Thank you! I added it to my list. Although I still have to get rid of more colleges on there, I researched UR more and it definitely seems like a college worth adding!
Not to add per se but since you are thereā¦if you have timeā¦.although it seems to fit regardless and is more likely than so many you looked at but still top notch. And has merit (meets need too if u have).
I totally agree about Georgetown and GPA/Class Rank. They are super focused on top 10%
Hey! I got into Yale (EPE) and your stats and ecs look amazing! It will all come down to essays. Please reach out if you need any help with the drafting process or editing!
You are a strong candidate for admission to Yale and to Dartmouth College.
Based on your activities and accomplishments, you need to focus on reach schools since you should do well in an environment of highly intelligent, motivated leaders. Donāt settle; donāt sell yourself short.
You are a leader and you are an effective communicator. These are outstanding qualities that should be attractive to schools like Yale University and Dartmouth College.
Beyond Yale & Dartmouth, you should consider:
Princeton, Harvard, Duke, Northwestern (great location & can triple major fairly easily/lots of small classes), Brown, U Chicago (however, not located in the safest area of Chicago), U Virginia, and UNC-Chapel Hill (has your major & offers chance of a full ride scholarship).
Beyond the ten universities listed above, consider investigating Claremont McKenna College (great programs, outstanding consortium membership, but too much drinking/partying for some), Georgetown (unfortunately, lots of rodents on campus), and Wash & Lee (for a full ride scholarship).
omg ty and congratulations
!!!
thank you!! Iām definitely looking at some of those other schools, especially UChicago/UVA/Brown etc. Our familyās thinking is that once I get into our state school as one of my EA colleges, which I toured/visited and really like (and Iām reasonably confident I can get into given that Iām an in-state student and our high school has a great history with it), I wonāt try for more safeties because I would really be happy even if I was just accepted there. We were essentially thinking of getting in there EA, then applying āup the ladderā to put it in my momās terms.
Is your state flagship Rutgers-NB ? If yes, then you really do not need any more safeties.
I am a huge fan of Big Ten Conference schools. The closer one looks, the better they look based upon the vast variety of choices with respect to activities and academic options. But, if you are willing to attend school in New Jersey, then Princeton may be the better option for you.
Of course, if you prefer to attend college/university tuition free, then you should be able to generate many options at lower ranked schools.
Also, in addition to your impressive list of accomplishments in writing, you are a leader and participant in moot court. Effective communications skills are coveted by all of the schools that I listed.
Bluntly speaking, if not offered admission to one or more of the schools that I listed, I would suggest a gap year rather than settling for a less demanding environment.
Yes, it is Rutgers NB lol. I donāt know how out-of-state kids think about it, but at my school and the rest of the state in general kind of look down on it, which I think is very unwarranted. Rutgers is a top public school and great for many different subjects; they also have a high success rate in terms of finding a job after graduation and location is good too. When I visited, their food was also AMAZING! Finally, the cost is really good for us as an in-state family. So as long as I get in there Iāll be happy; getting into some of the more competitive schools would be an awesome bonus.
Communication and leadership are, like you mentioned, some of my big points. Iām almost done with my first draft of the common app essay, which really focuses on that. However, as other users have discussed, my GPA is my weak point and Iām concerned that certain colleges wonāt be willing to overlook that Still deciding whether to apply to Yale SCEA, Dartmouth ED, or UPenn ED because I actually visited recently and they have a great creative writing recruitment program.
Never focus on weakness; always focus on strengths.
If you want Yale, then SCEA to Yale.
P.S. You can address a weakness, but make it brief. Be concise & let it go.
Yale is my #1 for sure; Iām still leaning towards going SCEA. Just thinking about the fact that there are always some applicants who are crazily accomplished and seem to have done everything and gotten a 4.0 GPA at the same time. Not sure if I should mention the extensive surgery/injury/recovery process during junior year in the Additional Info section? I donāt want to come across as making excuses for the lower grades!
Do not focus on any perceived weaknessāespecially given your strengths which make you an attractive candidate for the best schools in the country.
