change of environment and experince a whole new culture as you live an independent lifestyle overseas.

You just gotta keep in mind that life is what yoU want it to be, and for you to make the best out of it ^_^

singapore is more of a liberal minded technical city which is freely enjoyable… NUS or for that matter any univ here wont giv u the traditional sought of so called campus and college student life for sure but this would be a different kinda experiance too. well a little ( or i shud say much more) disciplined way of life than US or Uk… and partty is at a little minimum level… as of a city its a gr8 city in terms of what ull get frm other places…

In all, a bet worth placing, the place is i wud say prolly must -go if ur focus is academics and job p[lacements after ur studies… but otherwise Imperial is gud…

also rememeber rankiings are at most i say useless to estimate the perfect match for a parrtculat students unique needs … so well assess ur situation and compre urself at both places. They are both uniquely different so a generalization based upon common characteristics cud be worse…

SM

eunique, i dun think sJ3 is singaporean… i mean if he/she is, he/she won’t be enquiring about life in singapore and certainly not describe it as a place which locks up people for littering… dat sounds like a mistaken impression most foreigners have abt singapore…

well sJ3,in all probabilities i’ll be going to NUS,dont worry about life there if im there  :)

hey…thanx for the posts…

btw eunique, im not singaporean…woebegone…ur rite there
hehe…wasup…look forward to runnin into u at NUS…

oh an one other thing…
is there an existant sex life at NUS??

dus neone exactly how long eactly the b.eng course for electrical eng is??

and in singapore is there any chance that students may have motorbikes??
is in is it legal and is it expensive to maintain an purchase etc…

4 years…i dunno about the bike…looking to meet ya too…where are u frm btw…india here

there is both partying and non-party type activites in Singapore… esp once you are part of a university since you’ll recieve a lot of news about such events… (so i’ve heard from my friends there)

and the littering comment. lol its just funny what a reputation singapore has beyond our shores.

wasup: i must say… sometimes i think the south indian food in singapore is better than many places in india… (if thats a plus) so if you like yer vadas and sambar… you might like the indian food in singapore more than in places like delhi… where… i find the south indian food to be below par most of the time. but yeah… north indian in singapore will just be expensive and not really your money’s worth in my opinion… but thats after i have tasted the wonder of indian restaurants in jakarta so i might be heavily biased here.

i dont even know why i am telling you so muchabout indian food… maybe cause i love it so much. and because i like telling people about it ^^

sj3, from what i hear from my NUS peers, yes there is a good sex life. not all participate in sexual activities, but just like any other college, im sure you will find that a number of students do.

as for motorbikes, singapore is notorious for its skyhigh automobile prices. i would urge you to reconsider as singapore does have a very comprehensive public transport network… trust me, ive been living with it for the past 17 years.

as for your original post, if ure involved with your hall activities, im sure you will have many hall-centric ECs. there shd be a fair share of other ECs… as for other activities, we like to have fun! many singaporeans start clubbing and partying at highschool level and the nightscene here is not-that-bad (of course, not comparable to UK’s).

if uve any other qns regarding spore, do feel free to ask me.

hey thanks dejamoo…but uve in a way confirmed my worst fears!
i dont like south indian food at all…typical north indian here…

hi scandal-less

how hectic is it in NUS?hours a week?etc etc

wasup…im indian too…but ive bin living in srilanka for the last 14 yrs…
loads of indians applying to nus yea??

scandal-less…any idea what the population percents are like??
as in singaporean, international, etc…

and also, say when youve got a singaporean student visa, are you allowed to enter adjoinin countries like malaysia without additional visas…?? as in like for holidays an stuff??

hey eunique, thanx for the funkygrad link…

hi sJ3…
cool…colombo?got lots of friends there…

anyhoo do u hv any idea how hectic it is there??

wasup… yea colombo…

i think its pretty solid hard work at NUS…
neone with specific info on wrk hrs etc…pls post

well a guy i kno there told me its 20 hours a week, but that isnt too hectic is it??

maybe the give lots of assignments or sumthin…

perhaps this website will give u guys some insight into our varsity lives…

http://www.funkygrad.com/</a></p>

looks happening enuff for me, but it seems like foreigners don’t really partake in all these social events… yeah in fact there’s an article somewhere in the website that complains of the number of foreigners on campus in NUS and NTU… coz they do nothing but study all day long and hence take up all the grades (especially dominating in engineering, science and econs faculties) whereas the locals have to balance school work with extracurricular activities - not just in the name of fun but also to chalk up enough points to keep their place in the halls…

ty for the link woebegone but do u kno exactly how many hours of lectures do students hv to attend ?

hey woebegone…

r u a student at nus rite now?? or r u planin to go there??

as for ur comment abt foriegners "they do nothing but study all day long and hence take up all the grades " wow man… here im thinkin how am i gonna get along there when all the singaporeans are gonna be workin thir asses off and im kinda against the all-work thing…

newaays…thats a new prespective…

and if u r at nus then u shud kno like how many lectures per week and hrs…

wasup, is the 20 hrs for engneerin? or sumtin else…wat are u going in for anyways??
