Visiting CWRU this weekend and seeing that this is absolutely the school for my daughter. We won’t qualify for need-based aid and wondering what merit packages have looked like for the past couple of years. D has 4.5 weighted 4.0 unweighted 1460 sat and many extra-curricular activities. Does applying ED help w merit? Any suggestions for getting an offer we can work with — bringing COA to $55-60k per year?

I don’t know if applying ED helps with merit, but if I had to guess I would say no, because they know you want to come instead of using money to entice you to come.

My son is in his second year there and loves it. He also realized it was absolutely the school for him on a visit and it’s working out wonderfully. His GPA was similar to your daughter’s and his SAT was 1520. They gave him $27k per year and we did not qualify for need-based aid. You can also check last year’s acceptance thread, as people often post their stats and merit there. Good luck!

May I ask what your D25 likes about the school and why you think it’s a good fit? We are visiting next weekend and also think it could be a great fit but we are still doing our research.

It’s bit hard to say, but in no particular order:

– He’s doing engineering and he likes how hands-on it is vs theoretical, especially this year.

– The other students are helpful and people work together vs something more competitive feeling.

– He loves the thinkbox space. (Sears think[box] | Case Western Reserve University)

– He likes the support for co-ops, research, and study abroad. He’s applying to both a co-op and study abroad right now so he doesn’t have real experience with those, but he lives how so many people do them.

– He’s had lunch with profs and enjoys the camaraderie and support with the study groups.

– He’s made a group of about a dozen friends, which is not something that has come easily to him in the past, but he feels he’s found his people.

– He likes the high number of clubs and interest groups. (List of Groups)

– He’s happy about the overlap in classes that allows him to get both a mechanical eng and an aero eng degree in 4 years. His first love is aero, but mech seems more flexible.

– He’s considering and is happy about the option for a 5-year program with an MS instead of taking 2 more years. (Integrated BS/MS | Case School of Engineering | Case Western Reserve University)

Sorry I don’t know how to add the links as hyperlinks within the text.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful response! I’m particularly happy to see that he thinks he found his people. We are hoping for the same for D25. I’ve read that students there are generally friendly and collaborative which is what she’s looking for

You’re welcome. Let me know if you have specific questions and I can ask him what he thinks. Good luck with your search!

Case gives you the same Merit if you apply ED, EA, RA or even Waitlist.

Got it, thanks! That’s good to know especially since my daughter is interested in following in her brother’s footsteps in a few years.

Hello - son applied a few weeks ago. Common app shows it was downloaded, but he hasn’t gotten any kind of link to an applicant portal. Does Case send those out?

Now that you mention it, D25 also hasn’t received a link to her portal. She applied about a week ago I think

I emailed Case regarding access to the application portal. Their response is that “portal login details will be sent out in mid to late October”.

What does your daughter plan to study?

The year my son was accepted at Case there were many students on CC who received merit scholarships equal to 50% of tuition.

She’ll study biochem and wants to go to medical school.

We visited the ThinkBox and my daughter felt like should could have sat down with any of the kids there and have become friends. She was certain she could find her people at Case. Thanks for sharing your son’s experience.

My son is a Junior MechE major and Business minor at Case. He chose Case over higher ranked schools that accepted him for several reasons. FIrst, it fit is requirements for academic programs, distance from home, size and location. Second, the school promised lots of support for students in terms of tutors, etc. (mixed reviews there). Third, though he applied as a MechE because it was the most competitive program in which he was interested, he also was contemplating BioChem and BioMedE, and Case made double majors and minors relatively easy. Fourth, he liked the campus. Fifth, he liked the surrounding neighborhood. And sixth, he loved the Sears Thinkbox. He was very excited by the Thinkbox and saw himself spending weekends on mad scientist projects there. Did I mention the Thinkbox?

So far, so good. He is pretty happy there. Like any engineering program, the classes are demanding, but the school is not a grind like some schools (look’n at you, CMU). He has had a couple classes where he thought the teachers weren’t great, but you will see that at any R1 university where the professors would rather be working on their research than teaching undergrads.

The major downside at Case has been the dorms. My son’s freshman and sophomore dorms look like they were built in the 1960s and no money has been put into them since. The good news is that new dorms are under construction and should be complete soon.

I agree about the freshman dorms. My son was pretty unconcerned about things like living in an older building, but I was not a fan. This year as a sophomore he’s in a brand new building.

I didn’t get in for Fall 2024, so I did the 12-month reapplication for Spring 2025 admission, does anyone know when those decisions come out?
