We stumbled across another British “soap opera” called “Monarch of the Glen”. Early 2000’s. It’s one of those where the characters draw you in. And the setting in Scotland.
Yes–we’ve watched the first 3 seasons getting the DVD sets from our local library system. If Outlander hadn’t made us want to go to Scotland (been there twice), this show would have done it!!
I very much enjoyed the first 4 (of 10) episodes of “Nobody Wants This” on Netflix. It’s about a Rabbi and “shiksa” meeting and hitting it off. Then add their families. A rom com with Kristin Bell and Adam Brody.
Just watched the first four episodes myself! Adore Kristen Bell.
I’m watching Arranged on Hulu - a series following 3 couples where parents arranged their marriages ( Romany, Indian and Southern). They’re followed after the wedding to see how they negotiate life together. I’m finding it fascinating.
We binged The Perfect Couple during the miserable rain we’ve had the last several days. It wasn’t great, but very watchable.
I finished up all 10 episodes of Nobody Wants This. I really enjoyed it. Great ensemble cast too.
on final ep (8 total) of lessons in chemistry.
excellent show
I read a lot about Sally Rooney’s new novel, inspiring me to start “Normal People” on Hulu tonight. Any fans?
Loathed Normal People with a white hot passion. But that’s me. I hate stories about people who are miserable for no really good reason. I also found the depiction of a first sexual experience to be incredibly unrealistic.
Physical 100 season one was good. The English dubbing is awkward and corny, but the challenges are very interesting. Once the contestants are narrowed from 100 to the final 20 the challenges completely favor males, so even the impressive women get eliminated. The final event was so hard, it seemed like torture really, the better athlete won.
Season two…not great, it didn’t have similar personalities, and some of the events went on way too long, across multiple episodes. I found myself fast forwarding through the weed out portions of a challenge to watch the final matchups. The final event was cool, but I was watching just to finish the series at that point.
I hope they produce an American version.
Loved this show. One of the best explanations to non-Jews of why intermarriage is so problematic for Jews. As one of the characters says “ We are trying to repopulate a people”.
Almost all of the challenges favor males to some extent, which is the nature of the game. Elite men surpass elite women in most areas of athleticism. This difference is particularly notable in individual head to head events that are not a close function of body weight, which are a necessary part of the competition, if the show wants to “find the ideal human physique based on performance”, as it claims . Had the show been all male, had a separate women’s division, or gave bonus points for being female; it would have been far less interesting than existing in my opinion, where many competitors and viewers mention and discuss this gender advantage.
For example, the first event was hanging from a bar. Several contestants make a big deal about the woman who was able to surpass almost all the men and make final few, repeatedly mentioning her gender. Or in the subsequent death match challenge, many contestants made a big deal about gender differences, particularly in male vs female “death matches.” Or in the team challenges, many contestants make a big deal about how many women are on the team, or made assumptions about about how the last choice team that is primarily composed of women will do in the event.
I do think it was theoretical possible for a woman to make it beyond top 20, particularly in Wings of Icarus. The remaining female competitors seemed to have a similar conclusion, with all competing in Icarus except for the one who intentionally chose an event she expected to lose, to help her team as a whole (and indirectly dooming the remaining women) since she expected her ice climber / mountain rescuer teammate was best option for a climbing event that had a large overlap with his experience.
I hope they produce an American version.
I suspect that Physical 100 was initially a Korean show largely because Squid Game was initially a Korean show. Squid Game was a huge hit – the most popular show ever on Netflix, as measured by worldwide viewing in first 28 days, and especially popular in its home nation of Korea. After the success of Squid Game, Physical 100 was billed as similar to an in real life Squid Game. The director of the show said curiosity about the winners of best body and man of the month at his fitness center inspired him "to produce the real-life Squid Game.”
I’d also like a version without bad English dubbing – not necessarily American… a show that had top athletes from around the world would also be great. The shows creator mentioned a worldwide version being a possibility.
I enjoyed “Penelope,” a YA series. It’s a quick watch. You have to suspend disbelief, but that’s OK. I will warn you that the series ends with a gut punch. Totally caught me off guard.
You can’t “binge” it yet because they’ve only released 2 episodes, but The Penguin on HBO has been surprisingly good.
The series essentially starts where the movie The Batman left off.
Agreed. With all the prosthetics, Colin Ferrell is unrecognizable
Half disappointed in Season 4 of “Emily in Paris”. But can’t disagree with the fantastic settings and scenery! And fashion that I NEVER see. I am pretty sure that’s why I watch it.
We finished Emily in Paris Season 4 last night. It wasn’t my favorite season, but I still enjoy the scenery, fashion and food!
In case anyone is using Emily in Paris as a travelog, be aware that several years ago the government made it illegal to sit on the Spanish Steps and will gladly hand out €250 fines to violators. No word if Emily was fined.
For anyone watching/bingeing Van Der Valk on PBS, Sunday’s episode featured a familiar Downton Abbey actress—Raquel Cassidy, who plays Baxter, Moseley’s wife. On Van Der Valk she was a blonde, but her face seemed familiar!
