Cal Poly Class of 2022 Thread

@annavy2000 did u get off the waitlist on 3/22? Or did u mean 3/2?

@CLDMom Hi Thank you for your comment! That was really helpful! I’m so excited that I got in!!

@CaliKenMom Hi! So I just got an email on Mar 22 saying that I was conditionally admitted. It says nothing about the waitlist though.

They’re supposedly releasing decisions until the end of the month. I have some friends who applied for engineering and already got in a little while ago though.

So, we’re in-state, and my kid got straight rejected from SLO (Aerospace Engineering)-- with 34 ACT and 4.2 GPA (3.95 UW). I posted complete stats earlier. Good news was last week, when he got admitted to UVA and Claremont McKenna (3-2 program). I know what others have said here, but his rejection at Cal Poly is straight up wrong. Thankfully he has other choices, but not ones that include in-state Cal State tuition.

@CaliKenMom international students are often admitted at a later date which is why the March 22 admit.

@84stag I have seen a lot of rejections for Aerospace at SLO. Is that a small major - it looks super competititve.

Awesome news on UVA and Claremont McKenna. Is the 3-2 program with Caltech? Check into that, b/c when I asked at CalTech, only 2 students (of something like 14 schools they have 3-2 program with) actually got admitted for the second part of the 3-2 at CalTech.

@sunnyschool Thanks!. CMC’s 3-2 program is with Harvey Mudd or Columbia. They’ve said it’s guaranteed entrance with a B average. Others have gone to Stanford or USC.

As for SLO, I don’t know how big (or small) the major is, but getting outright rejected doesn’t make much sense regardless for an in-state applicant with his stats. Not bragging – just trying to be factual.

@84stag - that is great! CMC and HM is like staying on campus anyway! Great schools, all of them!

@84stag acceptance rate for Aerospace eng fall 2017 was about 14% - they have freshman target enrollment of only about 80 and accept 3x that amount roughly. I would expect acceptance rate for 2018 to be lower as they have much higher # of apps this year. And the average GPA, SAT etc. plus very strong math scores will be similar to your son’s so they will have to reject more great kids just like your son than they can take. I am sure he has lots of other options. But with a 14% acceptance rate and Cal Poly’s huge popularity with to students in ENG means you cannot count on it by a long shot. Good luck!

I was waitlisted for Aerospace Engineering and I choose to remain on the list. My HS gpa is 3.99 and with my college classes I took already (my school only offers those classes for AP classes) is a 4.2. I have done a lot of extracurricular activities like NHS and 3 sport athlete. My STEM ACT is a 28 but my normal score was a 24. I have a medical thing that hinders the “grey areas” and function at more of a “black and white” viewpoint. Any idea when we that have been waitlisted May hear something back? Cal Poly SLO is a dream school of mine to attend, so I hope things turn out for the better!

Hi they stated that they would notify the waitlist students between may1-15.

If anyone is interested, the projections used for 2018 admissions are up https://content-calpoly-edu.s3.amazonaws.com/ir/1/images/2018-2019%20Enrollment%20Targets%20and%20Projections.pdf

This shows how brutal the competition was this year (at least for CENG). CS, for instance, went from planning 130 spots for 4377 applicants in 2017 to 100 spots for an expected 5297. If the usual yield numbers hold, that means somewhere around a 6% acceptance rate.

@MelloG - thanks. What’s the source?

@MelloG - Thx, I see it on the Cal Poly site. Didn’t know that existed

@byebyebaby https://ir.calpoly.edu/content/publications_reports/targets/index. Yield numbers come from the fact book https://ir.calpoly.edu/content/publications_reports/factbook/index.

@MelloG How do we approximate the acceptance rate using those numbers?

Wow, that chart is eye-opening! Definitely Computer Science is the big story there, but all the engineering majors. My son was accepted for aerospace…Looks like last year they had a target of 80 new freshman in aero and had 1622 apps for those spots…but they ended up with 101 freshman accepting spots. This year, they dropped the target to 75 aero freshman and had 1913 apps for those spots. I can see why they are making heavy use of the waitlist this year. They are trying to balance the class size. I imagine classes for such a small major are crowded for the current freshman. Will be interesting to see how many accepts spots this year and whether the waitlist moves.

@doodlebop06, you can’t, accurately, because each major has an individual yield (what percentage of those accepted choose to matriculate) and those numbers aren’t published. As a result, most of us simply use a number close to the yield for the whole university, 33%, for all majors. If you do it that way, you multiply the FTF Target by 3 and divide that result by FTF Apps. Even if we did know the yield, that would also only tell part of the story. Not all applicant pools are equally strong. It is possible for instance that getting into Aerospace might require a higher MCA than Psychology, even though Psychology has a lower projected acceptance rate.

wow admissions decisions truly are crazy. really wanted to attend slo but got waitlisted there but just found out i was accepted to berkeley today! i guess all things happen for a reason
