We finished Department Q last night and enjoyed it. We started Untamed which I’m on the fence on so far. Not sure if I like it or not.
We enjoyed Untamed, but it wasn’t amazing. The scenery is stunning. The characters were likeable, especially the female ranger. I loved her. The story was OK, but the ending fell flat in my book. But the scenery… You can’t dislike a show when it has scenery like that.
I came across the holiday episodes of The Great British Baking Show while searching Netflix for something to watch and guess what I found?! The cast of Derry Girls were the contestant bakers for Season 3, Episode 2, The Great Festive Baking Show. It’s hilarious, as you’d expect . If you’re a fan of either show, check it out.
I’ve been watching episodes of Dept Q interspersed with Platonic. One light and funny, the other anxiety-provoking. I read somewhere that Dept Q was renewed for another season.
We blew through Dept Q in less than a week, unusual for us. I would have been ok with a little less of bloody/violent scenes, but the interesting characters grow on you.
I loved the scenery and accents in Dept Q, the actors were all excellent, and I had to fast forward some of the scenes in the “tank” to keep it enjoyable. Dark but a winner for me.
Stick was pleasant, well-acted, but kind of “expected” (where Ted Lasso was constantly unexpected).
I’ve watched the Derry Girls episode a number of times. So much fun!
Derry Girls and Detectorists, I could watch any episode any time and have a blast!
I largely agree. Overall I enjoyed Untamed, more so than any other series I recently finished. I found it to be a captivating murder-mystery, but what really separated the show from the countless other murder-mysteries was taking place in Yosemite. There is lots of beautiful scenery, as well as introducing the viewer to unique life in the park, such as people choosing to live off the grid in the park for varying reasons. Many of the characters are interesting. I particularly liked the protagonist from a character perspective, rather than from a personal perspective.
The problem is with the writing. There are too many extremely unlikely coincidences/events to facilitate the plot, as well as plot armor, and use of well known tropes. The final episode is most problematic in this respect, leaving a bad aftertaste for me. I suspect the writers struggled with the six ~45 minute episode mandate. I also wish the writers took the time to make the specific locations in Yosemite more similar to reality, or better yet actually film a portion in Yosemite. I don’t think this would detract from the plot in any way, and I expect many who have been to Yosemite would appreciate this level of detail.
I started watching this because I went to Yosemite for the first time in June. So it’s great to see the places I was just at. I’m not big on mysteries or procedurals but I do like the young ranger, the horses, and the scenery.
I was surprised to read that NONE of Untamed was actually filmed at Yosemite.
We watched first 2 episodes of “Sneaky Pete”. Premise is a conman assumes identity of his cellmate to hide with the grandparents (who have not seen him since he was a boy 20 years ago) after prison release. Hiding from the conman he conned. So far we like it.
I’ve been on a Downton Abbey binge getting ready for the new movie. I only have movie #2 left now. I have enjoyed re-watching so much as I think the series holds up so well and I am also enjoying connecting some of the characters to their post-Downton work. For example, Spratt the butler appears on All Creatures Great & Small; Princess Mary from the first movie is Miss Scarlett; etc. I hope the new movie will wrap the story up with a bow and leave me in both tears and smiles.
I’m looking forward to the movie!
If you want more Spratt the butler in other roles watch Ted Lasso.
I have seen him in Ted Lasso as well. Thanks for the reminder!
One of the Downton Abbey trailers shows Mary helping her parents tour an apartment and understand what living in one is like. If the family ends up losing the house I will NOT be satisfied with that as an ending.
I just found out that The Good Place is leaving Netflix at the end of the month. Going to Prime which I have but assuming there will be commercials. So I’m doing a hasty binge rewatch which I’ve meant to do for years! Thoroughly enjoying!
I’ve never even been to Australia but apparently I have an Australian sense of humor because I laughed out loud more times while watching the latest season of Fisk than I have at any show in a long time. Some of it is so silly but made me laugh anyway.
If you haven’t seen it, I wrote this about Deadloch when it came out, you might love it!
I also just finished Deadloch - which is bananas! Some of the characters are so very off putting! The Australian accents and the bawdy swearing was at first a bit much, but then became actually (dare I say it) endearing? Hilarious?
“Funny Broadchurch” is an apt description, it’s laugh out loud funny at times and the dark humor is very dark at other times; don’t read or watch previews before you start, and get through your (perhaps) initial distaste of various characters and just go for the ride. It’s wild.
I loved Deadlock. Pulling off legit satire/comedy together with a legit mystery is not easy.
If anyone wants to try, I would recommend 2 things: 1/ a bad word used copiously is not as bad in Australian English as in American English - I had to substitute “punk" in my head to make it bearable. 2/a character that is rather off-putting has good reasons for acting the way they are, and you’ll know at the end of episode 3 or 4 (forgot which). Also that behavior is supposed to be a send up of the usual “rogue detective guy who comes to save the day” trope.
