Does anyone have any experience with, or information about, whether approaching admissions or FA and asking for some assistance at this point would be fruitful?
Hi @YoungOne4 , we just got an update to my D’s financial aid award. I completed their process of Appeal for Reconsideration. Google that, and the instructions will be on the website. They only awarded her $1,000 more per year. We are still appreciative, but the net cost difference when compared to her other top choice is a difference of $13,006 per year!!
I am surprised how quickly they were able to give her a new amount. It was on her portal.
Thanks for that advice, @Winky1.

I wrote a letter appealing the BU FA decision. I gave them as much compelling detail as I could. I sent along supporting documents. They sent an auto reply email saying they would get back to me. I am a firm believer that it doesn’t hurt to ask.
I have got admission into both UTD and BU with scholarship. After scholarship UTD cost me 10k and BU will cost me 35k. I want to do medicine or will pursue graduate degree. Personally I feel Boston will give better opportunites, since it has lot of medical institutions to do voluntary work etc. But I am wondering is it worth to spend 25k more every year, which will be 100K on four years. I don’t have any preference for either city. Please give your thoughts and advice.
@Alfred2018 Unless your parents are wealthy and can easily pay that extra $100,000 go to UTD. There are a few hospitals in Dallas too.
@Alfred2018 I would choose UTD. You will do great their and will be so much easier not being under that debt.
@alfred2018 , don’t incur that debt. My girl has a similar situation with Pitt. Will be a low cost with a Guaranteed Acceptance into their Physician Assistant program already. It’ll be hard for any school to compete with that, but we have our minds open. still waiting for 3 more decisions. She loves all of the schools she’s applied to. Don’t be emotional. all of your schools have qualities and programs you like, right? Be wise, not emotional about your decision unless money is no object for your family.

@FlyMordecai I’m sorry. There is no rhyme or reason, apparently, so I hope you can take it with a grain of salt. You are meant to be elsewhere…
@ave229 SAME How does one afford $70K a year?
@Winky1 These tuition dollars are unachievable to most. I would think my son who is graduating summa cum laude in May would be a student BU would like to have on campus. On another note…what does this thread think of U of Alabama? They have offered my S a full scholarship. I told my S I could then afford to put him through law school. He could complete all of his education with 0 loans then. THOUGHTS?
Love it @CatherineF ! My D missed nmsf by 1 point on her selection index score. Had she made nmsf, we were all about Bama. Wonderful package they offer nmsf and nmf. Is your son 1?
@parentfl I would like to know if there is anyone in this thread that is willing to pay $280K for an undergraduate degree? We are second generation homebuilders and finding that recent graduates have what they are calling a Student Loan Mortage of 20 years and are unable to buy homes.
@winky1 My S has a 34 ACT and 5.2GPA which qualified him for a FULL SCHOLARSHIP! Who knew? He missed being a NMF by one point as well! But he is graduating summa cum laude which is such an honor. So…as much as he wants to go to BU or BC…spending $280K is financially irresponsible. If you factor in law school that’s $500,000 in education. I believe with his stats and unbelievable ECs and recs there should have been a presidential scholarship for him. Even at that point its an expensive education. THOUGHTS?
I think it is very smart to factor in the cost of graduate school because that’s a likely (hopeful) expense on the heels of this one. And, some say the graduate school education means more and therefore that’s where you’d be willing to pay more. I cotton to the idea, but can anyone offer a basis or bases for that belief? As far as these crazy undergrad prices, how much does the prestige of the undergrad institution mean to graduate school admissions committees? It’s all a Catch 22 to me.
My take, YMMV.
$280k = NO. Don’t pay that kind of money for the college experience. Maybe go to the good/cheap state school instead and attend a top school like BU as a MA/MS/MBA or go direct to a PhD (often paid for from fellowships). Then you have the degree from the top school for much less $$$.

$100K loans might make sense for law or medicine or dentistry or certain fields at HYPS, etc where there is a clear path where you can earn it back (STEM, entrepreneurial biz, etc) and you can live with the consequences. (Though Med School on top of $100k is tough). A family member was instate public then Yale MS and NYU PhD. He had enormous loans and paid his last student loan the month before his first tuition payment for his oldest D at BC. It let him become a top person in his science field, but they never took vacations and had used cars and modest house. So, can you live with those trade offs?

There are places where $100k might make sense. We had a friend who went to GW - a super expensive school- and wanted to work on the Hill or in Government and did actually get that job because she was GW. A PharmD, PA, or PT program that need 6-7 years total probably require it but you can join a practice/firm or start one of your own at some point.
On the lower end $30k keeps you within subsidized loans which helps defer payment. I tell my kids that $30k Ioans means forget buying a car and $60k means forget buying a house especially if your partner/Spuse also has loans.
@BoroDad. Thank you! (P.S. What does YMMV mean?)
