Cal Poly SLO Class of 2028 Freshman Discussion Thread

we are moving on and waiting on the rest of the UCs. If and when Cal Poly decides to notify her it will be bitter sweet no matter what the answer at this point. To me it makes no sense to announce like this and as a Cal Poly alum I am really sad for all the kids that have to wait until 4/30 when even Berkeley announces on one day and tells everyone what that day is. I hope Cal Poly will do better in the future.

No we are in state

I just have no answers then. Wow. Congrats to your kid. It truly is a lottery and Cal Poly is just not right for my daughter.

If you are local to California and able to visit the universities that you’ve been accepted to, I say go. Get your feet on the ground…have a tour, talk with your department, check out the dorms and the surrounding area. You will feel a “fit” somewhere that is like no other. If you can’t visit, do some online tours. Consider finances. Best of luck!

Totally agree with your post.

Cal Poly SLO, SDSU, Long Beach, UCLA, Cal, and UCSD all have their admitted student day on Saturday April 13th. It will make it hard for students to attend more than one day unless you are in San Diego which is a shame. My kid applied and has been admitted to SDSU, Long Beach and is still waiting to hear from SLO, UCLA, and Cal. She has already committed to attend admitted student day at SDSU.

Same here. My DD applied for Business, 4.7 Weighted, number 7 in class of 600+ students. No one in top 10 students from her hs has heard yet from SLO. Just so odd!

In the move to year round operation, are the summer course options like you described going to be preserved?

You indicated earlier your daughter is in a research lab. Are research opportunities largely available there? My kid is in for MATE which is often a very research oriented engineering discipline.

I know the Chem department a few polymer labs and there might be relevant physics stuff. From the web it is unclear how much there is in the MATE department itself. Is it common for students from one college to do research in another?

None of us have a definite answer. I have had two kiddos accepted and their decisions came out during the initial release, BUT I have had friends with kiddos who have been waitlisted and one of them did get accepted off of the waitlist. There really is no definite answer until the school gives you a definite answer.

Same here. So Cal large public. None of the top kids have heard but the next bracket down got acceptances.

Wow! I didn’t realize that. That is a shame. I would say use Spring Break (if you haven’t had it yet) to visit others. We will be visiting a couple of OOS schools during our break.

If my kid doesn’t get in anywhere else I plan on having a FAT margarita down at SDSU… She got in early and was able to apply to the honors college. Love the school that loves you back. There just aren’t enough spots for these top stats kids. Unless she gets into UCLA(which is one in a million shot) we will do San Diego. FYI - Cal Poly also starts theirs on Thursday so if you wanted to you could attend Thursday and then drive down south. They also have a really good regular tour which unfortunately is what sold my daughter on the school last month. The admission officer talked to her directly about her app. It really moved up to close to top for her. Thanks for letting me vent everyone. I know all the kids are amazing and this is hard for everyone.

The guidance counselor at our school said that kids in the top 10% at our school are rarely accepted to cal poly (norcal private prep school). This presumably is because they know these kids are unlikely to attend Cal Poly based on historical data. Strangely, however, not a single of the 18 kids that applied this year has heard. Most years around 1/4-1/3 of the kids get into Cal Poly….

SAT score is self-reported on Cal State application. Then student sends an official score from the college board after being admitted.

See my comments on #962 and #964. Cal Poly doesn’t care about the applicant’s level of interest.

The official SAT and AP scores were absolutely submitted through the proper channels and that’s reflected on the application. (There was previously a misunderstanding on our end about when they were required, so we went ahead and did it in October.)

I’ve read all the info about math placement. The problem is with the survey form. It specifically references scores “listed above” but there are no scores on the form, so it cannot be completed properly. I appreciate the link but my question is very specific about the problem with the form. We’ve addressed it to admissions with no response. Next step will be asking math department I suppose, although it really feels like an admissions issue. I was just hoping to hear from someone else who had the form also, to know if their scores were listed or they’re running into the same problem.

Solid outlook and direction - healthy. We are in a similar position in our house and have moved on. Had the discussion last night.

Ironically, if any one is struggling at this point it is two alum parents with way too many years in SLO due to undergrad and grad. To many visits and company events on campus that built up expectations.

Amazing where Poly has gotten and congrats to those that have gotten in!

Good perspective. SDSU is an excellent school! My son got into Cal poly, but has not hear back from SDSU. Looks like he is probably not getting in there. Our DD24 had her heart set on UCLA, didn’t get in and is now at UCSB loving it! There are so many great schools in CA, we are lucky in that sense.

couldn’t agree more. My hubby isn’t an alum but we got married in SLO and I do admit that I was really excited to be back there. I know they will end up where they should. I am actually fine with rejections/WL as the reality is with only 90 spots for her major it was a 5% chance and even with her top top stats she hasn’t cured cancer or walked on water…yet! I just wish they didn’t drag it out. Makes for a very sad process. I will be talking tot he admission guy we met after this is all over but I am sure they know the feedback and for whatever reasons can’t or won’t change this horrible roll out process.

Watching this stressful rollout process the past few years makes me wonder if they perhaps use the immediate SIRs they get from the initial acceptance wave to determine how many waitlists they’re going to offer. Just a thought. I dislike the rollout no matter the reason
