My daughter is poli sci. Tell yours she is in good company. 5% acceptance. She did everything right there are just only 90 spots. Hoping for future good news for our kiddos!

Yes, crossing fingers! Good luck to both our kids!

I hear you. For better or worse that’s not the experience of kids we know coming from our HS. But as I said not the end of the world if he winds up repeating some things.

Thank you! :slightly_smiling_face:

Could anyone give me some generalized pros and cons for cal poly right now? i got accepted, and It’s been one of my top choices for quite a while, but now that i’ve been accepted to UC Davis and i’m waiting for UCSB and Stanford, i want to make comparisons. my major is psychology by the way. thanks!

Admissions are crazy. I had a son in the same boat 5 years ago and he was waitlisted at SLO. Same GPA and AP’s. He got a ton of random rejections. Ended up at Cal Berkeley. Has a killer job now. It will all work out. Don’t be discouraged!

My older son w/slightly lower stats desperately wanted cal poly for aero for his entire young life. He got in to SLO for general engineering (which had a higher acceptance rate) and was planning to go but ended up getting in to Berkeley (after getting waitlisted at Davis and UCLA). He loved Cal and thrived and is now in grad school for a masters in Aero. Don’t give up on the other UCs yet!

is Cal Poly SLO sending us on a goose chase again today?

Exact scenario played out with my son, waitlisted at SLO, rejected at Davis, but got into Cal. He is a Sophomore at CAL ME right now. It’s not over till it’s over.

Two years ago I had a kid that DID get in on the first wave. This year, I have a kid who did not get in. The kids are similar academically and applied to the same major (CS). Two years ago there were many threads anticipating second waves that didn’t come. I’m not super hopeful but I also believe that it’s in the kids hands to make the most of whatever opportunities are in front of them. It will work out!

Does SLO automatically put you into general engineering if you aren’t accepted for aero or do you have to select that as an alternate major when you apply?

Have a daughter with business major , 2nd year. Cons: getting classes is grueling and you don’t always get your classes so you have to get what you can get. This is even if you’re open to Friday classes and very early or very late meetings. Rent is expensive. If walking distance, looking for 1500-1700/mo for own room. Shared around 1100/mo. Shortage in real estate. Pros: too many to list. Gorgeous area, school campus and vibe is amazing. Great staff (mostly), great education and hands on education!

May I ask for your son’s stats?

Your son has incredible stats! Judging from so many stories of great students not hearing back from Cal Poly but then getting other incredible offers, it seems like great things lay ahead for your son and I hope you hear news soon whether from SLO or others!
It is quite baffling how CP makes admission decisions as they have only a slice of data that gives them a picture of just how amazing these applicants are (they can only see the quantity and somehow have to infer the quality of these students --given they’ve done this for years, I doubt any AI is employed in this yet - but someday I’m sure it will be).
Just for reference - My son had incredible stats, rigor, etc but did not get into CP. My 2024 daughter did get in with the same major my son applied for. She had a small fraction lower in her GPA but she has work experience in her major (he did not…but he had lots of ECs), she had 2 VAPA’s (he had 1). Other than that, they had the same number of other A-G’s. I know decisions can vary each year based on the applicant pool but I found it interesting.
My son did get into a great UC and is finishing early and is looking to pursue elementary education (which had nothing to do with his major - all we care about is that he is finding his passion which was our goal for his college experience)

Travelly his stats weren’t the best. 3.5 uw and 4.1 cs gpa… 12 Ap classes… for what it’s worth because his extracurricular were 500 hrs volunteer for police explorers and Vs cheer captain.
