It is good to have the determination made.
@TC5300 I don’t think you understand how MCA works.
“He had impressive computer and engineering-related extracurriculars that probably raised his MCA score.”
Total hours of EC’s is all that counts and whether or not they are related to major. You are supposed to take the average time per week for the last 52 weeks. (Although some peopel are claiming 50 hours. Really?)
It is literally a box you check.
How impressive they are does not matter at all. My daughter’s jv volleyball hours count exactly the same as the most impressive EC ever.
Rejected ):
3.85 W
30 ACT
Majoring in statistics
Lots of ECs and AP courses
This is making me nervous for UCs…
Don’t try to use CPSLO to gauge UC’s they are very different.
Just waiting on my son to check the portal to see whether he received anything. Also @spicyquiche UC has different criteria so one does not inform the other.
This is awesome. Daughter rejected today. That makes UCD and now Cal Poly. 3.9 GPA Poly Sci. Next up UCSB, UCSD & SDSU. Glad living in California paying taxes for the past 20 years has paid off.
Thank you @VickiSoCal @psssthoy I hope my personal insight essays can make up for my mediocre stats ): do they send an official rejection email or is it only on the portal?

@sdsuparent20, This whole admission process is tough. Your daughter will go to a great school, my niece had the same awful feeling about California schools and could not be happier two years later at her college, going abroad to Italy next semester. My son got rejected today also, but he applied to ten schools and seven are in California. My son had a 4.2 GPA and 30 more credits than necessary in California to graduate. I am nothing but proud of him.
@sdsuparent20 agreed. The system is broken. They want the out of state money. And the other states want the California kids. It’s just crazy! My son is waitlisted so we’ll see, and I know everyone will end up at a school that works for them, but it is a crime that these top tier kids cannot get into a Cal State school of choice. Even Cal Poly.
@sdsuparent20, I’m sorry about your daughter and hope other decisions are better for her. But as a California taxpayer myself, what exactly are you suggesting these schools do that only have space for a limited number and are swamped with a record number of applications from students with amazing stats? They can’t accept everyone. I hope your daughter has some safeties on her list–and as a taxpayer, I’m glad there are good alternatives available for all students in the extensive California community college system.
@TTdd16 @sdsuparent20 I think the point is that the Cal State (and UC) systems up their percentages of out of state admissions every year, reducing the number of spots for California kids, whose families pay for the California public universities.

@didhegetin, this is the accurate information for the UC’s and out-of-state students, so no, the percentage hasn’t increased: “In May, the UC Board of Regents approved a systemwide out-of-state student enrollment cap. Beginning in fall 2018, all UC campuses will be capped at enrolling 18 percent nonresidents — unless a campus’s 2017-18 student-body composition of out-of-state students exceeds 18 percent. At those campuses, including UC Berkeley, nonresident enrollment will be capped at the level of nonresident enrollment for 2017-18.”
And all California students in the top 9 percent of their class are guaranteed admission to a UC, but not to whichever campus they want.
And here’s the reality. Those out-of-state students subsidize the cost of attendance for our in-state students. As a California taxpayer, I wouldn’t want our taxes to go even higher to bridge the gap between in and out of state tuition.
@TTdd16 Correct. But it didn’t used to be 18%. And it didn’t used to be 9% That’s all I’m saying. I’m a 4th generation Californian and most in my family attended UCs and/or California State Universities for their education. I totally agree I do not want my taxes to increase. My son will attend a California public university in the fall, and I’m appreciative. I’m just pointing out that I understand the frustration of parents of high achieving students feeling the pinch when so many spots are afforded to non-residents. It’s a stressful time for all and I certainly did not mean to come off as uppity about. Cheers!
