Once you (or your student) have received an offer of admission or waitlist offer, please consider joining the Cal Poly SLO Mustang Parents Facebook group. At 36,000 strong, it’s an amazing unofficial resource, with useful info about the school, dorms, roommates, payments, and all kinds of other things.(Cal Poly SLO Mustang Parents | Facebook). Good luck!

Congrats to all who have gotten accepted so far! My daughter is currently a Freshman and LOVES Cal Poly. Last year she narrowed her decsion down to the University of Michigan, UCSB, UW Madison, and Cal Poly. At first she was unsure of Cal Poly since it isn’t considered a big research university, but when she went to the Open House, it sealed the deal seeing all the research the school does. She was worried that if she went to a large research university with grad and PhD students, it would be extremely competitive and challenging to get research opportunities as an undergrad, and she felt like she would be just a number at those schools. She made the best choice ever. She is currently a research assistant for a professor analyzing data for a research project within her major, and the professor said that if she continues with her through the completion of the project, she will add her name to the peer reviewed article. She has been provided this opportunity and so many others all in her Freshman year. And she has made so many amazing and close friendships. My older son goes to a top OOS public research university and it is extremely competitive to get the type of opportunities that she has gotten even as a Junior. He is truly just a number as his university. The opportunities she is getting is what you would find at a private college, but she gets the same benefit at a public university. And don’t get me started on class sizes. All her classes have been between 18-40 students, and she has absolutely loved all her major courses and her professors so far. I strongly encourage you to go to the Open House weekend. It is so worthwhile. I just wanted to share my daughter’s experience to help you with your decisions. I would not be able to rave about my son’s school like I can about Cal Poly. I’m just so impressed with the school. Wishing everyone all the best in their decisions!

2nd time through the process… SLO’s waterfall rejection on the first kid was one of the most painful. Right up there with the big bold letters & confetti letting you know you were accepted (but not to your major and the chances of transferring into your desired major are nil… here’s looking at you UW Seattle). It is an up-n-down process… DS1 ended up at UCSB and DS2 accepted to SLO yesterday… looks like it could be a house-divided situation :grimacing:

Was your kid accepted to alternate major at UW? I’ve seen plenty of posts over the years of students who successfully changed their major at CP.

DS2 was accepted to Sciences rather than CS at UW Seattle. Given the (UW OOS) cost difference with SLO and Purdue and the uncertainty of ability to transfer into CS at UW, not an option being considered. Thankful to have some great options and WW (Wonderful Wife) ecstatic about SLO option as an alum

Did you also do any tours before the Open House? We did both an engineering tour and general tour last Fall. We’re wondering if the Open House will be more of the same or if it will provide additional information and a closer look at the specific major (professor panels/Q:A) each student was accepted to.

They don’t mention it on their site, but that is the type of info we’re looking for and want to make an informed decision about attending.

Hi Cal Poly alum here and daughter is current freshman in mechanical engineering. We have done campus tours, College of engineering tours and then did open house. The open house for engineering is phenomenal! We got to walk through all the labs and see students working on projects. She got to walk through so many different types of engineering labs. She got to see all the clubs displayed for the entire campus as well as engineering specific clubs and got so excited. The college of engineering had pizza for lunch and she got to mingle with professors and even ran into a professor my husband had in civil engineering years ago.

@Waiting4decisions Yes we did and the Open House was so much more informative than a tour. She got to meet and speak with professors, learn more about her major specifically and its opportunities, and got to speak with current students within her major. She also got to learn about different clubs, the honors program, and speak with those students and ask them questions about the clubs along with general questions about the school to get a good feel about life at Cal Poly. She even met her current roomate during the Open House. Everyone was so friendly and the school put together special events for the admitted students to get to know each other. She kept in touch with a few of the students that she met and one ended up becoming her roommate and they get along so well.

My friend got accepted yesterday; she is a history major, and mine still states, “Awaiting Decision.” I applied for Architectural Engineering. Has anybody heard of getting accepted for that yet?

Yes, I saw one Architectural Engineering admit post on Reddit.
