Binge watched tv shows (Part 1)

I highly recommend the book

Finished Death and other details (Hulu/Disney+)
It’s a well-done whodunnit with 2 mysteries (who killed Imogen’s mother 18 years ago? Who is Viktor Sam and what does he want/why is he killing people on our luxury cruise?), an enclosed space (a 1950s style renovated cruise ship) and a locked room mystery. I think it’d have been better if it’d been 8 episodes and not 10 (one part of the plot seems to have been modified or added to stretch the story - a bit as if you decide a character wil get in trouble for being an undocumented Mexican in Texas and you change that for Californian in Texas and forget that you can cross from state to state…) and pet peeve they pretend Malta is Italian when in fact it was British and people speak Maltese&English (big business for EU students who like learning in the sun&by the beach). But we see nice views of Malta. Very pretty trip across the island and more generally the Mediterranean. The plot keeps you guessing and the 1st ending makes sense while the 2nd clearly announces a possible 2nd season.
Warning, there’s a lot of gratuitous sex. (Everything is shot from the chest up.) Sex as motivation, shame or blackmail makes sense in a mystery like this but some is seemingly included just because they can. Also I can’t decide if the amount of lesbian sex is suposed to be inclusive or exploitative.
Conclusion: an engaging story that would have gained in being a bit tighter.

Started The Tower (Britbox/ITV) starring Gemma Whelan
A nearly retired officer and a newbie go to a tower block’s roof to prevent a teenage girl and a little boy she may have kidnapped from hurting themselves. The officer and the girl end up dead 50 feet below. Whelan (wearing a very nice burnt orange raincoat) is a lowly DS with internal affairs who is tasked with investigating the case. The beloved officer’s colleagues aren’t cooperative and one may even be obstructing the case.
So far so good. Except for the 1st scene (dead ppl in a large pool of blood) this is PG13.

Just finished 2 good ones. Fallout was pretty entertaining with some good twists (not a Gamer, except for Zelda). Also binged through It’s OK Not To Be OK. Interesting and provocative take on mental illness. The acting was great, especially the actress portraying the ā€œpsychoā€ children’s writer and the autistic brother – reminiscent of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man. Some cheese, but it is a romcom drama.

Hacks, season 3 on Max. Hate to have to wait until Thursday for next two episodes.

For Young Sheldon watchers, second episode last night contained a gut punch, one that was hinted at several seasons ago.

I’ve been dreading it all season :frowning:

It was known since the days of The Big Bang Theory, and confirmed by Chuck Lorre that it would occur this season of YS. But yeah, it was still an emotional gut punch.

The series finale airs next week.

For anyone not keeping up, there’s a spin-off coming this fall, with the world’s worst title of Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage. This will make it one of the few shows that’s a spin-off of a spin-off

Also All in the Family begat Maude which begat The Jeffersons, I believe.

Always loved the interconnected universe of the Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction and Green Acres.

I believe the Jeffersons was a spin-off directly from All in the Family. They were Archie and Edith’s neighbors (before they were ā€œMovin’ on up to the East Sideā€).

That new Georgie and Mandy spin-off isn’t resonating with me off the bat. Guess we’ll see.

And agree that George’s death was a gut punch even though I knew it was coming.

Nope. All in the Family → Maude → Good Times would be an example of spin-off of a spin-off

The Jeffersons, like Maude, was a spin-off of All in the Family

@happy1 and @skieurope , yes you are both correct. Florida Evans was Maude’s maid or housecleaner, correct? And Maude was either Archie or Edith’s cousin, IIRC.

Hard to keep all those Norman Lear sitcoms straight!

The Girls on the Bus. HBO Max. Loosely based on Chasing Hillary book. 4 female journalists (and the challenges they face being female on the trail) covering the political campaign during an election season up to the nomination at the Democratic convention. Political drama, personal lives, scandal, democracy at peril, etc. Many parallels to 2016…but seeing a lot of 2020 and 2024, too! Smart writing.

Maude is Edith’s cousin. Florida was Maude’s housekeeper.

Fortunately the Internet wasn’t in households at the time, so nobody could spend their time itemizing the inconsistencies of Florida Evan’s story on the 2 shows.

I was still shocked last night as I had wrongly assumed it would occur in the last episode. Oh my! I really love the George character. The actor did a great job with that role.

Collateral is a BBC miniseries that is now on Netflix. It’s excellent.

"Collateral’ is a four-part thriller set in London that takes place over four days. When a pizza delivery driver is shot down in South London, Detective Inspector Kip Glaspie, played by Carey Mulligan, is left in charge of the investigation and refuses to accept the murder as just a random act of violence. As she investigates, she soon finds herself being drawn into the darker side of underworld London. At the same time, politician David Mars, played by John Simm, becomes embroiled in the events due to his rocky relationship with his unpredictable ex, Karen, and a vicar struggles to conceal her affair with the only witness to the shooting. Disparate worlds collide and become entangled as the investigation develops.

I actually like that they didn’t end the show on this. It would have been horrible :frowning:

Seconding Collateral.

For me one of the sweetest moments on TBBT was when Sheldon pulled out a VCR tape thinking he was going to watch one of his nerd shows, but he finds video of his dad coaching his football team. It’s been a bit since I’ve seen it, but I remember being very touched by how Sheldon gets so quiet as he discovers this footage. I’m looking forward to grown up Sheldon and Amy appearing on the YS finale next week.

I watch Young Sheldon on a week delay on the cbs website because we don’t have CBS or Paramount Plus. But I knew what would/should be happening by series end because of Big Bang Theory created storyline. I never knew how many people watched Young Sheldon until I started seeing comments about this week’s episode. I hope MeeMaw and Coach continue in the spin-off. They’re my favorites. And could be their own spin-off.
