The main challenge we’ll face is actually setting up a life there, being Pakistanis that might be quite a daunting task since we are heavily reliant on our parents. But then again it could be a very valuable learning opportunity.

I don’t know, man. I am on the verge of passing on Georgetown.

From what I have gathered after sifting through the job listings online, Arabic seems to be a “desirable” requirement almost everywhere. That’s a major issue. Plus, I think it remains uncertain whether or not enough spaces will remain vacant for internationals, given that more and more Qataris are joining the workforce.

The online financial aid calculator state sthat $45K kay loans hoon gain, which is TOO much given that interest rates are also applicable.

I suggest dont ditch Georgetown just yet, take the vacations to hash it out with family and friends. Thats what I am going to do. If it were not CMU I would have ditched qatar a long time ago but since I got rejected from the ivies and didnt get scholarships at hkust this is the best deal I have as yet.

The QF loan is interest free. As I said I am still pretty much unsure, I will pay the deposit if I get the loan but I will give it alot more thought before arriving at a final decision. NUS replies have started, they’ll keep coming untill late june.

You could try doing isktakhara. Seeking divine help will help put your mind at ease. Also try contacting the admission counselor and get in touch with some students there. They might offer some helpful perspective.

I have had the opportunity to talk to some freshman students. All of them said that they, too, are worried about the prospect of paying their loans, but they don’t think they’d remain jobless.

I have sent the admissions department an email, asking for advice on this issue from one of their career services officer.

anyway, I think it’ll be best to err on the side of caution and do my undergrad from LUMS because I do not want to repay my undergrad debt.

@SAT456, I’m still contemplating upon my offers. Most of the offers are from okay-ish LAC’s and the aid their giving is also okay-ish. The thing is, I got wait-listed by a few good LAC’s so I’m kind of waiting for them to release their decisions and then I’ll make the final decision.

thank you everybody! means so much to hear such kind words from you all! :D

got $60,000 from Columbia. Penn is offering $40,000 so that’s totally off the cards :(

So now its NYUAD vs Columbia. For a business/eco major. I have done a fair bit of research. NYU tops Columbia in terms of business. That’s a given. But, as much as people at NYUAD insist otherwise, NYUAD isn’t obviously as fantastic at NYU NY. I don’t want to be the person who went to an Ivy League just because its an Ivy. I want to see for myself that Columbia tops NYUAD in terms of my major and then commit myself to it. Advice guys? I have pretty much pulled out all my hair :P

@duresham3 - Did you get into Wharton at UPenn? If yes, that should be your top choice for a business major. But then again, you have issues with its financial aid package. In that case, I’ll highly recommend Columbia over NYUAD, any day! You don’t need to be modest into saying that you don’t want to go to an Ivy just because it is an Ivy, lol. Columbia will give you a better university experience than the newbie, NYUAD.
Good luck!

I read your posts. Now i’m starting to feel worried abt CMU Qatar (CS) too. lol. still waiting for their aid decision.

I’m applying for financial aid at NUS too. and they announce their scholarship decision next month. But ppl rarely get that and they get you to sign a 6 year bond! I think the QF loans (interest free) are flexible enough. you can work anywhere and pay them 15% or work in an approved country and get your loans waived (at 30000$ per year). I think NUS might give some aid in the form of grants but the loans they give will definitely be WITH interest!

And one former classmate’s in CMU qatar doing Business. He says getting a good job in Qatar shouldn’t be a problem with a cmu degree, hopefully. I’m sort of leaning towards CMU qatar (against NUS). The thing abt arabic requirement; I don’t think that some of the better firms/companies will really want efficiency in arabic. Lots of expatriates in qatar.

what do you guys think?

@junaid you paid the deposit in cmuq? didn’t apply for aid??

I have been accepted to Georgetown, not CMU.

Take a look at the job listings at the firms listed in the Ceparrer Services Pages of universities in Education City. A lot of them require or desire Arabic proficieny.

Secondly, since we have to work at public companies to get the amount of loans waived, I think Arabic would be a requirement over there.

More importantly, I got an email from QF statitng that they don’t ensure job availability and will not assure of recruitment by a public company. This has really got me worried.

I couldn’t find firms under career services. I think Qatar foundation would try to get us jobs at ‘approved’ firms but if we don’t get them we’ll have to give 15% of our earnings.
