I just wanted to let you guys know, everyone applying to schools in Qatar that is, that you need to stop cribbing about your financial aid package. I study at CMU (In Pittsburgh) I am a Chemical Engineering and Math major. From what I’ve seen and know CMU does not give good financial aid packages. And even if you appeal please do not expect to get more aid. My friends in Pittsburgh appeal all year round but still do not get more aid. If you are getting anything more than 10k then that’s excellent. Also I saw someone asking about CS at CMUQ and NUS. CMU has an excellent CS department but if it requires you to stay in Qatar for a few years then don’t go there. If you don’t have to stay there for a few years and you can work outside Qatar then go for CMU CS. But that being said you will get royally screwed in your freshman and sophomore years because the level of discrete math (15-151 and 15-251) and the level of programming (15-112, 15-122, 15-150, 15-210 and 15-213) are very very high. They expect you to work for 8 hours daily outside class. I don’t know how hard these classes are at CMUQ but I definitely expect them to be of the same standard. If you’re going for CS to any CMU institution you will make more than enough money to pay back your loans. That being said I don’t know how much CMUQ grads earn and where they get employed but for CMU students CS grads make tons of money. For any other major (Business, IS) I don’t think its worth going to CMUQ. Business isn’t a great major in any case and if you’re doing it at CMUQ I don’t think its that big of a deal. Go to a local college (LUMS, IBA) instead for your bachelors, save money and go abroad for your masters. Business at CMU is also considered to be a joke major so why waste 250k on it. And IS while it may seem like a great major its just 2 CS (15-112 and 15-121) courses and then a few other stupid H&SS courses you need to take. If you’re doing business or IS you should definitely look into either graduating in 2 or 3 years or doing a double major. I’m only saying this in respect for CMUQ though. At CMU business and IS students get plenty of opportunities and they do very well. I have a friend in Tepper who is doing really well and will probably get an awesome job later on because CMU kids in Tepper are given opportunites every 2 weeks to meet employers and heads of various business companies. And I’ve never really been a fan of the IS major. I think its a waste of time and its for people who want to do CS but can’t get into it. Its more like a dumbed down CS major.
