ANYONE GOIN TO NUS?? IS THERE ANY "COLLEGE LIFE" OUT THERE???

yeah infact a guy named cres on this forum told me so…he’s 2nd year engineering.

SJ3: lol… I presumed wrongly, I thought you were a local! woebegone’s more observant… heh ;)

and hey SJ3, no probm! Funkygrad’s sure gives quite an insight to some of our local unis here^_^ as for the motorcycles, there are students who ride them (though most still travel by bus/MRT) to school, some even have cars. but like what scandal-less mentioned, public transport is comprehensible and sufficient to bring you to any part of the city! :D

About crossing the borders to Malaysia for day trips, I’m not sure whether you need a visa to go over, but even for Singaporeans, we’re suppose to produce our passports at the checkpoint before we can pass through… the same goes for Malaysians who come into Singapore.

wasup & SJ3: Speaking from the perspective of an Arts student-- we take an average of 5 modules per semester, and on the average, each mod has 2hrs of lecture weekly (though they’ll end 15mins early to give us enough time to get to the next class), 1hr of tutorial weekly OR 2hrs of tutorial fortnightly, 3-5 hrs for projects/assignments, and another 3-5hrs for preparatory work before lessons-- all dependent on the level, type of module, and the faculty you’re at.

For example, most Sci mods and some Engine. mods will have a ‘laboratory’ component, and less of the ‘preparatory work’ component. But many Sci mods have like two 2hr lects per week. Just comparing Sci & Arts students, the former has a much packed timetable than the latter, though the latter has much more readings to do outside of curriculum time.

For a look at some of the modules, you guys can check out this page: https://aces01.nus.edu.sg/cors/jsp/report/ModuleInfoListing.jsp</a> (it gives a list of mods available for this current semester of ours; mods vary from one sem to another)

So if you select “Engineering” faculty and choose the “Electrical & Computer Engineering” Department, you see a list of mods available for the sem, the timetable and even the exam date & time. Let’s say you click on EE2004: Electronic Devices, it’ll give you more details about the course. There’s one heading “Modular Workload (A-B-C-D-E)”, and it lists that this mod has “3-1-0.5-2-3.5” where

A: no. of lecture hours per week (eg. 3hrs)
B: no. of tutorial hours per week (eg. 1hr)
C: no. of laboratory hours per week (eg. half an hr)
D: no. of hours for projects, assignments, fieldwork etc per week (eg. 2hrs)
E: no. of hours for preparatory work by a student per week (eg. 3 and a half hr)

I think next year’s modules are not out yet, but you can look around the page, and maybe even the CORS webpage http://www.cors.nus.edu.sg/</a> where all students have to login to use allocated points to register and “bid” for their modules. But this is done after you’ve matriculated and everything, and they’ll announce the time when bidding starts, so no worries.

Hope it helps! :)

thats some gud lot of information … ^^^^ … nice… interesting… seems like NUS … does have as always a tigher and much more strict schdeule and routine for engineering majors…

SM

hi eunique ,thanks a ton for this…cud u explain the bidding thingy again pls…thanks

o and btw ive got common engineering,so is that the same as DEAN’S OFFICE(ENGINEERING)…

well sJ3 frm wat i see its bloody hectic…hell we’ll still chill ;)

wasup… hell yea… scru u guys if u wanna cramp up on book all day long… nus r not…college shud still b collge… time for fun…hehe

nope i’m not a student at NUS… probably not going there either (but i am not sure) so i am not sure about the lecture hours but i’m sure eunique has provided very useful information over there. i’ll probably be going US, but if i were to go NUS, i’ll be doing Applied Math or Stats in the science fac…

i applied to nus with pending AL results yea…so thats based on sats…
i got my decision oline but not the letter yet so im wonderin if their decision is conditional or not??
as will i have to continue working for good AL finals??

oh i am not sure how it works for internationals, but i guess it’s possible for them to rescind your offer if u do drastically badly in your AL. i think the letter should come soon (even then the offer can be conditional?). i mean, snail mail always come later right.

if it’s much comfort to all, the total number of hours per week for everything (A+B+C+D+E), is always 10hours for all NUS students, regardless of which faculty you’re in ^_^

wasup, it’s difficult for me to explain without visual aids, but you can read up on them on the CORS website. Look at “Student Guides” and the “Step-by-step Guides”, there’s a power point, HTML guide and even a video clip on the latter page. But really, the bidding’s the last thing you should concern yourself with; it happens after you’ve all got a place & have matriculated, and by that time they’ll have talks telling all new students how to use the system to bid for their modules:)

gotcha…10 hours per module that is right?..6 mods per semester for engineering…with classes of each module every week…so does that translate into im dreading saying it um 60 hours??

or will u relieve me by saying that i hv completely misunderstood…i sure hope so

lol… well, “technically”, you’ve got that right; but while A, B and C are in a sense, ‘fixed’ (it’ll be as such on your timetable… unless you decide to skip a lecture or two on “crazybusy deadline weeks” since most lects don’t take attendance-- remember, you didn’t hear it from me… loLz~ ), D and E will depend on how much time the individual take to do self-studying and reading of notes etc… seriously, most of us here don’t really pay attention to the D and E parts, cos it’s really up to the individual :D

well iv nearly had heart failure…but ur last 2 lines hv got me on life support…holy ****

well iv got to distract meself

join the group

hahaha wasup u reallly seem to have got the CC additiction that we all got long back.Though we have learnt to make it secondary in terms of our internet work … it still is the most reg acitivity on board…

SM

what the hell…no way man…if theres 15 hrs to an avg working day (besides sleeping), then theres 105 hrs to a week… and 60 hrs is like 57 % of that…cant b that bad…

well it better not be…lol…

Naff is quoted “Indeed, NUS programs might have stronger academics. So what? I’d wished to work in the United States someday. Can NUS bring me closer to that? No. The NUS degree is limited to only Singapore and neighbouring countries. Only a few lucky and extremly capable people will be able to even get an opportunity. On the other hand, most of the NUS grads, sadly, will be stuck in Singapore”

WHAT THE HELL??? IS THIS TRUE??? i thought NUS had a solid world wide recognition

i replied to that in the other thread. and apparently, i didn’t quite agree naff’s take on that.
