woah… heyy SJ3, your example’s wayyyy extreme, chill mann! :)

I’m from NUS, and I can say that it isn’t so “lifeless” as many people perceive. If you’re really into the clubbing scene, you might want to take note that various faculties (Business, Arts, Science etc) have regular parties held at Zouk, DXO, Club Momo and the likes. I’m not into clubbing, but I know of them 'cos of heavy publicity done (online notices for students, corridors lined with posters etc). I have heard some seniors “chiong-ing” (partying) 5 consecutive nights, and while some would be too shagged to attend lectures thereafter, others can (I presume) survive the semester with a good mix of hard partying & smart studying. It’s all about the individual I guess.

You can check out the EVENTS page at made-in-Singapore website FunkyGrad (http://www.funkygrad.com) for publicised events of NUS, NTU & SMU. The forum might be helpful too.

If you decide that life’s more than clubbing, you can always stay in the halls during the semester and make it a fulfiling one with hall events and activities. If you decide on the ‘regular halls’ (Eusoff, Temasek, Kent Ridge), it’ll probably be “busy like hell” according to my friends, but you really make fast friends and strong bonds with your hall mates. If you don’t like the idea of hall activities, you can always stay at Prince Georges Park (PGP) where most international students live in during their stay here; many Singaporeans stay in PGP too. Like woebegone mentioned, there are various interest groups for you to choose from too: http://www.nus.edu.sg/osa/activities/svcs/societies.html There is simply no lack of social scene in the campus!

University rankings really do not say much-- what areas they base their ranking on might not be the same as what your criteria of a “good university” is-- i.e. it is very subjective.

‘Environmentally’, NUS has good facilities (libraries in each faculty, computers all around, air-conditioned lectures and tutorial rooms, free wireless internet everywhere on campus etcetc). I am in Arts, and so far, I love NUS mostly because of the professors who are witty yet knowledgeble as they deliver their lectures. Most are very approchable and do not hesitate to inform us to drop by their offices if we’re in doubt of anything. You can really see that they enjoy teaching, and put their responsibilities in teaching as their first priority (because I have read that in some top-ranking universities, the profs are all busy with their research & couldn’t care less of the students). If these are your concerns (good environment & good lecturers), you can be assured that NUS is all that, and more.

That being said, if you are a Singaporean (I presume you are, SJ3?), you might like a change of environment and experince a whole new culture as you live an independent lifestyle overseas.

You just gotta keep in mind that life is what yoU want it to be, and for you to make the best out of it ^_^
