I just started watching the Noble House mini-series on Prime (Pierce Brosnan plays the head of Struans (Jardines)). It’s still entertaining, but what I am loving is the city shots of Hong Kong in the late 80’s. It’s basically what I remembered of Hong Kong from the 90’s when we lived there vs the massive buildup since then. It seems you can almost skip a rock across Victoria Harbor these days to Kowloon.

My DH and I watched the first episode of High Potential. We enjoyed it, but I’m not sure that we’ll stick with it. I think I may get tired of her zany, know it all schtick pretty quickly. I loved Castle and other things it’s been compared to.

I watched it and liked it well enough; very old style nighttime soap opera. Certainly plenty of plot holes but it didn’t really matter. Usually I’m not a Nicole Kidman fan but I enjoyed her here.

I did end up reading the book yet again and still enjoyed it.

After a couple years of subscribing to other streams, I returned back to Netflix a few months ago. I’ve been watching Netflix almost exclusively since then. Some of the new to me shows that I particularly enjoyed are below. I am listing in the order of most binged, rather than watching at slow pace. I only listed shows I had not previously known about that may be lesser known in US (most were originally non-US shows). Among more well known shows, I also liked Squid Games, Stranger Things, and Cobra Kai.

  • Alice In Borderland – Such unique and over the top characters, combined with world building and a captivating plot, where the viewer cannot help to speculate about what the Borderlands are think what they’d do in the Borderlands. Some of the games are also interesting and clever (some also have obvious flaws). I particularly liked the solution to 4 of clubs, which was the distance in 120 minutes game in underground waterway. I wasn’t as enthusiastic about 2nd season, which seemed rushed and had explanation of Borderlands that I found unsatisfactory. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to 3rd season.

  • End of the F***king World – On paper this does not seem like a show I’d like – an awkward teenage romance dark comedy. However, it develops in to something else, sort of a combination between Dexter, Bonnie & Clyde, and Freaks & Geeks. The main characters are truly interesting, as are their interactions with others. Many of the episodes left on cliffhangers. It’s easy to binge the first season, which is not much over 3 hours.

  • Baby Reindeer – I just started watching this show yesterday and am already on episode 4. I was surprised to learn that this is based on a real story that actually happened to the Richard Gadd, who plays Donny on the show. Gadd claims the real life Martha sent over 40,000 emails to him I’m not sure how it will turn out, but I find the story captivating. The show won 6 Emmys earlier this month – the 3rd highest total after Shogun and The Bear.

  • Physical 100 – I generally don’t like reality shows. It’s been many years since I watched one. However, I enjoyed Physical 100. I’ve never seen a show quite like this – 100 competitors who are supposed to be at the top of their sport or field, competing in physical challenges, with an emphasis on determining which is best across a combination of many fields of athleticism. Watching requires less attention or thought that the others on this list, so I like having it on in the background while doing other things, such as posting on this forum.

I also saw on my DVR that the new season of Murdoch Mysteries, which drops in Canada on Monday Sept. 30, is dropping here on October 7, one week later. Normally, we wait unitl February for the new season.

For fans of Kim’s Convenience, the actor who played the father joins the cast of Murdoch as a detective.

H and I started watching The Mallorca Files recently. It’s not that the plots in the show are great, but we are loving all of the scenery in Mallorca and have now added it to our list to visit the next time we go to Spain.

You might want to check out Culinary Class Wars, which is a combination of Physical 100 and Iron Chef. Similar format, they start with 100 chefs and then eliminate them through various cooking contests.

A good part of what appeals to me about Physical 100 is the physical nature of the challenges, as I am interested in athletics and working out. For example, there was a recent post in the fitness thread of this forum in which a poster mentioned his long term goals were 15 pull-ups, 25 body weight bench presses, and 20 minute 5k. I can do 2 out of 3, but the 3rd is especially challenging for me, with my lack of training and body type.

I’d be interested in athletes in which sports and which body types would be most likely to succeed in all 3, and which ones would not. Athletes that only focused on strength wouldn’t make the 5k time. Distance specialists wouldn’t make the strength exercises. I’d expect best would be a male athlete in 20s with very low body fat and an athletic body… maybe 6ft and 150-160lb.

The CC poster’s goals above resemble some types of military exercises, so how would Agent H do, who is a Youtuber with claimed top military background? Or the 2 firefighters that actually were in special forces? Or the 97 others that include:

  • 40+ year old Judo champion competing who expects to surpass the largely younger group of 20s year olds, and is especially well respected (Korean culture likely contributes)
  • Gold medal skeleton racer
  • Ice climber rescue team
  • Pole dancer
  • Arm wrestling champion
  • …

Both Season 1 and Season 2 of Physical 100 were won by athletes from one athletic discipline. I won’t mention which discipline, just in case members would like to watch. I watched both seasons and loved it.

And as I mentioned in the Fitness thread, it all depends on the quality of those pull-up and bench press reps. Most do not have ā€œproper repsā€ with ā€œfull range of motion.ā€

Thanks to people who recommended Netflix —-la grande Madison Tokyo —— finished last night, enjoyed so much, the photography a bonus. Inspired me to elevate dinner last night, husband was happy

I need to go back and watch/re-watch Money Heist from the first season. I started watching somewhere in Season 3 I think with one of my kids when they were home for school break and got completely sucked in. There’s also a spin-off, Money Heist: Berlin that’s a prequel of that character. I haven’t watched that one yet.

First two seasons are so good, definitely go back. I saw the spinoff but not sure I want to watch a prequel of Berlin. If it was about the Professor, I would definitely watch.

When I wrote the comment above, I had watched the first 3 episodes of Baby Reindeer. After watching the final 4 episodes, I have a very different impression. For the first time ever, I decreased my Netflix rating of a show, switching from thumbs up to neutral. I didn’t dislike the show, but if I could go back again, I would have chosen one of the many other Netflix shows that I’d prefer.

What made the first 3 episodes so captivating was the Martha character. If the show is going to do a backstory, I’d want to learn Martha’s backstory – how she came to be a serial stalker who seeming spends her entire day contacting and obsessing over the person she is stalking, including a wide range of emotions, deluded fantasies, and lack of normal self control and embarrassment. Or what happened with the other past stalking situations, or her law career, or the many other things that are briefly mentioned without detail.

Instead the remaining episodes focus on Donny’s backstory and how he came to welcome being stalked on some level and keep coming back after seeing redflag after redflag, as well as some dark events in his background. The show switches from a lighthearted almost fun Martha coming in the bar each day to dark events in Donny’s background that can be difficult to watch. I suppose this is a limitation of shows based on true stories. Gadd writes about his background and his feelings. He doesn’t know this degree of detail about Martha’s background and how she came to be what she is, so he can’t write about that.

The conclusion has a similar limitation. Fictional stories can have a conclusion that lends itself to the audience – writing a fitting ending for each character that the audience finds satisfying. Stories based on true events are limited by the conclusion that actually happened, which often isn’t as satisfying. This also makes the show different from the lighthearted stalker trope that appears in many shows (2 and a Half Men) or violent fictionalized stalker trope that appears in many movies (Cape Fear) to something original that feels more real and more emotional.
