Ask questions about Cal Berkeley here!

I am interested in AP policy of L&S. It seems that Berkeley awards 2.7 units for 3, 4, or 5 on AP Statistics. However, the exam score cannot fulfill any requirement. If a student take a course at Berkeley later for which AP credit has been awarded, then he would encounter a duplication of credit. And AP credit may be removed. Does that mean taking the AP Statistics exam is kinda useless?..

@kasablanca
You’re correct. Everyone in L&S starts undeclared, and generally you declare after taking some intro classes. There’s no requirement that you take any classes in the department that you listed on the application.

Economics is an impacted major, which means that to declare it, you have to receive at least a 3.0 average in Math 1A/1B, Stat 20, Econ 1, and Econ 100/101A or 100/101B. In my experience, many econ majors take their first 100-series class in their third semester and declare during that semester.

@deaxuy
I’m not an engineer, but from the experience of my roommates, moving from one engineering major to another within the COE is not that hard - you need to keep up a decent GPA and make sure you meet the prereqs for the new major. Chem E lower-division (intro course) requirements are basically the same as Industrial Engineering or any other engineering major - lots of math and science - with a bit more focus on chemistry. You should find it fairly easy to use your first year of classes for IEOR if you switch.

Moving from COE to L&S (economics) is really easy as long as you have a GPA above 2.0. Though as I said in my response to @kasablanca , econ is an impacted major, so you would need a 3.0 in the corresponding intro classes.

@papyrusreed
I don’t think you can request roommates besides the person you’ll be sharing your room with. This is somewhat different than the mini-suites in the units, which is what I assume you’re talking about, but I lived in the foothill suites my freshman year and I never had the option of choosing my suitemates.

That double major / minor should be doable if you make sure to spread your courseload out. Take a reasonable number of units your first semester (no more than 16, not counting decals), and see how it goes for you. If you think you can handle it, then you should be able to fit everything in with good course planning. I’m doing a double major in CS and Statistics and I’ve found it’s manageable as long as you restrict the number of “hard”/technical classes per semester to a certain number.

@JoeyBing
I’ve never seen any place where the AP Stats course would be useful, no. Most departments with a lower-division statistics requirement (econ, for instance) don’t accept it, and as a statistics major I can assure you that it’s not going to prepare someone for stats upper-divs. Anyway, getting extra credits doesn’t really matter, unless you’re trying to graduate in less than four years. You’ll automatically accrue the number needed to graduate with eight semesters of normal courseload.

My son was accepted as a L&S undeclared. Is it difficult for him to declare physics major . Thanks.

I have a financial aid question. In my portal I have a scholarship called the “UC Freshman Scholarship”. Is this scholarship only for freshman year or can I reapply/renew it for the next four years? It will greatly affect my decision to go there as it is almost a 7k scholarship.

@thej77 chem eng is actually in College of Chem, not engineering… would that change things?

@deaxuy Ah yeah, forgot about that… in that case, I don’t know. If it’s the same as switching into the COE from L&S, which I think it likely would be, then it’s fairly difficult. See http://engineering.berkeley.edu/admissions/undergrad-admissions/change-college for more info on switching into the COE from another college.

@twosonspa The physics major is not impacted, so it only requires a 2.0 in the prerequisite classes (four semesters of physics and three of math, 1-2 of which can be waived with credit from AP Calc AB/BC). If your son is coming in with at least AP Calc AB, it should be easy for him to declare by the end of his third semester.

@Thej77, thank you.
My son got AP calculus BC 5, Physics E&M 5 & Physics Mechanic 5, what classes should be taken?

SF is about 12 miles away, but you have to cross a bay. BART (our subway) is the way to go. Depending on where you want to go in SF, BART is all you need. After that, your Google Maps app will tell you what bus or walking way to get to your destination.

FINANCIAL AID QUESTION KIND OF URGENT: In my portal I have a scholarship called the “UC Freshman Scholarship”. Is this scholarship only for freshman year or can I reapply/renew it for the next four years? It will greatly affect my decision to go there as it is almost a 7k scholarship and the decision day is May 1st as you know.

@mluhn98 since you consider your question to be urgent, I recommend calling the Cal Financial Aid Office directly: Telephone: (510) 664-9181, Monday – Friday 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

What housing option to choose that correlates with all-gender?

I am set on a Foothill suite as my preference, and there are three options for me to choose from as an incoming freshman. There’s double, triple, and quadruple.

Which of these three suite options (double/triple/quad) relates with all-gender? Or which rooming option relates with a bigger suite? Because, as I understand, Foothill suites with 6 or more bedrooms are all-gender.

tl;dr Does a certain number of people per room in foothill correlate with the number of rooms there are in a given suite? Also, does any given suite have a mix of 2-people/3-people/4-people rooms?

Is it possible to have a triple room and a double room in the same suite?

@twosonspa
I would recommend Physics 5A, the first course in the honors physics sequence. It’s replacing the old H7A course. For math, he could take math 53 (multivariate calculus) or physics 89 (linear algebra and differential equations). Beyond that I would recommend Physics 77, an 2-unit introductory programming course with physics applications, and a breadth course or R1A/R1B if he didn’t get out of them with AP Lang/Lit. That adds up to 14 units, a good amount for a first semester.

@Kyuutoryuu
It is correct that suites of about 7-9 are single-gender, and those of 13-18 are all-genders (and have a second common room and two more bathrooms). Doubles and Triples are roughly evenly distributed between single-gender and mixed-gender suites, but quads tend to be in larger (mixed-gender) suites. Quads are rare, though - most rooms are doubles with a few triples here and there. In my time at foothill, the most common types of suites seemed to be:
4 doubles (Most common)
3 doubles and a triple
3 doubles and a single for an RA
And a few large mixed-gender suite

Overall I would recommend a double, life is easier when you only have to deal with one roommate.

So I just got accepted for waitilist and have a few questions.

When is my SIR due by? Tonight still?
Is FPF the regular admission for Berkeley students
And my financial aid report is not out yet, any idea why?

Hi! I was wondering if it was possible/easy to be in GETH and therefore have to take the 2-unit seminar that goes with it and 4 classes this fall. I’m from the east coast so I don’t know very much about the UC system. Thanks.

Hi I just received an email that there was a slight change to my Conditions of Admission. Did anyone else receive this email? If so, could you post your new Conditions of Admission states?

FPF is for “Spring” admits. That is, you attend the FPF program in the fall and attend regular Cal classes Spring semester. This is due to the number of available slots that open up from those graduating from Cal in December. You are not enrolled in regular Cal classes at first but you still get to live in the dorms, get fin aid, etc. My D had 2 dorm floormates attend FPF. It’s really not a big deal, you just pick from the FPF classes instead of the general catalog and attend class at their satellite campus for one semester.

nmcava: D is in GETH right now. You have to apply to it, get in, then put it on your housing app. I’m not sure when the deadline is, but may have already passed. I would contact the GETH rep though. There was some movement last fall cycle and 2 or 3 people (out of about 22) got in off the waitlist. There are about 22 slots for about 60-70 applicants. There are great perks in a theme house and D had/is having a great time there. The seminar is 1 unit and by discussion/social based. The time commitment is minimal for that and the GETH projects. They have university paid trips, funds, and a ESPM faculty advisor/mentor as well. Good luck!

Hey everyone,
I was planning on taking Math 1B first semester, first year at Berkeley. However, the plan of study for the Computer Science BA major recommends that I take Math 1B junior year. When is the best time to take Math 1B?

Does anyone know anything about UC Berkeley San Francisco campus? Like do we get to become a Berkeley student after the first semester? Are all the classes still available? Are there any disadvantages?
