Cal Poly SLO Class of 2029 Freshman Discussion Thread

I’m applying out of state with a 3.7 UW and 1450 sat to mechanical engineering, how much of a reach is Cal Poly for me? I’ve been rejected from almost every school I applied to and this is one of my last decisions so I’m pretty antsy

ME is a Reach for all applicants and is heavily impacted.

Cal Poly SLO is test blind so your SAT score is not considered for admissions.

SLO will recalculate your GPA using 9-11th CSU A-G course grades. The give extra Honors points for AP/IB and CSU Transferable College Courses taken 10-11th grades only. You can calculate your SLO GPA by using the CSU GPA calculator, 9-11th grades and the # of semesters of AP/IB or CSU Transferable college classes taken for the extra Honors points.

The ME projected admit rate is around 15% and the College of Engineering SLO GPA admit range range (25th-75th percentile) was 4.14-4.25.

As an OOS applicant, you are evaluated within the OOS applicant pool and SLO does not breakout GPA or admit rate data based on major and OOS residency. SLO only has admit rate data by State. What is your state of residency?

With an Unweighted 3.7 GPA, you definitely have a shot and you should have your decision this month so Good luck.

Do you know if acceptances are starting to come out tomorrow?

I’m from Pennsylvania. Where can I find the information by state?

For 2024, 40 Applicant’s from Pennsylvania applied to the campus, 19 admitted and 5 enrolled. There is no GPA data for the admitted students.

No, I do not know if decisions will be posting tomorrow but based on the last 3 years, it is possible.

Just clarifying if you’re able to answer. Does this data mean that with Liberal Arts having an average GPA of 3.96 to 4.25, my cal state GPA (as given on the application) of 4.09 is average and gives me any chance at this school? Or is this a different GPA? I am also quite nervous. I applied for Child Development if that is helpful info.

Does anyone have info on how competitive the psychology major is? We have been told it’s the most competitive in the school?

You can check the columns on this PDF shared by @gumbymom to get a rough sense as to how the different majors compare.

The key columns are the first green column (expected number of applications — 3,657) and the first yellow column (expected available spots — 73). Assuming they admit 3x the number of available spots (though that’s a rough guess as well), the admit rate would be something like
(73 * 3) / 3,657 = ~6% acceptance rate.

From spot checking a few other majors (e.g. Comp Sci = ~9.6%; Biological Science = ~10%), it does seem like psychology has one of the lowest, if not the lowest, acceptance rates there.

SLO GPA is 9-11th grades with the 8 semester Honors point cap. The CSU GPA is 10-11th grades with the 8 semester Honors point cap so your application GPA is different than the SLO GPA listed on the Freshman profile. GPA alone is not the only selection criteria so you can use the GPA ranges for comparison but there is really no way to know your chances for any individual major.

Ah okay, thanks!

Was last year on this Monday or Tuesday?

Monday the 11th I think, people are predicting today

Do you remember what time it was last year?

Anyone think it’s odd such a selective school has such an abbreviated application? I see no one tried to do any portal astrology for this one, lol.

Think they are like the kid in class who finishes the test in 10 minutes and then waits the full hour to turn in the test because he wants to be with the cool crowd (UCs)!

Do they historically send an email first indicating there’s been update to portal?