If the severe injury had a negative impact on your grades, then you can share that information in a brief statement. Do you really want an application reader to focus on your GPA in light of your superb qualifications as an effective communicator and as an effective leader ?
Play to your strengths.
P.S. As an indication of the quality of your accomplishments, I had to edit twice to arrive at the correct spelling of the word superbāan indication that I rarely get to use that word.
Got it, thank you so much!!!
Start thinking of yourself in terms of being an effective leader and an effective communicator.
I guess Iām confused.
Earlier, you said these schools will strain your family financially.
And you also say you want to go to law school - another $100K a year potentially.
Going to those schools doesnāt necessarily give you a bigger advantage than say going to Montclair State - and Iām not suggesting that - but Rutgers is very strong and will not strain your family and Iām assuming better help you to achieve your goals. And if not Rutgers, other fine schools will pay for someone like you. You could easily go $20-40K a year at great schools.
So look out 7 years - not four.
I think your rank - if not 10% - at a public high school will hurt you and your ethnicity (if you disclose it in essays or activities) can also hurt you as itās over represented at many top schools.
But in your case, Iād strongly look at budget - and many great schools will throw money at you vs. just a big name - because if you do end up in law school, how will you pay if youāve already over stretched them? And if you perform well in class and the LSAT, the where you go undergrad isnāt going to hold you back for a top law school - which I imagine is your goal.
Best of luck.
I should also mention I will be submitting a piano portfolio and creative writing portfolio for every school that allows either of them. For piano I think the pieces I chose are extremely unique and enjoyable; one of them is a highly romantic, elegiac piece while the other is a pretty crowd-pleasing jazz rag. As for creative writing, I will send in a mix of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and satire.
Yes, they will - again, however, my parents themselves have declared that if I am accepted into one of the more selective schools, 1) I am going; 2) they will pay for it (I almost have no say in this matter). Regarding graduation, I might work for a few years and then go to law school. Iām also looking at potential scholarships I might be able to get from UNC, UVA, etc.
As for my ranking, thereās nothing much I can do about that at this point other than to try my best to maintain all As for senior year. My ethnicity is disclosed in my activities, but in my essay it isnāt discussed in the way one might expect it to be, as racial identity is not the main focus by far. The initial feedback Iāve gotten from my essay is that itās extremely unique, insightful/profound, and adds several layers of meaning and depth (since my ethnicity is only the background of it) making it stand out from others who might have similar ideas. Iām also a strong writer, so Iām obviously trying to let that come across through my essay too. Maybe thatāll help? Thanks!
Bluntly speaking, I donāt understand or agree with this advice. So go big or go home, I guess? You advising that if OP isnāt admitted to one of the ten reach schools hand picked for them by an internet stranger, they should take a gap year? And then what? Reapply to the same set of schools next year and hope for a better result? Sorry, I donāt get it.
I think that you have the right attitude with ranking nothing can be done so do not dwell. I think you should do the same with GPA. Meaning they will look at it so no need to bring more attention to it. Focus on your strengths. My advice is to SCEA Yale if that is your dream school. As a parent of a Yale grad I can say it is a truly special place. If you would truly be happy at Rutgers than I think it is a good plan to focus on the real reaches making the essays sounds like you would be an amazing addition to their class. You should try for the Jefferson if you love UVA. Have you thought about applying to USSYP? How about the Bryan Cameron Impact scholarship?
Yes, I agree - like I mentioned earlier, I donāt think getting into one of these top schools is a prerequisite for success at all. While it would obviously be great to get into one, I think Iād rather go to Rutgers - which still gives a great education - and focus my efforts there than take a gap year. IMO what matters in the end isnāt where you got your degree; itās how you use it and what you spend your time doing there. If anything I would rather do well in Rutgers and take a shot as a transfer student. For me personally I just feel like a year spent in an environment with other students and many more opportunities available (e.g. research, internships) is more valuable than a year spent floating around on my own - again, this might just be a personal thing!
