Thanks for the advice, everyone! I will hold out some hope for RD. I hope my mid-year report can help my app a bit since I have straight As, and my counselor is putting my class rank, top 10%, on it (I didn’t know we tracked that.)
Great! Any supportive and positive updates can be helpful.
Going to Washington today to take the ACT tomorrow. Took my final full length practice test yesterday and got 34 comp (36 E, 32 M, 35 R, 32 S.) Hoping to replicate this tomorrow
After the test, take time to enjoy yourself
Well, I have to say that was a disaster. I don’t know what happened. I couldn’t process anything properly. I’m feeling pretty horrible about the test. I’m expecting a 30.
You never know. Sometimes it seems hard because it was hard and since your results are compared to others, if they found it harder than you…
Did you send 4 scores directly to colleges?
Good luck!!
Only tufts and Yale (the only two schools that 100% accept the Feb test) But I’m gonna try to contact them to see if they can switch me to test optional.
You never know. Both are long shots anyway. Keep the scores in.
What’s your calendar to hear back?
Right now, between your 2 sure things, which seems more appealing?
I think I should have my scores in 2 weeks hopefully. I know both are very far reaches, but sending in a low score would make my chances go from very very slim to non existent. Out of UMN and UA I’d much rather go to UMN.
got it wrt UMN/UA.
The problem is that if you asked them specifically if they would consider your (late) scores and they said yes then you ask to be test optional, they will guess you did poorly and it will sink your application. Ofc you could have another reason, like, you didn’t make it from your town to (was it Washington ?) and couldn’t take the test but if they know you took the test and won’t send the score I don’t see how it won’t be a negative. Perhaps others here will have other opinions.
One strong point in your favor compzred to kids from Montreal, Ottawa or Toronto, is (assuming you’re, like, from Okanagan or Saskatchewan) that you’re from a town®ion they have few applicants from, in part because it’s remote and university is not taken for granted. However you need to have everything else and it’s a tall order, even for perfect candidates the odds are against getting in since 90-95% don’t despite being the top students around…
No, it was not a special order for Tufts and Yale; that’s why they were the only Unis I sent my score to beforehand. Their latest test date they accept is Feb. You’re right that there are few applicants from my area. There is one private school in my area that sends kids to top US unis, but that’s it. The last time someone at my school got into an Ivy was in 2008. This year, only five kids applied to any U.S. school, 3 of them being exchange students.
You’ve taken the test.
It will be what it will be. Some kids think they did great and don’t. Others think they didn’t and their score comes better.
Hopefully it will be great but if not, you’ve got great opportunities, including one at one of the top chem and Chem engineering schools in the country. So life will be fine.
In the meantime, relax and enjoy your time. Stressing won’t change the outcome.
This is what I was thinking. It is difficult to know how you did on SAT and ACT tests. Many years ago I was pleasantly surprised by at least two of my scores.
Also, Tufts and Yale are high reaches for pretty nearly everyone (for many students they are just out of reach).
@ravk06 you are already in at some very good universities. Anything else is just “extra”. You can only attend one university at a time (not including cross registration for schools that have this option). If you do not get into any additional schools then you will still have a great university to attend in September, and will still have a choice to be made between very good schools.
I think that you should relax, have some ice cream, watch the Super Bowl this evening, and just wait and see what happens at the schools where you are still waiting for a reply.
UMN is a great choice. So is UBC. So is UA. You already know you are headed to a very good university. Relax and in a couple of months you will know which one.
Does anyone think it’s worth taking the March SAT? My family thinks it is since a number of public schools award more scholarships for higher test scores. Not to mention if for whatever reason I wanted to transfer somewhere after first year, I would have a test score ready.
For example at ASU if I sent them a SAT of 1410 or higher they would give an additional 3000 a year compared to having no score.
Using practice tests, does a 1410+ sound reachable? If so the ROI would be worth it. If not, depends on how far from the “bar” you are.
Are you interested in ASU ?
Are you sure they’d take a later one ?
U of A doesn’t use the test at all as an example.
Don’t talk about transferring. When you go, go. Live. Take part. Do well. If you have one foot out the door, you’ll be miserable. And not do well. And many schools don’t reward transfers financially.
You are clearly seeking a big name or us News rank yet you’re already in at one of the top schools in the country for your interest. And noted you’d pick it over Arizona so would you pick ASU over it ?
You don’t have your ACT back yet. It may be great. You don’t know.
Are you close to a 1400 on the SAT ? Are you going to study ? Is taking now going to change your decision ?
You are obsessed it seems and I fear burnout.
It’s up to you of course but I wouldn’t push my kids to take again.
Good luck whatever you decide.
I think “obsessed” is unwarranted (and that is my opinion- not open for debate) . Is there a reason you are now you are needing to look for potentially a bit more aid? $3k/year more, potentially, is nice, but it isn’t a huge amount in the grand scheme of things in college admissions. It will be stressful to prep for a late SAT and complete more apps. It would first be important to confirm that they will take a late score, but yes, if you then apply, you would want to send the score. If you are content with the admissions you currently have, and are waiting for more (and for your ACT score) and there is no other compelling reason that ASU is on your radar is for the potential for the 3K more/yr, I don’t know that I’d see that as a strong enough reason to take another test. Hope that helps!
The reason I say this is since a 1400 is absolutely achievable. The only issue is I get very bad test anxiety and have underperformed on the tests I’ve taken. I believe if I took the SAT tomorrow I would get at least a 1450. On my ACT practice tests I’ve taken recently I was consistently scoring 33-34. I think I could achieve it with very minimal study.
