Looks like a parent’s dream of continuing Catholic education for son is gone thanks to the deferral…Soo disappointed in CU! When my son with HIGH stats was deferred and given the lame explanation of “we weren’t convinced of your true interest” (even though he visited twice and was first on the list for interview/discussion when the admission’s rep came to his Catholic HS) he was crushed and disgusted by what he felt was unethical/unfair treatment. We scrambled and had to apply to several state schools that are ranked MUCH higher than CU. He was welcomed with OPEN ARMS and merit money/honors to all of them… more importantly his faith in humanity to give an honest response to honest effort was restored. Shame on you CU!

I got deffered as well, I even emailed them what’s the next step. OMG! I went to the cardinalstation there was no links. I’m stressing out, I’m afraid I didn’t get in
HELP!!!

My son was a CUA EA candidate with high stats who was deferred to RD. Since his deferral he has kept the admission staff apprised of what he’s been up to during his senior year, new accomplishments since applying and visited during a recent open house. Use the time to sell yourself and good luck!

My D was a high stats engineering deferral in the EA round. Since she did not contact the admissions office with updates or to plead her case after receiving the deferral, we were all expecting that she would be receiving a rejection letter in the mail this month. Well, she got her letter today and it was an acceptance! She was also informed that she is being considered for an Archdiocesan Scholarship. My D, H, and I were shocked to say the least. FWIW, CUA was one of her favorite schools after visiting last summer and I did encourage her to contact her admissions counselor after her deferral to be sure that they knew this. D, however, felt that there was nothing else to say and to let the chips fall where they may. I guess you just never know what’s gng to happen with college admissions!

GraniteStateMom-- this is great news for your daughter! Do you recall I had a high stats daughter who applied for engineering and also was deferred? She didn’t a letter, so perhaps she will be be sadly rejected in the end, but I am really happy for you and your daughter and glad CUA recognized her ability. Crazy isn’t it? And congrats on the scholarship possibility!

My daughter did send an additional email; her guidance counselor contacted them and sent mid-year grades. I hope she gets accepted, but who knows?

We still have several others pending.

Just checked my D’s Cardinal Station, after seeing Granite State Mom’s post, and my D was accepted, with a notification about the honors program. Now THAT’s more like it! That’s all it says though, so I assume she will get mail soon. After the shock and disappointment of her EA deferral, I am so happy the news was good for her.

MomSix - Of course I remember! So glad that your D got good news! My D just heard about the honors program today. Hopefully your D will get the mail soon - I would bet that she is being considered for a scholarship too. Congrats to your daughter on her acceptance!

My D got two large white envelopes in the mail yesterday: One was for the Honors Program and one was the regular acceptance. Nothing about scholarships. Her CR and Math SAT scores do not reach the 1750 level CUA’s web site lists for the Archdiocesan scholarship (darn that CR!!) but we are hoping she is eligible for some kind of merit scholarship. I’ll be rooting for your daughter! What a happy ending after the initial deferrals!

The regular decisions and scholarship notifications seem to be out now, so if you don’t mind posting, how high a merit scholarship did you, or your child, get offered at CUA? I’ve seen the 14K figure a few times, but I’d like to know how high they go. There don’t seem to be any guidelines posted on the CUA website.

My Son got his scholarship letter today. He got $15,000 merit plus $3,000 Parish Scholarship.
We are happy with the money but it doesn’t seem like his Business/Finance or Economics major is big at this school.

Thank you, Dee0747. Mine got 16 + 3 parish, for engineering. She was deferred EA with high stats (valedictorian, 3.84 gpa but short of the Archdiocesan SAT cutoff for CR/Math) so we were very happy she was accepted by RD, and of course, happy to get a merit offer. I was just curious how this merit scholarship compared but it seems to be in line with what others got at CUA.

Hi, MomSix-- I received the same scholarship as your daughter. 16K + 3K parish for political science.

My child is currently a freshman at CUA and, regarding merit scholarships, he received 17k last year. He is also in the Honors Program and I would highly recommend it. Honors students have their own dorm and he has benefited from being with students who possess similar study habits. By the way, he loves CUA. He was accepted to several universities in the DC area and chose CUA because it just felt right to him and has not regretted the decision at all. If you are able, do attend Odyssey Day. It gives you a real feel for the student life there and all that is offered. As a current CUA parent, I would be happy to answer any questions anyone might have.

Thank you for the offer of insight as a freshman parent. My son is a hs senior and on his overnight (Columbus Day/Oct) with a freshman, he said he was concerned that quite a few students went home on the weekends. This was a long weekend. We are too far for him to go home and that wasn’t the experience he was hoping for. Is that the case? Thanks.

Last year, Columbus Day weekend was also family weekend so many students whose parents weren’t able to attend did go home but the vast majority stayed at school. Most students reside on campus so he will not find the campus empty on weekends. There are students from all over the country.

Thank you - very helpful.

D received her acceptance and a notification that she was being considered for the Archdiocesan Scholarship. Two days later she received the Financial Aid Scholarship notification with a CUA scholarship of $15k. Does that mean she is no longer being considered for the Archdiocesan Scholarship?

Thanks

Dad - I doubt that’s it. All the letters went out around the same time so they couldn’t possibly have decided yet. I’m guessing they award merit scholarships to everyone eligible; if she does not receive the Archdiocesan scholarship, she would get the 15K.

By the way, I have found admissions helpful and open with this kind of question (not all questions though!); I’m sure they would tell you, or your daughter, what the situation is re: the scholarship.

Congratulations! I wish her luck.

Dad - the same happened to my daughter. We are hoping that the amount specified in the letter will be the default if she does not receive the archdiocesan scholarship.

I would like to hear from someone who has graduated from CUA about their expereince, likes and dislikes. Dorm recomendations for men and the campus saftey and security.
