Binge watched tv shows (Part 2)

DH and I started season one of The Diplomat tonight. Got through three episodes and are hooked.

My advice would be to go straight through episode 3 season 3 - these are fantastic and hard not to binge.
Then skip episodes 4&5 in season 3 and resume at episode 6.
(I’m in the middle of episode 7 and kind of rolling my eyes at some contrived shenanigans involving the housekeeper having to go to the greenhouse and 2 characters not even putting up chairs in front of doors but that’s common in Tv fiction. Also, not buying that Kate would trust a lobbyist that much.)

Shetland returns next week! :raising_hands:
Tosh and Calder have to go to a little island where a social worker has been found dead.

Also for those of you with iPlayer: is The Ridge any good ?

OOH, I wonder when the new season of Shetland hits Britbox?

Those with the ā€˜premier’ version of Britbox get the newest season of Shakespeare & Hathaway in late November, 10 episodes released weekly. We the hoi polloi must wait.

Nothing announced, but my guess is the first episode (Shetland releases weekly) will be 12/10 on Britbox

We finished The Diplomat tonight and loved it. Really hit the sweet spot between saccharine West Wing and dark House of Cards.

My husband has been out of town. Hoping to watch The Diplomat when he returns. Or first finish Slow Horses. Decisions, Decisions.

We started watching Down Cemetery Road last night, on Apple TV. I think it was written by the guy who did Slow Horses. After 2 episodes we like it.

Quite enjoyed Mr. Scorsese, which is a documentary television series on AppleTV.

Finished Nobody Wants This. I’m Back on the ā€œlikeā€ train.. While I know that 10 episodes is pretty typical for streaming, when they are short episodes it WAY too short to make much plot movement.

It’d be better if they filmed 2 seasons back-to-back: it’d be short but we’d get the second half within 6 months and it’d feel more completre, more satisfying.
They’d have time to assess success for Season 1 before they shoot Seasons 3&4.

I don’t like short seasons even for longer episodes/dramas because there’s not enough time for character development, for background, etc., all the depth you can find inherent to the form and the length of a TV show vs.a film.
I miss the 20-22 episode seasons, even if that’s probably too long. Perhaps 13-18 episodes, every year, with a pause of a few months between seasons.

And of course :rofl:you have this season of The Diplomat, which really stretched for its 8 episodes and could have done without episodes 4&5.

we’ve only finished 4 episodes of Nobody Like This and it’s gotten better. There were a couple of scenes that tickled our funny bones and we both couldn’t stop laughing. I rarely laugh at TV, I find things humorous but never typically LOL funny. Looking forward now to the rest of it.

Any reviews of The Lazarus Effect? DH just added it to our list.

We bought a new 75 inch TV for the basement a few years back. I never watch it, nor does DH who had to have it. Our DVD isn’t working in the FR and there are a few things I’ve wanted to watch, so the past week I’ve gone downstairs.

I hate the high definition. It seems like I’m watching a play. I went to Chatgpt and it said it’s great for sports, but a lot of people don’t like what I’m seeing. It called the ā€œsoap opera effectā€ (which is exactly it!) and that it looks like a cheap camera is filming, unlike the cinematic effect we are all used to, which I like much better! There were instructions on how to manipulate in settings, which I haven’t tried yet. Have any of you experienced this, too?

My sister has a huge HD TV and I have the same reaction to it. No advice on how to adjust settings but imho ā€œhigh def flatnessā€ doesn’t really improve the experience for me.
I don’t watch sports, just shows, documentaries, news.

Maybe needs another thread, but 2nd TV question: Has anyone noticed so many shows having a ā€œblue tintā€? DH doesn’t want to manipulate settings, and says that the blue tint effect is very common. It is starting to bother me when teeth are blue!

We are soap opera effects hater too! After we got our TV several years back, it drove H absolutely crazy until I dug into the settings and switched it. It’s better now. I wish they would make that the default and then people who want the soap opera effect could figure out.
