Congrats on W&M! You never know what will happen with holistic admissions. My D was accepted to Williams and denied at Wesleyan a few years ago. She didn’t apply to the others you mentioned. Good luck!
This site provides a selectivity ranking, which can be used to estimate relative difficulty of admission:
You will see that Swarthmore places most highly (at 18th nationally) from your daughter’s group, which may be propitious with respect to her remaining applications. However, due to the site’s methods, Williams was not included.
If she ends up choosing William and Mary have her look into Orchesis, WM’s modern dance company. My son is a freshman and dancing with them this year. He is really enjoying it and is heavily into the student-run dance organizations as well.
Franklin & Marshall released RD decisions this evening. DD was accepted with the highest amount of merit scholarship.
So far:
Reaches
Swarthmore - deferred ED1
Matches:
William & Mary - Received cypher postcard with “likely” note
Franklin & Marshall - Accepted
Likelies:
Muhlenburg - Accepted
U Maryland - [College Park/Smith School] - Accepted
James Madison University - Accepted
U of New Hampshire - Accepted
Top choice is probably W&M right now, with UMD a close second. Certainly has cut the sting of the Swarthmore deferral to know that she is wanted elsewhere.
Not the only thing that matters, but they are experts on who thrives at their college. So when they really want you, that is definitely worth considering!
Congrats on the likely postcard from W&M. I am glad they do this. My son was rejected from Williams and got a postcard from W&M too. He was afraid he would be rejected everywhere despite great stats so this made him feel better. I hope your daughter gets into Swarthmore!
If it’s any consolation, several years ago my D was denied at Bowdoin and Wesleyan and accepted at Williams and Middlebury. There have been many similar experiences posted on CC (which you’ve probably seen). Good luck to your son and to @EmergencyHandle’s daughter.
Couple more came in: Kenyon and Dickinson plus official W&M admit. All with honors designations, all but W&M with merit awards. I see these colleges know what they are doing. We know the rejections are around the corner but don’t care because we are excited by the current choices.

Besides Swat, who is left? I mean, you can only choose one - and there are awesome choices to pick from already.
Your student designed a very balanced and thorough list.
It’s ok for someone to be rejected. Personally, I hoped both mine were somewhere and they both were - multiple times.
Your student’s hard work has paid off with top schools and scholarships.
They just have to choose - which one “fits” them best academically, comfort and culture wise plus affordability. You have different types of schools on your list but all excellent schools.
Best of luck in what remains.
Congratulations to your D on all the acceptances so far! Among her acceptances, are there any favorites in the lead?
I’d say William and Mary is in the lead, but we have not visited there. We have a visit planned in two weeks. We are also heading out to visit Kenyon in April–her cousin attends there and convinced her to apply at Christmas dinner this year. Notice it was not on her original list! She is really holding out hope for Hamilton because she really enjoyed her visit there.
Left to hear from are Williams, Amherst, Tufts, Hamilton, Wesleyan, and Bates plus the final decision from Swarthmore. Bates will be released on Saturday.
Which major is your child applying? Your posts provide meaningful information for others.
With her stats, and full pay, she will get into Bates, I’m sure. If you had shown tremendous interest in Tufts (which of course would have best been done by a Tufts ED2 application), I think she would have been accepted there. It can also be done by telling them the lies that they deserve to hear, the “Really, I love you best, you are my dream school, and I’ll absolutely come here if you honor me with an acceptance, but for some ridiculous reason, just as ridiculous as your obsession with yield-protection, I cannot apply ED to you”, she might have gotten in there, but if the only interest she showed was a campus tour, and a couple of email exchanges with the admissions office, then I suspect that they’ll yield-protect and reject her. The others are a possibility, especially Wesleyan. It’s all gravy after the lovely acceptances she already has.
I think you will have a decent shot to get in Swat. I’ve heard (not admission officer so take it for what it’s worth) Swat does not offer a lot of def from ED apps. Unlike most other schools.
My child get accepted through the same path ED…Def…Accep couple yrs ago
Good Luck!
Sounds good to me, I have no interest in sending her to Tufts. She did none of those things, not even a visit. I’m guessing a rejection which I will not be sad about.
I think OP’s D has a good chance at Bates but it’s not a shoo-in. Bates takes a high percentage of their class ED1 and ED2. A few years ago my D (full pay, visited, toured and interviewed) and her BFF were both waitlisted at Bates and were accepted to Williams. My D also got into Middlebury and Colby while her friend got into Wesleyan and Wellesley. I don’t think any unhooked students can assume admission to selective schools these days.
Hamilton makes an especially good fit for college students.
In at Bates! Planning our visits to W&M and Kenyon. Will probably not make it up to Bates given those two are closer, but what a thrilling ride she’s having.
Honestly, I’m not sure what she put on her applications. I think Music, Philosophy, History, Economics, and Chemistry were her various choices.
It only matters if the college in question does direct admission to some of those majors because they are full (so those changing into them later need a high GPA or competitive admission to get into them) or have special requirements (e.g. music majors that require audition).
Check if any of the colleges admitted to have either characteristic for any major the student may be interested in.
