Cal Poly SLO Class of 2029 Freshman Discussion Thread

I couldn’t agree with you more about quality of many OOS schools (not those available on Western Exchange) I was referring more to cost/quality for a qualified in-state CA student being Cal Grant + Pell which takes Apx. $15K off annual CA tuition vs going oos (Merit aside), CA students would only receive Pell going oos. Really Depends upon the school. Indiana Univ Bloomington tuition is 10K for Indiana kids but $39K for oos, UT Austin $11K vs $42K… Differences can be restrictive…Thanks so much for your input.

My son’s friend got rejected 2 weeks ago for kinesiology on the same day my son got admitted for Nutrition.

Congrats to your son! Thanks for sharing the info.

That’s fair, particularly comparing SDSU/CPSLO (as opposed to UCs) on cal/pell grants vs OOS. Excellent students shouldn’t have to leave, but the fact that they often have to contributes to me wanting to and being open to the benefits of OOS (if that makes sense). Good luck to you guys!!

Definitely agree. Wishing your family well. Thank you!!

I will comment as a parent of:
2021 UC, Berkeley EECS graduate (rejected Cal Poly, CS Major)
2024 UC, LA Math graduate ( rejected Cal Poly, CS Major)

I have a 2029 kid who has heard crickets from Cal Poly. Applied ‘Business’, and most likely rejected. Accepted, UC-Davis-Math.

So, Cal Poly 0-3 and UCs 3-0

Cal Poly Rubric - full year
math - 9 (max 5)
loe - 2 (max 4)
english - 4 (max 5)
science -6 (max 4)

My point…Cal Poly is a numbers game

So, IMO, a year of spanish or a year of english (via chat
GPT) would have admitted him?

They’re probably touring schools while on spring break.

Similar situation as you with two experiences so far (although only S25 has gained UC acceptance(s)). Both boys had fully weighted GPAs of 4.5+, CA-capped GPAs of 4.12/13. With fewer honors/AP courses, the capped GPA would have risen (even with no fewer B’s - which they had a few [UW GPA 3.87]). So…less course rigor, resulting in higher CSU/capped GPA, might make the difference for CPSLO (but may adversely affect some UCs that look more at fully weighted GPA).

We just received an updated notification 10 minutes ago….waitlisted oos

Interesting, I’m in-state and no update yet

His buddy from same school also received same notification at same time.

Maybe they’re starting to roll out the rest of the decisions starting with OOS. Did they both apply to the same major?

We’re out of state and have heard nothing.

Different majors. Engineering and architecture
