Bombing hits BostonMarathon

“I was talking about the responses to the MIT killing and the use of the cell phone to track the car(s) to Watertown. The first engagement has been reported to be one between a couple of cops and offduty officers. Why not engage them with larger forces? How did one escape? Not surprising that no details have surfaced.”

So they should have waited until more LEO showed up to engage? That makes no sense.

Where did you hear they were tracking the highjacked car from their cell phones?

I figured they didn’t even know they had highjacked a car or it’s description until the it was reported by the person whose car it was after they dropped him off. Then I assume police in the vicinity took chase.

Can you imagine being the lawyer who has to defend this kid?

Some you seem to be implying there are only 2 answers to the rent & car question: either the rent was low and the car was old; or they received funding from some outside terrorist group.

There’s a rather obvious third possibility, which is that one or both of them was a thief, like their mom who was caught shoplifting more than $1,000 at Lord & Taylors, or a drug dealer. It’s at least a possibility.

Supposedly they were photographing and indexing all of us at DC peace marches in the 70’s.

Arg, the Kerr is interesting. Supposedly, the Miranda impact will be different, based on whether the Feds or MA get jurisdiction. I haven’t pursued that yet.

I don’t find it a mystery, amazing or the fault of the cops that the young man got away in that shootout, but it may well be a debacle in terms of what went down. When more info is released, we’ll see if that’s the case. I don’t think that was a job well done, but sometimes you gotta let the bad guy go if bombs might be in the picture and they were. Though I think he was just quick and lucky. But no rah rahs or pompoms from me on that part of the story.

As for his rights, heck, I’d give him immunity from a lot of things like the death penalty if he has critical info on groups that are recruiting and sponsoring these things and others involved in this and who knew about this. That list would be ever so valuable. That he is going to have to be put a way for a very long time is a given. He is done. At age 19, he went from a college student with an opportunity to move into the upper middle class and a good life, to being a felon of the worst sort, a terrorist. Done deal here, no Miranda or Miranda. The carnage that was done at the Marathon will not be something forgotten or forgiven ever, nor should it be. So he’s done. It’s a matter of how, and something might be arranged if he can and will give valuable info. I’m afraid he doesn’t know much. The one who likely did is dead.

Dietz… Touchė.

cpt: My issue is that the from the FBI’s statement they werent even working on him as a possibility. Yeah, there may be a lot of people on the list, for a lot of different reasons, but shouldn’t you at least be WORKING the list???

re: the housing. From the WSJ we know that they were on public assistance.

I heard that the car was tracked because it was a newer car with a tracking device. I think this was after the owner was dropped off and called the cops though.

Here’s an interesting page I found with Inman Square demographic info – it’s really all over the place, some very high income and some very low. Obviously any rent does need to be paid somehow, though.

[Inman Square neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts (MA), 02139, 02141, 02143 subdivision profile - real estate, apartments, condos, homes, community, population, jobs, income, streets](http://www.city-data.com/neighborhood/Inman-Square-Cambridge-MA.html)

Edward Deveau, the Watertown Chief of Police, explained that they were tracking the hijacked car through that victim’s cell phone. He also described the engagement and the tossing of the third cooker during that engagement.

Quoting CNN interview with Wolf
Police chief: Manhunt began with fierce gunfight in dark street - CNN;
From there, the brothers allegedly carjacked the Mercedes, forcing the driver to withdraw money from an ATM. They eventually let the victim go, but not before telling him they were responsible for both the marathon bombings and the police officer’s death, Deveau said.
Luckily for law enforcement, the victim’s cell phone remained in the SUV, allowing police to determine the vehicle was in Watertown and eventually catch up to it.

The father was a car mechanic so having a line on cars would not be unusual. My son wanted us to look at a Mercedes a few years ago that was just a few thousand dollars, that someone he knew wanted to unload. If you have young people who are involved in the community, there are often deals that come up, even legitimate ones. My mechanic called a few years ago on a deal on practically new tires for my car that came his way. He thought about me, as he had just looked at my car and it was due for tires the next go around. So these things work in many communities.

