Hooked on (not new!) British crime drama “Unforgotten” right now. A bit of a confusing start with lots of characters, but we’re immersed now! Hoping the next season is as good as the first.
Quite enjoying Ludwig on Britbox, it’s a mystery inside a mystery and rather fun and tongue in cheek; great actors.
It’s incredibly well-done, weaving separate stories and characters, past&present, seemingly effortlessly (which takes great skill), and it’s both suspenseful&moving. Series2(3?) still resonates for me.
I do think they eschewed the harsh likely real ending at the end of the very last series, but think being realistic might have been too hard for viewers so I’m pretty divided (do I want to feel awful hoping for change spurred on by confronting reality or do I feel desperate that a realistic ending wouldn’t change anything and therefore let’s have the most hopeful possible take?)
Thinking of TV that changed reality for the best: Mr.Bates and the Post Office
Seconding your recommendation (Ludwig)!! Especially if you like quirky characters and puzzles
Anyone watching The Handmaid’s Tale? I’m on edge with every new episode this season. I have no idea how it will end, probably a mix of satisfaction and anguish, but I’m truly enjoying it. I think 4 more episodes to go.
I haven’t started the season yet, it’s something H doesn’t watch so I’m keeping it on the back burner for when he’s out of town.
I had gotten so used to shows dropping all episodes at once, I now hate when they started pulling it back to one episode a week.
I’m watching! Can barely wait for the next episode and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Extremely late to the game, but H and I just finished a complete watch of The West Wing (never saw it all before). Took us about six months and we immensely enjoyed it. Trying to figure out what’s best for a joint watch after this–my D strongly suggested Madame Secretary as the closest thing, but I just read it’s leaving Netflix next week. Darn! (I watched one episode of Veep and no, definitely more like the anti-TWW.)
I love The West Wing.
Try Borgen (Netflix). In particular, I loved the first season. Reminded me of TWW. In Danish but very well dubbed.
Also can try The Diplomat (also Netflix).
If you never saw the movie American President (Amazon) it is worth a watch. Written by Aaron Sorkin and feels like a precursor to TWW (you will see some familiar faces).
I loved Sorkin’s The Newsroom on HBO with Jeff Daniels & a great cast. I’ve watched TWW all the way through several times (3?) and some episodes many times (In Excelsius Deo & Two Cathedrals) and have watched The Newsroom through 3 times. Love them both!
I loved Madame Secretary, but I also have a serious girl crush on Tea Leoni.
Thanks! We’ve already watched Borgen and The Diplomat–otherwise great suggestions
Ack I was so ready to watch that next.
I’ll check that out, thanks!
My D and I watched all of The West Wing in 2020 during the pandemic and loved it. D and her partner were quarantining (sp?) with us at our vacation place during that time.
A recommendation: a series that features political drama, which I’ve enjoyed is, The Diplomat. There are two seasons of it on Netflix and it’s scheduled for a third season later in 2025.
I loved West Wing and watched it many times (used to be on Bravo, on Netflix, and I think i first watched it by borrowing the CDs from the library).
I liked Madame Secretary at the beginning but got tired of it long before the end. Maybe I’d do better if I could binge watch as sometimes I lose the thread during big breaks , like over the holidays or summer.
We originally watched some of it during the pandemic with our S, who’d come over once a week for dinner and TV. We only did the first four seasons then (S is a Sorkin only guy). We (H and I) started it over last fall and went through all seven seasons. Things changed over time, but we always enjoyed it. Definitely in withdrawal~
Did the Diplomat already, thanks.
We watched the first episode of The Four Seasons on Natflix and really enjoyed it.
Enjoyed The Four Seasons and looking forward to season 2. The original movie is also on Netflix so we watched it (again) after we finished. Similar but different and I’ll have to say it’s very hard to beat the original.
