Ask me anything

hey i had a couple questions about housing and just how i would fit in at asu. would my personality would fit in, and a friend was telling me you could find a room mate early from this site and i could see like everything about them. how would i go about this?

@Wilson2 - did you ever get any insight on your question?

My son was accepted into the College of Letters and Sciences, but he wants to be on the Tempe campus. He doesn’t know what he wants to major in. Does it make sense to declare a major that’s based on the Tempe campus to get there?

Can you apply for more scholarships next year?? I have two going to ASU in aug.

TypeADad-- all the majors at Tempe are also in the other campus. I went there last weekend. Visited Tempe, Downtown Campus and Poly Campus. I didn’t care for the Poly campus. Both downtown and Tempe are beautiful. Both my sons choose the Tempe campus. If that helps!

TypeADad: I’m a little confused about your question. According to ASU’s website the School of Letters and Sciences and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are both on the Tempe campus so your S would be on that campus regardless of major within those schools/colleges. The college on the West Campus is called the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. I don’t believe it is true that all majors at Tempe are also at other campuses, or vice versa, even in these colleges. These colleges may have similar majors but most likely they have some differences.

MOM1006 ASU has a pretty nice scholarship search program (google “ASU scholarship search”) where students can do searches with various criteria. A lot of these are available to returning students beyond the freshman year. The site includes the information on who is eligible, deadlines, and how to apply for each scholarship.

TypeADad - If you use the degree program search on ASU’s website, there is a whole column dedicated to what campus the major is located on.

I’m currently majored in Business Communication at WP Carey, and I could be wrong, but my counselor told me that I have to have 3.0GPA or above in major GPA to graduate.

When I looked at Major Map for Business Communication, it shows

Total Hours: 120
Upper Division Hours: 51 minimum
Major GPA: 2.00 minimum
Cumulative GPA: 2.50 minimum

Does this mean I only have to have 2.00 minimum in Major GPA to graduate?

I believe you only need to get a C in any of your business/major courses in order to graduate. A C is a 2.0 so I would imagine that’s all you need.

Any engineering majors out there?

KevinNguyen134, have you gotten into their engineering program?

Do you know how ASU handles refunds in the case of a medical withdrawal of a student. My D is looking at USC and Loyola vs. ASU - both schools have a clear refund policy and provide tuition insurance to cover the financial loss if my student can’t complete a term. ASU has been less than helpful - 3 transfers, more than an hour on calls - and still no clear answers other than you can go thru an appeals process to get a refund.

Hi i was just wondering if it is possible to do a double major in different campuses like doing one at TEmpe and one at Polytechnic, if anyone can answer this that be awesome

Does anyone know if it is difficult to get into the W.P. Carey school of business via “Portfolio Admission”? I just finished my ABUS-GR with a 3.7 GPA, but I have not taken the ACT. I am in state at a CC that has a pathway agreement with ASU. Is this completely out of the question?

Are there a lot of gay people here? How is the community

Hmmm, ASU is NOT a very gay-friendly community nor is AZ, note read up on SB1062. ASU has a sizable Mormon community and alot of GOP/Republican voters, it is not an inclusive environment, you will find some gay-friendly groups but not alot.

Groan… 8-|

How in the world would one know that a university has a lot of Republican voters??? One-fourth of the students aren’t even Arizona residents. Give me a break!

FWIW, ASU ranked near bottom of most conservative schools coming in at 1129 out of 1394 schools. (Number 1 is most conservative)

http://colleges.niche.com/rankings/diversity/top-most-conservative-schools/?page=46&

Most recent past ASU Student body President, now at the CofC is a GOP operative in state, I know him personally, it gave a number of students discomfort when elected, but elected he was. He was appointed to the Regents by the GOP Governor, he represented the student body to the Regents.

To your point, I think all the ASU students are Arizona residents (ie: they live here), unless they are online, whether the qualify for In-State tuition is another matter. I think you are right about 80% of ASU students are from Arizona

Couple of facts or factoids, You did know there is more than one LDS Church (extremely Conservative!) on the ASU campus, ASU (In-State) is regarded by Arizona students and parents as the heart of the ‘Red State’, it is considered the most Right wing of the 3 Universities, not sure why, but that’s what is the perception and has been as long I have lived here, about 15 years now.
NAU is the lefty/Liberal Uni and UofA is somewhere in between. I know you do not live in Arizona and so may not know this, but those of us living in Arizona Do!, trust me I LIVE here, You don’t! ASU is a ‘Conservative University’

@Celesteroberts…Tired, why the Groan?

Englishman, since you make references to your company job’s hiring practices, I assume your adjunct job at ASU is a part-time position, something you do on the side. As you obviously abhor the place and its people, why do you continue to teach there? Your attitude towards the school is bound to seep into your teaching and make a bad experience for your students. Be good to them and yourself and us. Quit now. As you must be a part-timer, ASU’s decision this fall to limit adjunct hours in advance of implementation of the new healthcare law should not have affected you directly. But perhaps you feel you have been badly treated by them in some other way? Underpaid or teaching low level classes full of not very knowledgeable teenagers which is beneath your dignity or I don’t know what. Anyway, you should take time to assess the situation, evaluate your feelings, and move accordingly to better your quality of life.

In addition to the Mormon churches you mentioned, there is at least one mosque on campus. I saw it walking around the NW part of campus. I would guess there are churches of every kind. Churches everywhere. America is like that. You get used to it eventually, like it or not. There is a very good organization in my hometown, FFRF, which works to limit religious excess in the public sphere, particularly where it is prohibited by law. They would be happy to have your donation.
