@LvMyKids2 the transfers are up next and they are on their own thread, then comes the waitlist.
@rogfed98 i got into software engineering on thursday
@stc9991 I beg to differ there. We are in Washington, which I understand sends the most kids from OOS. Cal Poly is very well known on the west coast in general, particularly for engineering. Many, many students from here apply and don’t get in - the cost is a huge factor as well. Even with the extra OOS fees, it’s a bargain. My son is one of those high stat kids, and he will probably be choosing Cal Poly over many of the elite private schools. He was one of the very few from his high school accepted. Cal Poly’s rep has also spread to the east coast - we know kids applying from NY and NJ. The applications bumped from 58,000 to 65,000 this year. It’s not a local secret anymore.
@stc9991 It’s definitely not just a no-name school any more. There are students from NY, NJ, DC, Texas, NC, WI, and everywhere in between. The OOS population is about 15% at Cal Poly, and admissions are highly competitive.
Accepted 3/1 - Architectural Engineering.
Cumulative GPA - 4.6
ACT 34
Does anyone know if only acceptances for the first half of the alphabet were released last week? Hoping more acceptances continue today.
@ocmom2 A few people in this thread said they have last names starting with “s” so I don’t think so.
@Bifmom: Go to myportal.calpoly.edu to log in. My son applied as a Mechanical Engineering major. No word yet. Checking portal multiple times a day. I don’t remember ever being this nervous before. Fortunately, my son does not share my anxiety! Good luck to everyone.
Still waiting IS CS. Last name high in the alphabet A-C. I don’t know what is going on. Checked application again and it doesn’t look like I made any glaring mistakes.

Even though it states on the application: “For Undergraduate applicants: Achievements reported will not be used during the consideration of your application for admission.”
I do have many but not extensive honors, awards, Science Olympiad, coding experience and other EC’s.
@Interested_Dad, regarding the “All-in” cost of attendance, this conversation probably doesn’t belong on this page, but this is where I found it, so here you go. My son is in the middle of his first year at Cal Poly. I can tell you that the tuition and room and board fees are pretty solid on the site that @MelloG listed. However, the books and supplies estimate and the miscellaneous are far more flexible depending on your situation.
Yes, books and supplies are expensive ($65 to RENT a public speaking text!!!), but they fluctuate wildly depending on major. Additionally, they aren’t consistent from term to term which can be a good or bad thing. My son a had a big upfront cost for his German textbooks, but then the professor using the same textbooks for the next two terms. It all leveled out. Two of his first term classes didn’t even have textbooks, so that helped. Kind of hit and miss. Still, he will not get to even $1,000 for books and supplies this year. BUT, he’s an English major. That matters.
Miscellaneous is all about travel expenses and outside activities. Depending on where you live, travel is either huge or manageable. If you live near a major metro area in-state, have your student try the student ride share program. My son has gotten multiple rides to and from SLO and to SF and Sacramento for $20. As for entertainment and off campus food? SET A BUDGET. We did. My son blew through his first-term cash in three weeks when school started. We held firm and he sucked it up. He is doing MUCH better since then. A freshman with that huge meal plan can make due on a limited off-campus budget.
Other expenses nobody reminds you about: HOTELS!!! There are multiple opportunities for families to visit their students such as WOW and Family weekend. Hotels in SLO know these events exist and they JACK the prices through the roof. You may pay upwards of $200 for a dumpy room that normally goes for $65. A Holiday Inn Express caliber hotel might go from $100 to over $300 depending on the date We often stay out in Pismo Beach or Arroyo Grande. It’s a short drive and there are more reasonable options if you book early. Otherwise, we avoid visiting at peak times. There are deals to be had if you are flexible. And you WILL visit. SLO is an awesome place and lots of fun for the family.
@Americanoplease Your stats are good enough for Ivy League! I am sure you’ll get into Cal Poly.
@Americanoplease I have similar stats, though not as many AP’s, and I’m still waiting for IS CS as well. I wonder if they think we’re overqualified lol
For those wondering why high-stat students applied to SLO, since we’re “obviously” going to not only get into SLO but also “better” schools so why even “bother” with SLO: First of all, you ALWAYS should apply to safety schools. Some students apply to certain schools for the very reason that they have an extremely high likelihood of being accepted, because college decisions at more selective schools can be hard to predict, and if we’re talking Ivy-level, is actually pretty reliant on luck.
Second, just because a school is considered “better,” doesn’t mean it’s better for that student. Maybe someone genuinely prefers Cal Poly SLO over UC Berkeley. Maybe SLO is actually a first choice for a high stat student. It’s definitely possible, SLO is a great school.
My daughter is still waiting for Architecture. Last name A-C. If anyone gets admitted through the portal today, please let us know! Congrats to all that have been admitted
@marinay Thank you for your support. Have you gotten your admit status yet?
@nerdgirl97 I noticed that you and I–and a few others–are in the same boat. I hope they will let us dock soon. :!!
Also, I agree with what @nerdgirl97 said about why some high stats students apply to SLO. Besides the fact that SLO is a great school, especially in the sciences, it is also the most affordable 4-yr California university of this caliber for middle class in-state families. I do not qualify for any financial aid except for student loans, but my family is not rich enough to pay for any schools I want to go. I applied to UC’s and other selective schools hoping for scholarships, but as many know getting accepted into those schools can be a crap-shoot, much less be given prestigious scholarships. The selection is “comprehensive” which means part of it is subjective: some may be moved by your essay and some may not; some may value what you do for your EC’s, some may not. For example, if a reader is not of sports-minded, s/he may not value the hours that are dedicated to that activity whether one wins or not. Or a reader may put more value in the 20 hour/week job a low-income student has, more so than a challenging but costly summer program that another student took, etc… And that is why you see so many high stats and valedictorians getting denied admissions to the UC’s and elite private colleges.
Does anyone know what the Cal Poly “EMPLID” is? I assume it is the accepted student’s official ID#, but my son did not see it on his portal or in the congratulatory email? Thanks.
Yes. It is your official ID number. You can find it on the “personal” tab once you are logged into the Cal Poly Portal.
Yes @parent365 . It is your official ID number. You can find it on the “personal” tab once you are logged into the Cal Poly Portal.
Ahhh, thanks a lot, @Goolia66 My son found it exactly where you said on that “Personal Info” tab.
@svlab112 Yes, she is listed as a freshman on the site and her GPA is CalPoly’s calculation. @momamet Still showing undecided.
@RdgGirl CPSLO admissions office hours are 12pm - 5pm, PST Monday - Friday. I’m hoping we will hear more admissions today…
Please post if anyone gets admitted today! Thx!
