Checked the portal tonight and my son was denied. So far he was admitted at Cal State LA, Cal Poly Pomona and CSUF. I’m pretty sure he will be rejected at SDSU.

correction… academic GPA is 4.44
My daughter is in her 2nd. semester at CSULB in Mechanical Engineering and loves it. Admitted as Pre-Mechanical but was able to declare fully this semester due to AP classes taken in High School.
What other schools has your child applied to. Let them know that everything works out for a reason, and they will flourish at whatever school they land. CSULB was not my daughters first choice but is happy she is there.
What major was your child applying for? Last year for fall 2023 CSULB received over 120k application, and has yes to post what the acceptance rate was. I know a lot of the Major are capped and getting harder to get into.
All I can say is that your student is academically competitive but there a few things about CSULB that makes it a difficult admit.
-
DE/CC courses are not weighted in the CSU GPA calculation according to another poster whom contacted CSULB admissions. Apparently different CSU’s have different policies on the CC/College courses and how they are handled during the application review.
-
CSULB is the most applied CSU and usually within the top 10 of most applied Colleges in the US.
-
CSULB heavily prioritizes local applicants. Local applicants within the defined local admission area are guaranteed admission to at least Undeclared if they meet the CSU and CSULB eligibility requirements.
Applicants who are considered local based on their high school of graduation or military status who meet the CSULB minimum eligibility requirements but are not admissible to the major will be offered admission as an undeclared student.
That said, I am sure your student will have several options from which to choose by the SIR deadline and they are in good company with many very qualified students. That is why all students should apply to a wide of range of schools. Top CSU’s are no longer guaranteed admission especially if not in the local admission area.
Academic GPA is different than CSU capped weighted GPA. Maximum capped weighted CSU GPA is 4.4 and can be found on the CSU application.
@WACA:
2023 data for CSULB:
79,681 First Time Freshman Applicants (74,435 CA residents)
35547 Admitted
5756 Enrolled
47.1% admit rate
117,611 Total applicants which includes Freshman, Transfers and Graduate Students
All majors are impacted.
noone was ever rejected from his school with this GPA based on school data, we are very disappointed. Thank you for sharing though. Its getting tougher I guess. Calculated GPA 4.08
I do not have 2023 data for admitted students but for 2022, the average admitted CSU GPA for CS non-local was 4.13 so yes definitely getting more competitive each year.
CSULB - Accepted
Intended major: Pre-Nursing
Non-local CA resident
Weighted GPA 4.2
Honors College Invite: Yes
There is something wrong with CA colleges, every state supports their state kids and give them preference, not sure how CA does it. If State colleges become Reach then there is a problem for local kids.
Thank you for your insight. A “no” is always tough to receive but we look forward to other options coming our way.
CSU weighted GPA: 4.18
Total APs including senior year: 10(CSA, calc BC, stat, Chem…)
Done courses for Quantum computing, AI
Rejected for computer science @ CSULB.
So disappointing as not even waitlisted but rejected directly.
Nothing wrong with CA schools in general but we just have a huge population with many very qualified applicants which tend to apply to same schools. For CSULB specifically, 95% of the admitted students were CA HS students. 99% of the Freshman enrolled students are CA residents while less than 1% were Non-residents.
No system is perfect but CA has 9 UC’s all ranked in the top 100 of Universities, 23 Cal states, 81 Private colleges and 116 Community colleges so if a student wants a college education, then there are many options. A student can only attend 1 school.
Not sure you have seen this discussion thread but your dissatisfaction is not unique to California College admissions: https://talk.collegeconfidential.com/t/is-the-college-admissions-process-broken/
I just used the calculator and she is a 4.43. 21 a-g and 10 honors/ap… but they cap at 8.
I hope he applied to other schools. IMO CSU application process is the most ridiculous of all the schools my son applied to. No essay. Self claim EC/work without defining what they are and in a range. Any one who isn’t choose the most hours will be screwed. The A-G stuff, plus GPA cap.
are you a first year student? how did you hear back
