Big 10 for Business

Agreed! Lots of growing and learning to do for all these kiddos. I don’t think my son is an IB guy either. I just want him to keep doors open while he figures it all out. in my mind majoring in economics or a social science certainly doesn’t close any doors in any business field.

awesome share - very helpful string and sharing with my son!!!

#5 Michigan
#14 Indiana
#15 UIUC
#24 Minnesota
#27 Wisconsin
#55 Mich St

I think Ohio State doesn’t participate with data - not on the ranking.

And Tennessee had big jump from #49 to #35

Can’t see the entire list but clearly they miss most colleges as they note this. And a learning for me - there are at least two Gabelli schools - I’ll “research but assume with the same namesake.

“Ninety-one schools participated in 2024’s ranking, including two schools that have not been previously ranked: Loyola Marymount University which debuted at No. 39 and Roger Williams University’s Mario J. Gabelli School of Business which debuted at No. 79.”

I love that they post the data behind the rankings! I find the info really interesting!

Here’s the entire list:

This says that UMich is #4
OSU is #17
Purdue #21

Different list vs Poets & Quants - but another good data point

Do you have the full list that covers all the Big 10 schools?

Awesome. Thx. I’ve always been curious but only have seen locked lists. So this is great akd appreciated !!

Looks like B10 is 9 of top 28 (big tie at 21) so I took further to 28……if I counted right. 11 overall and will go up with inclusion of Pac 10 schools.

Missing (I think) are many perceived strong schools - Denver, Miami Florida, Elon - unless I missed them.

Interesting schools often talked about as strong here - and it’s tough because there are so many disciplines and some are strong in some but not all - like Miami Ohio, Fordham, SMU, TCU, Santa Clara are lower down the list (but at least on the list).

I guess it’s another ranking - I get it - the top are the top. But I wouldn’t want it to diminish the choices some students make and I know there are successful grads from all the schools and especially ones I listed. But I suppose if they have 91 schools - there has to be a 1-91.

While all the data are interesting, to me, this is one of the most important categories:

  • Was your first job after graduating in your desired industry?
  • Was your first job after graduating at your desired company?

If I had to guess what school would come out on top based on these two questions, my guess would not have been TCU! But I suspect that’s part of why Neely has gotten so incredibly hot and recent years! Good for TCU!

Here’s the full P&Q list for this year. You don’t have to pay to access. Just give them your email.

Interestingly, in the US News & World Report rankings UIUC / Ohio St / Wis are all tied at #17

This is the USNWR list as mentioned above, not Poets and Quants. The complete ranking for all B1G schools is as follows:

University of Michigan #4
Indiana University #8
University of Illinois #17
University of Wisconsin #17
The Ohio State University #17
University of Maryland #21
Michigan State University #21
University of Minnesota #21
Purdue University #21
Pennsylvania State University #21
University of Iowa #36
University of Nebraska #62
Rutgers University NB #70

I don’t know all the data US news uses to create its rankings. It does seem like schools don’t move around very much on the US news rankings. Whereas a school could have a couple of big years and move up the charts pretty fast at P&Q.

You missed the 2024 US News redo. - lots of movement - upward by publics, downward by privates - but that’s the entire school - not sure about sub majors.

US News is based solely on peer surveys from other business school Deans kind of like a college football coach poll I have heard its ranked out of a 5 point system. The standard deviation among schools can be really small and a lot of people just fill out the same ranking year after year because realistically how much does any one business school Dean know about another 100 schools? The general US news methodology is much different than their specialty schools.

Also, none of the LACs have business as a major so Econ is the only “business” choice. They also have well-connected networks which are a pipeline to high finance.

P&Q only rank the schools who respond to their inquiry. This year it was 91 schools who responded. They also adjust inputs more often than USNWR. It’s not really an all encompassing list, but most of the top schools are listed.
