Son accepted for “Pre-Civil Engineering”
Does anyone know if all CivilEng students are accepted as “Pre-“? Or should we read into this that he was on the bubble / less strong a candidate than others?
Either way, great news - just wondering how to interpret this, as he’s also waiting to hear from a few other schools…
Thanks!
Freshmen admission to engineering majors is to a ‘pre-major’ status (i.e., Pre-Civil Engineering). Continuation in the major will be subject to meeting specific lower division course and GPA requirements at CSULB that indicate the student’s ability to succeed and complete the major. Transfer applicants and CSULB students seeking admission into Civil Engineering must also meet similar major specific requirements. To become fully admitted into the Civil Engineering major, all prospective students (i.e., pre-majors, undeclared, major changes) must have a minimum cumulative 2.5 GPA and complete the following lower-division courses with a minimum grade of “C” prior to earning 60 units:
Core Lower Division Major Requirements:
- MATH 122 - Calculus I (4 units)
- MATH 123 - Calculus II (4 units)
- PHYS 151 - Mechanics and Heat (Program: Civil Engineering, B.S. - California State University, Long Beach - Acalog ACMS™
4 units)
General Education Foundations Courses:
Written and Oral Communication
Thank you! I couldn’t find language confirming (or not) that this is true for all Eng majors… very helpful!
Son accepted pre- business finance.
He has a friend that graduated CSULB who really liked it.
My son got an email this morning.

Hi @Gumbymom , I went back to check SDSU, and saw it just says “Academic Plan: Psychology”. There’s no “Pre-” prefix. Does that mean he’s already admitted to the major? Or just different way of saying Pre-major?
Almost all majors are “Pre-majors”/Impacted at SDSU but it looks like SDSU has removed Pre-major designation from most majors.
The student still must meet the department specific grade criteria for courses, completion of prerequisite courses, tests, and completion of a certain number of units.
Pre-majors are automatically placed in the major when impaction criteria are satisfied; no paperwork is needed.
The student is admitted into the specific major even as a pre-major but they need to complete the requirements to remain in the major.
Daughter accepted in Biology Program. Cal State Weighted GPA 4.12. Also accepted to Fullerton and Pomona. From SoCal.
How does the housing work for Long Beach state? We won’t be down there to visit until first week in April.
Here was the housing information for 2023-24 Frequently Asked Questions About Applying for Housing | California State University Long Beach
Daughter waitlisted yesterday for Design. 4.13 CSU gpa. 3 AP classes, 6 dual enrolled JC classes (CSULB admissions rep said they doesn’t give honors weight to JC classes, though). A few clubs, no big leadership positions. Northern CA resident. Admitted so far to SSU, Sac State, CSUF & SDSU. Waitlist was expected due to CSULB’s JC weight policies and the fact that the major is very competitive there. Congrats to those accepted!
As acceptances start coming in, I am realizing that housing near campus will be a major factor in deciding which college to go to. Since freshmen are not guaranteed spots in the CSULB dorms. I am wondering if there are many affordable apartments within walking distance of CSULB. My daughter will not have a car with her no matter which college she goes to.
DD was accepted as Pre-Bio.
Also accepted at CSUF, SSU, CSUSM, CPP.
My Daughter got accepted yesterday.
Marine Science
She is a junior and will graduate a year early
Weighted GPA 4.2
Academic 4.33
Ranked 27/1178
She also took 4 junior college courses… 2 in progress
Son wait listed for pre nursing. How is the waitlist movement for pre nursing?
Unfortunately CSULB no longer publishes their waitlist data and they never broke out the data by major. All you can do is wait to hear and in the meantime get excited about the other acceptances.
Thanks much @Gumbymom for a quick response. You are a treasure here

My Child got rejected with UW 3.84 GPA, 9 APs and 5 Dual enrollments, applied to CS. This is getting ridiculous. Getting B in math and applying for CS is a sin in CA. So demotivating for kids. Should we appeal since now he is getting A’s in Math?
If you feel strongly about the decision, there is no harm in appealing. Based on 2022 data (no 2023 data), the average admitted CSU GPA for in-coming CS Freshman was 4.13 (non-local) or 4.08 (overall).
