  • White Hispanic (I look white, Mexican last name if it matters)
  • Upper Mid Class

  • APUSH (taking rn, predicted 5)
  • AP Physics (taking rn, predicted 5)
  • AP Lit (taking next year)
  • AP Bio (taking next year)
  • AP Calc AB (taking next year)

  • That one highest regents award i forget the name
  • Going to get ap scholar with distinction
  • Will find some more awards soon enough

Extracurriculars

  • Biomedical Club (Will most likely have a leadership position next year
  • Campus Ministry (no “leader” but i do lead many stuff)
  • Student Council, senior rep
  • Key Club
  • Camden Retreat Project (we go to Camden NJ and do stuff)

  • Peer Tutor in Living Environment, Intro to Bio, and Time Management
  • Bakery Worker
  • Resturant Busser
  • Kids Tennis Instructor
  • Babysitter
  • AED/CPR/Stop the Bleed Certified
  • We are starting a HOSA chapter at my school that will be involved in projects contests etc. Im in the founding group but its still very much in its baby stages

NOTE ON ECs: I know its kinda mid. Im working on it. Im a very anxious high schooler with multiple jobs who doesn’t have a lot of time, support, or large amounts of money for passion projects. I made it to the final round of admissions at HOPP but was ultimately rejected. EC suggestions for that spike would be cool.

Essays/LORs/Other

  • First Recommendation from my biomed teacher, very very strong
  • Second Rec im debating between my physics teacher, school president, and the doctor I shadow- can i do that??
  • I do write pretty good essays

Other information about me cuz:

  • I can speak spanish decently well
  • My whole HS personality is basically biomed plus service, maybe even more service. I have 200+ service hours from going to soup kitchens, tutoring kids, raising money, midnight runs, holding community events, rare disease day etc etc. I do genuinely love it. Unfortunately i was told that this is a very hard thing to represent in admissions, is that true?
  • I really really struggled with pandemic induced anxiety+depression for most of my HS school years and I had a low 90s GPA until junior year where i finally got my shi together and now i get regular 99s. How would this affect admissions?

Cost Constraints / Budget

  • 65k per year unless its a really good school
  • I am planning on picking a school to ED to
  • Being that we have a family income of about 150-200k i probably wont get aid. My dad doesn’t have a college degree and my mom only has a bachelors if that helps.
  • Not legacy anywhere except for Scranton (mom) which I unfortunately do not want to go to

Schools
Not good at chancing myself so ill just put them on a list here:

  • SUNY Stony Brook
  • SUNY Bingham
  • University of Pittsburgh
  • University of Florida
  • USC
  • Providence
  • University of Michigan (reach, but i do have family here in premed)
  • Emory (reaaaachhhhh)
  • Cornell (rrrreeeeeaaaacccchhhhh + wont even apply unless i can bump SAT above a 1550)

If anyone has any other school suggestions lmk. I took a lot of suggestions from a previous post which i dug into them and really liked the ones currently listed. Looking specifically for safties and maybe a not-impossible reach since my list is mostly matches.

I agree it’s a reach, but some of the schools at Cornell are test blind, meaning they don’t consider your test scores. You could apply to College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) and study Biological Science or any number of majors.

If you are thinking nursing, you might look at nursing schools. If DR, then another major.

If your budget is $65K, then your budget is $65K. I don’t get - unless it’s a good school. What does that even mean? All schools are good and if you’re going for nursing or med, the “rep” matters less - what you do and your MCAT matters!!

Stony Brook - safety

Bing - safety

Pittsburgh - if you apply b4 Dec 1 safety

Florida - Match

USC - reach

Providence - safety

Michigan - reach - your family won’t help but it’s nice they are around. hmmmm - but it’s out of your budget - it’s $76K and $80K for this year (1st two and last two years)

Emory - and you have two cracks if you’re open to Oxford - reach but not impossible.

Cornell - reach - and yes you should apply if you want to go there. But no there is no need aid - so you’re looking at by the time you go, $375K unless you have need aid vs. your budget of $260K.

It’s a fine list - but I might swap an Emory for a Case Western (better chance of merit) or Rochester.

And a Michigan for - other big 10 type schools - an IU, Ohio State, Illinios. Or a UNC for reach.

No point in applying to schools outside of budget.

Good luck.

Are you planning to apply as a nursing major?

