I agree that The Pitt is the most realistic medical drama that I am familiar with. However, across TV in general, there are many more realistic shows. For example, I also tried watching the show Show Me a Hero this week. SMAH was written and created by David Simon – same person who created The Wire. And like The Wire S3, it goes in depth about urban politics and housing, digging in to underlying causes and challenges faced by a lower SES group including politics, racism, and villains with conflicting motivations rather than generic bad guys.
Unlike The Wire, it’s based on a true story. The Wire is a fictional account inspired by Simon’s experience as a journalist in Baltimore. Show Me a Hero is Simon describing real events in Yonkers, emphasizing experiences of mayor Nick Wasicsko. As best I can tell from the first episode, Simon sticks to the true story, making the show seem extremely realistic. I grew up in NYS during a similar period, so it feels especially realistic to me. There seems to be great care in the filming, including keeping everything period specific.
Show Me a Hero is truly an extraordinary show, and I’d give a great praise to the quality and realism. Nevertheless I didn’t make it through the first episode. While a high quality and realistic show, I didn’t find the show especially interesting. I’d instead favor the Simon’s far less realistic show – The Wire.
SMAH a more extreme example of my earlier comparison between The Pitt and House. Example Rotten Tomato ratings are below. Critics and audiences as a whole like both shows, but critics as a whole are more likely to favor The Pitt, while viewers as a whole are more likely favor House. For SMAH, critics love it, but it never found the same appeal among typical audiences, becoming one of HBO’s least viewed shows of the year.
The Pitt: RC Critics = 97% liked, RC Viewers = 87% liked
House: RC Critics = 89% liked, RC Viewers = 96% liked
SMAH: RC Critics = 96% liked*, Google Viewers = 63% liked
