Essays/LORs/Other

Schools (early applications)

  • ED Swarthmore (yes, I know I have an extremely low chance of getting in, but I’m taking a chance)
  • Connecticut College
  • Sewanee - The University of the South
  • Brandeis University
  • Oberlin College
  • Macalester College
  • DePauw University
  • Colorado College
  • Hobart and William Smith Colleges
  • Gettysburg College

Should I ED somewhere else? Swarthmore has been my dream school for a while, and I know a lot of Pakistani students (personally) studying there.
I was thinking of applying ED to Haverford instead of Swarthmore, but I’m thinking of ED2 there.

Would colleges think I’m dumb since I only improved by 10 points in one year? I have a distinction in mathematics for a perfect 100/100 score in 11th grade, but I don’t know what happened on the SAT that I ended up losing 10 points on the math section. I want to give it again, but my midterms are in the way.

These are all need aware schools. I don’t think any will admit a student requiring that much aid. Now, they may admit you but say you need to pay more. Some of these don’t meet need, even for US Students.

This is why you see a school like Hobart admit - near all domestic, but well less than half internationally - they cherry pick.

I might include the meets need schools on my list - some need blind and others need aware.

I posted this the other day - it may help you - best of luck in your pursuit:

No knowledge on China but to answer your questions if the US is in play and yes, I would think you’d want a test score to be competitive. And some may require it.

There are colleges that are need-blind and meet need. So they won’t factor in your need to their decision making and if they admit you, they will meet your need. Whether or not they would calculate your need to 1500 Euros or less is the question.

• Amherst College
• Bowdoin College
• Brown
• Dartmouth College
• Harvard University
• The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
• Princeton University
• Washington & Lee
• Yale University

Notre Dame is need blind for admissions but reading their policy, it doesn’t appear they assure to meet need if admit an international - at least as I read their policy. I could be wrong.

W&L meets need as noted but that doesn’t mean 1500 Euros. Another option they give you is they have something called the Johnson Scholarship, which is a full ride + and is given to international students - so that’s a way to hedge. About 10% of the class is given the scholarship.

There are other schools - @MYOS1634 mentioned some. Others like

• Bates
• College of the Holy Cross
• Colgate
• Davidson
• Denison
• Franklin & Marshall
• Stanford
• Tufts

And maybe more meet need if they admit you, but they may not admit you because you need so much aid - meaning they are need aware. They have limited funds and likely want to spread them amongst people that can pay more.

I’m linking a 3rd party list below. These 8 I just listed meet need (I checked) but you can check the rest. I did check some - like U Miami and Connecticut College and they didn’t say they meet need. But it gives you a start - you’d have to research each (beyond those I listed, which I already have).

But remember, just because they meet need and you have a desired price, doesn’t mean, even if admitted, they will agree with your need amount.

Good luck.

Colleges Offering Financial Aid for International Students

Congratulations on your achievements. I can’t chance you, but all US colleges should be considered reaches as it sounds like you need substantial financial aid to attend.

Some of the schools on your list (Sewanee, Hobart & William Smith, Gettysburg) don’t meet full need for all students, so you may be accepted, but they may not be affordable.

Do you have at least one affordable option with a high admission rate in your country, or elsewhere?

What does this mean? Is $10K what your family can contribute per year? Will you qualify for need based aid? Swat’s NPC isn’t set up for international students, but did you run that anyway? What was the result?

Conn college does meet full need for all admitted students, including internationals, but is need aware. International Student Costs · Connecticut College

These 10 & 20 point differences are statistically insignificant. SAT composite scores of 1440, 1450, & 1460 are pretty much the same.

As an international applicant, you need to target at least 20 U.S. schools if looking to study in the U.S. Of these, you need to target need-blind schools if you have limited funds. Target need-aware only if you can win any external grants & scholarships. If you target any 1500+ SAT schools, ones where the mid-50% SAT range starts at 1500, then you should apply test-optional, if it’s an available option.

Thank you for your detailed response!

Yes, I know all of these are need-aware schools since all of the need-blind schools only offer ED or RD. I’ll apply to some when I get to know my early decisions. Also, to be frank, I don’t think my application is that good for top schools (which are usually need-blind or give the most aid).

I was thinking of applying ED to W&L, but I’ll apply RD. I’ll keep Amherst and Bowdoin in mind!

The colleges that I’m applying early to are ones that I know students have gotten close to full rides at (from Pakistan or other countries). I don’t really have a concrete list of schools I’m applying RD to since my early application decisions could change that list.

Thanks again for the list of colleges!

Yes, I have some universities in Pakistan and a few in Europe. I’m mainly targeting the US since I think it offers the best programs for linguistics.

By my EFC, I meant my family could contribute 10k toward the total COA (tuition + housing/meals). Other misc. things such as health insurance, visa costs, and personal expenses aren’t included in that. I could contribute another 5-7k for that.

Yes!! One of my close friends was accepted to Conn College with an EFC of 4k. (he was on a gap year)

Yes, my SAT scores haunt me when I’m sleeping at night.

These are the colleges I’m applying early to; I’ll apply to some more in RD.

For test-optional, I heard that for students who do national curricula or curricula AOs aren’t aware of, their scores matter a lot since they provide AOs with a sense of where the student stands. If I apply test-optional to Swarthmore, would I get rejected straight away?

I wouldn’t be able to provide an answer. About 40% of enrolled students submitted SAT scores & 15% submitted ACT scores. Plenty of students that applied test-optional were admitted.

Swarthmore College 2026 Fact Sheet

What we don’t know is whether plenty of international students with high need were accepted without test scores. I expect not.

OP, you should reach out to your Swat AO and ask them for guidance on whether to submit or not. I would do the same at any school where your score is below the mid 50% range. Some AOs will give guidance, some won’t.

Very unlikely.

Ohh, you can do that?

I thought reaching out to AOs directly could negatively affect you, but I’ll email them!

Thank you!!

Disagree. OP needs to target schools that meet full need for internationals, regardless if they are need-blind or need-aware. There are need blind schools that don’t meet need.

Like almost all public schools.

There are external funding opportunities for college or university studies—whether domestically or abroad for Pakistani students.

That’s fine, but targeting need-aware schools that meet need if they admit you also makes sense. OP already gave example of friend at Conn College.

And some privates, like Georgetown.
