See - you were concerned - and for no reason. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

Congrats to your daughter!!!

One good thing about the Swat deferral - maybe she really looked much deeper into other options that she might not have had she gotten in intiially.

Has anything opened her eyes? Obviously UMD Smith is an entirely different set up (size, major, etc.) that the rest - well W&M has a great b school too. The others don’t.

This is all awesome news!!!

Celebrate - but then let us know - has the extra time to really check out all the wonderful programs - perhaps changed a perspective?

I think the Swarthmore deferral was awesome for her. She had months to look at other schools and deeply accept that she’d be happy anywhere. That’s a great life lesson. She is leaning to Swarthmore tonight because it’s really got everything she wants, but it’s hard to not consider Amherst. She really does want a smaller school so I think she will not choose UMD or W&M, though I think she’d do great at either. If nothing else, waiting for RD was a good exercise in patience and perspective, but I think she will end up at Swat.

I believe your daughter was accepted at Kenyon as well.

You’re correct! I’ll update the final list when we hear from Hamilton next week. She is still interested in Hamilton so we may need to do three admitted student days–Amherst, Swarthmore, and Hamilton.

Congratulations on Swat. That was her number one choice…but it’s nice she has all these terrific options!

If you would like to read brief, subjective comments on Amherst and Hamilton, see this post: NESCAC Spoken Here: - #5 by merc81.

Regarding your daughter’s overall outcome, it seems favorable that she has several excellent choices available to her at this point, rather than a straight ED admission.

Congrats on all the great acceptances! This was a blessing and a curse in my household last year with the decision being made at 10pm on 5/1. I think visiting each admitted student day was super helpful! As an aside my kid loves where the ended up and can’t believe it was such a hard decision now.

Once you daughter hears about Hamilton, feel free to message me with any questions! My daughter is a freshman, LOVES it, and I can’t say enough good things! Also, I’m sure my daughter would be happy to answer any questions! Good luck, it’s an exciting time!

Accepted at Hamilton. Final tally below. Planning on admitted student events at Swarthmore and Hamilton before making decision. She’s delighted. I could not be more pleased with the outcome.

Terrific! Congratulations. Looking forward to the final decision!

Committed to Swarthmore yesterday after attending their admitted students day. Deposit paid and she’s excited for the fall!

Really appreciate all the support over the past few months from everyone here. It was nice to have people to celebrate and commiserate with.

Congrats. We are headed to Swatstruck this week. Looking forward to it. I’m expecting /hoping the arboretum to be in full spring.

My D24 is also heading to Swatstruck this week! It’s reassuring to see a little Swat love here. So many internet denizens love to emphasize its “intensity,” but I’ve noticed that folks with actual experience at Swat have a much more nuanced view.

People compare it to Chicago, but for me that is not an insult! The right kids for Chicago tend to have a great time and end up thinking they went to the best possible college for them. And then they get a lifetime of people thinking they were an academic bada-- in college, even though they actually really enjoyed it.

I get the exact same impression from some Swatties. They feel like they found their ideal home, really enjoy it, and also get that special Swattie-cred.

And I could not even remotely sell any of this to my S24, but I am always rooting for kids to find that sort of relationship with a college.

We call it little Chicago. DH attended the UofC, as it was known then, in the late 80s/early 90, back in the days of Hanna Gray. Swarthmore strikes us very much like what Chicago was like then. The College was much smaller back then. It truly was where fun went to die but the students liked it that way. It was a self-selecting group that liked a challenge, I’m thinking Swarthmore will be much the same.

While I’m sure Swatties work very hard, the more I see firsthand accounts, the more I’m inclined to believe that Swat’s reputation is a bit overstated and reductive. I think/hope there’s a lot more to the Swat experience than just kids studying hard all the time. But I’ll leave D24 to decide whether it’s a good fit later this week at Swatstruck. She certainly likes to fill her plate to the brim with schoolwork and activities, but she’s also a normal kid who likes to socialize and have fun. I suspect most Swatties are similar.
