Chance son for a bunch of reaches [NY, valedictorian, 1520]

I’ve always said there are like 30-40 T20 colleges, especially if you include LACs.

I probably should have mentioned med school is the goal in the original post. Thankfully financials are not an issue for our family. I appreciate the advice

And ranks by major vs overall school. Not to mention schools that use ther factors to rank - like outcomes.

Then they’re in good shape.

But it’s more important that you are happy because you will need to deliver in undergrad gpa wise but the where won’t matter. Look for a school with access to shadowing.

In other words going to the top isn’t great if not happy. So make sure you find where they feel most at home. And don’t forget at a tippy top - they are one of everyone vs standing out.

The hiccup you have maybe the 1520. Insanely great but not great for all on the list.

Good luck.

If med school is the ultimate goal SB is the best option by far. Zero debt, zero out of pocket and excellent opportunities for premed. Save the money for med school.

His hesitation for SB is the fact that it’s very local. He applied to SB as a safety and his main “need” from his college experience is to venture off from where we live which I completely understand and support

ok, that makes sense, he definitely has a chance to all of the schools on his list, hopefully he lands in the place that makes him happy!

Hope nova comes in them or apply to others where the stats get you in at 20k

But if you’re comfortable at $700-800k, then you’ve got GREAT options already.

And I think at least one more comes. But no one can know but I’d guess 1-3.

My daughter’s hs Val was similar academically with a 36 act and 0 for 16 in top 20.

That said your out of class background is stronger.

Curious why SB vs Bing and Buff given the desire to move ?

What do you mean by his out of class background is stronger?

I didn’t add to the original post but he applied EA to a few other sunys: bing, buffalo, and oneonta during the suny free week. He got into all of them but wouldn’t consider them over the other acceptances. He got money from all but nothing as substantial as a full ride

Bing gives him the ability to go away, have a different environment and have excellent premed education. Why is it off the table?

He has great acceptances. Anything more is icing on the cake.

It’s hard being the val- everybody asks where you are going to college and you are in the spotlight a lot. That’s hard for a 17-18 year old, regardless of how mature they appear.

Rest assured- he will succeed wherever he goes and it will be all about experiences, grades, internships, volunteering, research, prof relationships etc. That is what will matter.

He also doesn’t want to attend a university where majority of the students are local or from Long Island / his current high school. We recognize that this is quite a minor detail, but since money isn’t an issue we are able to look at factors like this. 86% of students at bing are from New York. He truly wants to go to a more diverse environment

When we visited Cornell my D said hello to 16 students from her HS, all within the first hour.

Extra curriculars, non academic

Very impressive

Wow! It’s been 2 years from our school since a kid has gone to Cornell

Our HS has sent a lot of kids to Cornell.

I’m a native New Yorker; I’m very familiar with the sentiment. You have Michigan; no need to justify your priorities.

We are very fortunate to have that as an option! No matter what happens

Yep. My guess…he gets into 2 highly selective schools and his only real problem is choosing between 2 awesome destinations.

I love the variety in his list of schools. Top tier performers like your son can thrive in just about any environment.

I hope you come back and update this thread down the road.
