Play stupid games, win stupid prizes…
This deferral was extremely disappointing and we were originally focused on frustrations regarding yield protection as discussed above, but after some time, my son is feeling re-inspired. It is one of his top schools (maybe in fact first choice though he doesn’t like to say stuff like that out loud), above schools that are more statistically competitive.
The three questions he needs to answer are all great opportunities to say things he wasn’t able to make clear on the original application. He can now expand on his extra-curriculars, academic acheivements and write a heartfelt “why case western essay”. TBH, I was a little annoyed at them as a mom (why wouldn’t you jump quickly at the opportunity to take my brilliant son away from me for 4 years!?!) but that annoyance is not at all helpful to help support him in making a compelling argument for getting accepted to this magnificent school (alma maters to both my parents!)
We’re not doing ED2, so he’s got until Jan 22nd (time to get back to work!)
For anyone reading this in future years, my dc was admitted EA and did show a lot of demonstrated interest. We were fortunate to be able to visit, and my dc wrote a letter to the AO telling him how much she enjoyed the visit with specific references to why it would be a good fit. So in essence, it was a sort of mini “why case” letter. It was not long at all. Of course none of us will know the extent to which that helped, but it clearly didn’t hurt. Case remains a top contender for dc
For future readers: Demonstrated interest, we visited campus (we live 2000+miles away, so this took effort) and took two tours (regular and engineering tour) and had a great one on one with one of the tour guides for 30+ minutes (hiding out during a rain storm), went to session with AO offered at his HS & opened emails. High rigor, 42K/yr merit.
To add on, we also had a great one on one with the tour guide and I’ve wondered if that’s a sort of quasi interview since they do individual tours. Dc also attended high school visit by AO and opened all emails. $31,500 merit
Sounds like your kid is a great candidate - I hope you get better news in RD. (We got around school firewall issue by opening a gmail account for just college applications)
Since they defer a lot of high stat kids to ED2, is it better to apply RD if you dont want to commit to ED2? Seems like they try to nudge kids into ED2.
D26 may be interested in CWR but we’re not going to commit to CWR ED or ED2.
Wondering if she should just avoid EA next year and apply RD.
While many get deferred in EA, many also get accepted. Also, I’ve read that many who get deferred in EA get accepted in the RD round (and deferrals have an opportunity to write a “why case” essay). So I still think there’s a benefit to applying in EA and no downside
Thanks. Based on some of the comments, I wasnt sure if they held it against you if you were deferred but didnt apply ED 2.
We’re probably going to visit one of the open house days but she has other schools that she’d prefer (as of now).
Must deferred students always write a letter of interest, if they want to RD?
Sorry I don’t know. Maybe someone else does?
I don’t think it’s required to stay in application. However, when my son was deferred last year, his school counselor just sent the letter automatically for him. He did get accepted later in RD.
My son was deferred and he has until Jan 22nd to complete the following form with 3 “optional” spaces to add information.
Awesome!!! My older son is at GT and is a Junior… loving it… straight A’s and lots of volunteer / research / etc. to build up on hands learning. Both are amazing schools!
My son was deferred and eventually admitted under RD a couple of years ago. He only answered the third question, which is essentially why Case.
My DS was admitted EA this cycle for engineering, received 33k a year in merit. Not eligible for FA. 1580 SAT/4.5 weighted GPA. Strong ECs but no national awards, published research, etc. He demonstrated little interest (we were unable to visit) - one virtual engineering info session, met with AO when he came to his HS and sent a follow-up email. All this to say they don’t defer all high stats kids by a matter of practice or require tons of DI. Good luck to all!
May I ask which state?
My kid was deferred with same SAT, a ton of 5s on APs, and a 4.8 GPA. I suspect the state of residence also plays a role. They might have stats on who eventually matriculates.
Good to know. How many words do they expect in this third question essay?
Mine wrote a standard “why me” essay. I don’t think it was more than 350 words.
We live in NJ. Being outside of the midwest may have helped? CWRU is not a popular choice at our large public HS.