But I wouldn;t be surprised if illicit activities were in the picture. What surprises me, however, is how the parents were able to return to Chechnya and start up living there. Are they on social security or something from here? There isn’t much flowing there, and they weren’t rolling in it here either. That the brothers were able to eke out a living here isn’t as much of a mystery.

Scary that the terrorist was a lifeguard at a Harvard U pool. Anyone swim there?

You are quite right. I think he and the boat tarp man should share in the reward, perhaps not even equally (I’d give your guy a greater percentage).

When a list is that big, it’s useless. That’s the shame of the matter. Even if tiered, he would have been in the low level of it, as he was cleared. It is probably a waste of time going through that list, but that is not something the government or FBI are about to address. I’m probably on that list.

Reality check. “pretty much a typical college student” except that he’s a murderer which makes him disturbed and not typical.

Yeah, that explains attempted mass murder, and successful mass maiming. That’s why other college students, both those here at the graciousness of the U.S. government, and those enrolled as natives. do not commit murder when their self-importance is eroded, such as joining a freshman class of equal accomplishment as themselves, such as experiencing academic or personal crises as undergrads.

many people lost limbs, many were seriously injured, the country was traumatized, and 4 families who did not engage in terrorism unjustly suffered loss of life because of “immigration issues.”

Call me cold. The “reason” doesn’t matter, ultimately. And it certainly doesn’t matter to the affected families.

Whats weird is that the parents divorced (possibly to help with the FAFSA, this is CC after all) yet went back to Russia together. Is anyone getting a scamy vibe from this family?

Yet another interview with an uncle (this is the “loser” comment guy). He says they were mentored by some one:

http://www.today.com/news/uncle-mentors-radicalized-older-boston-bombing-suspect-6C9529666

Isn’t the first place they should be looking area mosques? They would probably know who Tamerlan was talking to.

epiphany, cpt was trying to be even handed, imo. Avoid all this rock 'em up stuff.

And arg, why so sure you know the whole story?

“Edward Deveau, the Watertown Chief of Police, explained that they were tracking the hijacked car through that victim’s cell phone.”

But we do not know if the cops knew to track the drivers cell phone until after he was dropped off - which was well after the MIT officer had been shot.

According to Deveau:

"The brothers were driving two cars, the S.U.V. and a Honda. The S.U.V. owner’s cellphone was still in the car. “Lucky for him and lucky for us that his cellphone remained in that vehicle, so we were able to get updates” on its location, Chief Deveau said.

Around 12:30 a.m., on a residential street, a Watertown police officer spotted the vehicles. He radioed for backup.

Law enforcement officers from across the Boston area were heading to the scene, he said, but before they could arrive, the brothers stopped their cars and opened fire."

Do you believe the first officers on the scene should have waited to confront the bombers until more LEO arrived on the scene?

Very scammy. Also, I read somewhere (can’t search for the link right now) a story about a young woman who went to see the mom for some kind of massage or facial service that she ran out of her home, but stopped going when the mom’s extremist rants started to scare her.

Objection- facts not in evidence. We dont know how many people are on the list or the resource the government has to devote to checking the names. At least they should have been working on it.

Lets just take the demographic information they knew about Tamerlan:

 • fits target age
 • Islamic
 • been involved with radical groups
 • recently out the country for a extended trip to a hot spot
 • involved in engineering
 • gym rat
 • lives close to the location of the bombings

Its not a reach to ask why he wasnt being worked as an active possibility. There cant be 5000 people with the profile in Boston.

It IS a reach to assume he wasn’t being worked.

I think they sound like a scammy family, also. Another family member said they were on public assistance. Wasn’t only the 19 y/o a citizen? I read a somewhat confusing link about whether/how non-citizens can get public assistance. I wonder if the mom/sister with the beauty business was paying taxes? When the mother was arrested last summer for shoplifting, could her conviction have triggered (forced?) her move back overseas? (And was she ever convicted?)
