Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

Where did your daughter put her ECs in CSU application? There isnt really a space for it. It seems like CSUs are all about 9-11 GPA

Can any stats majors share their stats? I’m starting to lose hope, especially after getting waitlisted by UCD and rejected by UCI

It’s a separate major that they’d have to apply to.

Thank you! My daughter has pretty good stats, so I’m a bit bummed out for her. Congrats to you and your son though! He will love it there!

Only SLO uses 9-11th for their GPA calculation. The rest of CSU’s use 10-11th but all campuses still review 9th grades for completion of A-G courses.

Yes. I agree. I was talking about ECs. There isnt any place for detailing Extracurriculars on CSU application. Which makes it a purely GPA play

Interesting - I didn’t realize SLO would potentially offer general engineering. Was that his 2nd choice on app? My daughter wanted nothing but aero at slo too, but it’s obviously not looking good since we haven’t heard. :frowning: Did your son get BS degree in aero at Cal? Or was that before they started the AE program? Glad he’s thriving and getting his masters!

Its unfortunate. So much understanding of a student and learner is lost without ECs, LOR, and Essay. And sends the absolute wrong message to kids about what matters in a learner who LEARNS BY DOING if all you show is a single metric.

My accepted stats kid:
4.24 SLO GPA
5 years English
4.5 years science
6 years math
2 years world language
5.5 years VAPA
3 years social studies
No AP or honors (not available)
~10 DE classes

Out of curiosity, how did you get a 4.24 GPA without APs and honors?

Nevermind, I saw that they took DE

Cal Poly also looks into their work experience & leadership hours on the application in this section.

It seems like the big negatives one hears about with CalPoly are getting required classes and housing. For engineering students, how bad is the registration process? It would be terrible to have to graduate late because you can’t get classes both in your major and required support classes that are prereqs. Given that rent seems rather high there for what the town is, having to do a fifth year because of registration difficulties seems to be a rather unpleasant scenario and would make CalPoly a rather expensive option. Is this a common occurrence-- being delayed because of registration difficulties? Friday classes are fine, but I know that 7 AM classes will not be received well by my kiddo.

Other minor factors in admission:

Something is off. My S24 high school profile shows 13 students attended CP SLO last year (Maybe 50 students got accepted based on yield rate). But according to S24, none of the engineer academy students get accepted yet this year… I am sure most engineer academy students applied to CP SLO, so all of them will get waitlisted or rejected?

True. You can only input hours/week for EC’s so you are correct you cannot elaborate on your EC’s. CSU’s admit based on Stats, # of a-g courses, HS course rigor, local admission area status and first generation status mainly.

SLO occasionally admits into the alternate major but normally if the primary major is in the College of Engineering, the alternate major needs to be in another college. They do not automatically place anyone into General Engineering if not admitted into the primary Engineering major.

Unfortunately, I can’t speak to Engineering students, but I can speak to classes such as Chemistry, Biology and Physics, Calculus, etc. classes.

First, freshmen are blocked into various courses. Second, if a student comes into SLO with lots of AP’s, then your “standing” will be more advanced and a student will receive an earlier registration time.

Getting into classes is competitive no doubt, but my D, in a popular science major, has always gotten her classes. She has had 8 am classes and has one this Spring quarter, but has Friday’s with no classes. She’s also had 4-6 pm and 6-8 pm classes.

And she did have a 7 am class too, IIRC, but that’s rare.

Strongly consider summer courses. It’s about $1,100 for a 4-unit course. D21 took one summer course, last summer, and will likely take another summer course this summer. It’s 5 weeks, really chill, both for students and professors, and you still have until mid September to work or just have fun. The pluses are classes are very small, which allows a student to get to know their professor. D21 has been and will be grading labs for her summer professor in the Spring. They’re kinda buddies now. :grinning:

Housing like classes is competitive. But so are other public CA schools. D21 has rented a house with 3 other females, about 10 mins from campus for a little over $1,000 plus utilities. She has her own bedroom and bathroom. You can find “cheaper” housing. Just don’t be lazy about it.

D21 loves SLO, it’s laid back, great atmosphere and weather. And the tuition of a $11,000-$12,000 is a great deal for what you receive.

Lastly, regarding registration, there are student jobs available, like a Chemistry Learning Assistant (LA). They help professors in classes, like a TA. If a student can get one of these sought after competitive positions, a student will have priority registration over everyone. First crack at all classes.

Granted this is just one data point.

This is so painful… Trying to look away. Are you out of state?

Is anyone having issues with the required Math Placement form? It says that reported test scores are listed on the survey form, but they are nowhere in sight. Student is supposed to confirm their highest scores, but with no existing information there, the form is impossible to complete. Weird. It also says that scores were self-reported, but they were actually officially reported. Hmmm