Parents said that i get into duke, they will pay whatever it takes. Other then that im at 65k. They have a really weird obsession with duke. They think i stand a chance at getting a scholarship and its really getting on my nerves. Not putting it on the list out of spite, plus i already know the answer to getting in.

If I can do that then yes.

Thanks very helpful! I mean it lol, and i recognize you from my previous posts. You’ve definitely been a good influence.

What do you mean by two cracks though? Sorry not the best with sarcasm/tone online. Lol

hmmm - Duke isn’t on your list - and it will be extremely hard at Duke for you to get a scholarship, let alone get in - but no pain, no gain.

If you get a scholarship there, they are very generous - and it won’t be $85K.

btw - Duke is $89K next year - just tuition, room and board - not extras.

Maybe this is what they’re hoping for.

Case Western looks great, idk why i never heard of it before thanks!

I am NOT getting into duke:skull::sob:. Unless i can miracle get a 1570 sat. And they make me leader of hosa. And i get to speak at that conference. And i need to do the hundreds of things on my to do list. So not impossible but i need a lot of things to go right in my life. And most things do not go right in my life.

Sorry - two cracks.

Emory has the main campus - in Atlanta.

They have a 2nd campus in Oxford - just past Conyers - if you take I20 East of downtown Atlanta about 35 or 40 miles. A tiny town.

Oxford is their two year school - it’s very small - and then the students attend Emory the final two years. The students are just as talented academically as the Emory students but Emory has set up this nice business - to expand itself.

So one can go to Emory 2 years and Oxford two years Or Emory four years.

Applying to Oxford too enhances your chances.

For pre med (not nursing), the isolation might be better.

When you apply to Oxford, you in essence have a 2nd chance at admission to Emory. It’s not for everyone - mine applied to Emory but not Oxford. Some apply to both.

Never say never -you don’t know.

It’s unlikely, especially unhooked (athlete, certain race, etc) but that’s why you apply to a varied list of schools.

In the likely case they say know, who cares - you have others that will love to have you.

But if you don’t get in (assuming you want to go) because you don’t apply - shame on you. You’re certainly worthy of applying.

I knew about their oxford thing but I wasnt sure exactly how it worked, this makes sense. How are the opportunities there in preparing you for medicine (both nursing and dr) if you know about that?

Thanks. I just dont want to get my hopes up and disappointment myself. I know technically everyone stands a chance and I do have a decent list of achievements, but i hate the feeling of failing myself. I love learning, college was always like disneyland for me growing up and elite schools were hyped up to me as the ultimate place to be. Theres a certain sadness in knowing you stand a very little chance of doing the thing you always wanted to do because of bad life choices. Or maybe even thats just another excuse for dodging the fact that im just simply not special. Hell id even go as far as to say I don’t deserve to be the person I thought I would be. The fact that im on online forums yapping about my future when I have a roof over my head and food on the table should show that.

To quote a bojack horseman scene here, im generally not a very happy person but when people ask how I am, I always say good, because I don’t have a valid reason to be doing not good.

SB - match
Binghamton- match
Pitt- match

UF- reach
U.S.C.- reach
Providence- safety
Michigan- reach
Emory- reach (I agree about applying to Oxford)
Cornell- reach

I would choose 1 more safety and you are good to go! Take a look at Delaware.

Thanks twogirls! Youve been really helpful on all my posts, i remember specifically Pitt came from you. Hope your kids and fam are all doing great.

Ive been to delaware before. My cousin graduated from there a looonnngg time ago, I was probably 7. I thought it was beautiful but I also thought all colleges were beautiful (see above reply to someone else). Looking on it now, I don’t click with it but I’ll definitely look again because i do need more safties and delaware isnt bad at all.

You can only go to one school - so if you want to swing for the fences, do so.

Some kids apply to 20 and get into 20. They can’t handle rejection.

Others apply to 20 - and only get into 1-2 - and they’re ok.

Your most important school is the safety school - you know you’ll get in, you’d love to go and you can afford.

Anything else is gravy - take your shots - if they say no, who cares - you have the safety!!

I can’t answer on Oxford vs. Emory. Reach out to the pre med advisor to ask.

I’m not a pre med nursing person - but I don’t think they are one in the same. Nursing is a different track.

Nursing is a different track than premed. That is why I asked what your major is.
