Well, I could research about Brown- I’m pretty good with that. Most of my other applications are done, so I’m focusing on my reach schools now. What did your son major in at Brown? If you don’t mind me asking
He was an applied math major and focused on entrepreneurship.
Happy to try and help.
Do Canadian hs counselors send a school profile for applicants? If so, AOs will see that your school doesn’t offer these things. In my opinion, you will not be penalized for lack of coursework that simply isn’t available at your high school.
No way for us to guess this! But the folks with experience with Brown and the application process are the best to give an opinion about this.
Yes, profiles are sent. I believe he noted that we don’t offer those courses. What I’m saying is I’m sure AOs would choose someone who has those courses over me if our GPAs were the same as well as ECs.
Another option is a bachelor’s degree in Canada and a master’s or other graduate degree in the US. I know several people who did this.
Regardless I think that two or three months from now you are going to have quite a few good options to choose from.
You’re right. There will hopefully be many options. Hoping for BC the most still
What were his stats? I’m sure they were much better than mine.
Didn’t you apply to the Hotel management school? It’s very very niche and you don’t have work experience in that area AFAIK so don’t infer anything from it.
Now, odds are you won’t get into any Ivy but yeah, when 95%+are rejected, that’s the rule to remember.
If you like Brown, apply to Brown and keep your fingers crossed. Look and see if there’s a program similar to BFS there thst you could mention in your statement of interest.
@tsbna44: it’s a Canadian school so rigor is baked in - at the upper secondary level there are no honors or AP because there’s no need.
And so schools will know.
An Ivy, RD and TO will be tough.
As I noted if he’s got an already desirable and affordable place, he can apply away.
Yes, that is correct. I did apply to the Hotel School. Should I mention BFS in my essays for UPenn? If so, which prompt would I write about it in?
1.Wharton prepares its students to make an impact by applying business methods and economic theory to real-world problems, including economic, political, and social issues. Please reflect on a current issue of importance to you and share how you hope a Wharton education would help you to explore it.
2.How will you explore community at Penn? Consider how Penn will help shape your perspective, and how your experiences and perspective will help shape Penn.
I think maybe the second one. I’m not sure, though.
To be honest my kids stats are irrelevant to your likely outcomes.
I typically find those that frequently post about their own kids experiences to be more about self aggrandizement than providing applicable insight. Particularly when those experiences are a full admissions cycle in the past.
I am happy to try and help you if you are interested and trying to identify “Why Brown” makes sense for you. Please use DM.
It would be great if you could help with that.
Yes, the second one.
IF you decide to apply to Penn.
You have roughly 10 days and a good application takes time so start prioritizing - BC since it’s your ED2, one Ivy+ or 2, Colgate, Holy Cross, ASU Barrett /UA Honors, and (? Perhaps?) one more would likely be the most you can handle well so choose wisely.
(Remembering that anything Ivy+ is highly unlikely so don’t solely focus on that.)
I do not think it is a given that AO’s will make allowances for OP’s school and that rigour will be assumed. I know many Ivy admits from Canada, primarily from Ontario and Quebec, and they were all were ranked at the very top of their class and had objective external evidence of achievement, i.e. near-perfect IB scores, AP courses PLUS research with a university lab ((dual enrolment isn’t possible in most places in Canada), Math Olympiad medals or Waterloo math competition accomplishments, publications, debate medals at World tournaments, Intel Science Fair recognition, OR they were excellent students with provincial to national-level athletic achievement that allowed them to be recruited. Even people WITH these achievements, if they get into one Ivy, are rejected at others because it is a brutal numbers game. Not trying to negative, just realistic: without something from the above list, you are going to need a very compelling story to grab AO attention and push you to the top of the pile.
Admission to the Ivy League schools is not predictable…regardless of stats, achievements, etc.
But this is a strong student…and has a chance like anyone else to be in the below 10% of admissions at these colleges.
I think at Ivy and most but not all top schools, TO is a flag. In part for reasons you mention. The CDS stats back it up.
I’m well aware my chances are slim to none, but I still want to give it a shot.
Just about everyone’s chances at these highly competitive schools is slim to none…go for it…why not?
I know it can be a red flag, but it’s my only option. The only Ivy who will accept my Feb ACT would be Yale. Tufts, U of Chicago, many LACs, and a few others will also take it.
And with UBC as desired by you and if you do the AZ schools, you’ve earned the right. GO FOR IT!!
I suggest you do them first - the Az schools. They are quick and easy and will build momentum. Then you can see the Honors essays. It’s nice to get quick wins !!
Good luck in your pursuit.
