Chance me: Rural Texas student with big dreams [97.5 UW GPA, top 2% rank, 1490 SAT, Economics]

I saw some people online who got in with sats lower than mine. Another huge thing I forgot to mention is that my activities section was not focused around econ/business work (leadership,) but other things that I later realized were less what they wanted to see.

@UltraConstructor don’t second guess; those with lower SATs may have way more course rigor, come from uber elite competitive schools, might be NMSF, etc. You just don’t know.

Good news is, you got accepted to Liberal Arts and wanted to major in Econ anyway! Being in Austin, steps from the capital, sounds pretty amazing, for what you want to do-public policy.

THIS. So, congratulations!

With respect to economics, this analysis, which is based on faculty publishing, may help you evaluate your potential choices: https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.usecondept.html.

Interesting list. Good to see UT is still t30.

I just looked at my UT application, and my activities section lacked almost ALL of the strong business extracurricular information I listed. I submitted an appeal. I know you’ll just have to take my word for it, but my appeal is extremely strong and I think it will at least be considered.

So I guess I don’t understand. Do you want to study Economics-which you got accepted to at UT-or you’d rather have the ‘prestige’ associated with McCombs & Ross, which are business schools.

Didn’t you see a pdf of your application before you submitted to validate what was on there?

Please don’t pin your hopes on an appeal. Saying that from family experience, for a kid with excellent stats.

Half of the issue was that I didn’t expand on what my vague wording meant, which I didn’t want to do because I was afraid of bragging, and half of the issue was that I didn’t have any milestones to report yet. I submitted my application very early.

Honestly, the entire chat is a bit confusing to me.

You asked your chances for McCombs yet you had already had an answer from them.

And then you said: “I just looked at my UT application, and my activities section lacked almost ALL of the strong business extracurricular information I listed.”

And now you are justifying it and saying you had nothing to report which differs from that sentence which made it seem like - all you put in just disappeared.

Hmmmm - you can appeal - but nothing will change. Nothing can be that “changing” this year that his impact and tenure that wouldn’t have been listed before - at least as an in process.

Besides - you want to major in econ and finance is not even close.

Good luck - but it seems (to me) you’ve not been very forthright from the get go.

Oh, 100%. It’s just way better mentally for me to know that the person they rejected wasn’t really me, only who they saw through my lazy app.

Yeah, same with Michigan. The recruiting in Ross and McCombs is fantastic, and that safety + extra web of connection to internships and jobs is valuable enough for me to prefer studying finance at those schools.

You asked your chances for McCombs yet you had already had an answer from them.

I understand why this is weird obviously, but I really was just curious. It was really easy for me to type another school name in my chance list.

And now you are justifying it and saying you had nothing to report which differs from that sentence which made it seem like - all you put in just disappeared.

I guess I just didn’t want to say I was stupid. I put a small description of a “mentorship” but didn’t expand on the details. In addition, it’s now been long enough that I have a new mentorship opportunity and performance results to report from my last mentorship, both of which I see as strong validations of an otherwise weak and inconsistent ec.

I’m sorry if I was dishonest! I was only curious.
