Chelsea Clinton's Wedding

Brooklynborndad, thank you for the explanation! So in traditional Jewish law, Jewish status is embedded in the person’s mitochondrial DNA. Okay, that’s easy for me to remember!

If Mrs. Rodham is over 80, WOW! She looks fantastic. I’d die to look that great at that age!

Thanks for the explanation, Brooklynborndad. There used to be a Jewish guy at work to whom I was close enough to add all my stupid, raised-Protestant questions. He left a few years ago but I’m not close enough to the other Jewish folks at work to ask.

Happy anniversary to you, happy anniversary to you!

missypie, happy anniversary to you!!!

(Gardenias are lovely. I tried in vain to grow some in my garden. They just do not like it here!)

I think it’s a beautiful photo. And Hillary’s mom looks fantastic – I would never have guessed that she’s 90!

Beautiful photo. I’m not crazy about H’s dress either, but I don’t like fussy dresses. Ironically, that’s the style that looks best on me. I think H would have done better with a simpler, more classic dress. At the last wedding I attended the MOB wore a simple navy dress with just one strap, and the understated elegance was striking. But the fuschia is gorgeous in the pictures.

A mistake many brides make, myself included is to underestimate how much color is stolen from from the clothing in photos. A lot of my soft, pale pinks got eaten by the glare from the sun and the photographer’s flash. So it was with my brother’s wedding. The gorgeous gold dresses just show up as yellow in the photos. I think that the strong fuschia will endure in those photos. Of all my bridesmaid pictures, the one with the burgundy dresses really still stand out. The pastels really wash out.

Brooklynborndad, Thanks for the explanation. I’m glad to have such knowledgeable cyber friends. :)

No- but we can grow lilies & confederate jasmine ( not as showy as Gardenias- but evergreen & the scent is lovely)

Happy anniversary, missypie! I like Chelsea’s dress up close, too. I didn’t like it in the distance photos - it looked like a small top with a huge flouncy skirt - but in the closeup I can see the incredible, creative detailing in the skirt, and the dress looks more unified.

I really like the veil with the missing, or minimal, headpiece.

emeraldkty, thank you for identifying the flower.

Yes, Hillary was wearing the anti-SoS-dress! I imagine she saw this occasion as an opportunity to break out from her usual uniform. And I don’t think she had much of a wedding herself, or ever dressed up when she was young. This may have been her first fancy dress, ever.

^^ well, other than a couple of inaugural balls, few state dinners, and a multitude of other functions she attended as the First Lady of Arkansas and USA ;)

^^ Of course, you’re right, ihs76! Blame the neuron lapses on a sleepless night last night.

NYMomof2, I actually love that for a moment, we forgot that H had been first lady and were only focusing on her as S of S. That would make her very happy.

a lot of people really like that she wore something different than what she usually wears, which is more of the tailored look
( maybe she was reading the CC suggestions for MOB)

I think outdoor wedding wear could be more difficult than evening wear- cause you want to look summery- but not too " young" and you need something fitted so you don’t look matronly which most of us have a tendency towards at this point- but not " sexy", and you can’t really wear much jewelry which would dress it up ( but she doesn’t anyway)

but I am dying to know if the brides parents paid for the whole thing or if they went halfsies!
;)

I agree, missypie. I think of her as senator, presidential candidate, SofS, and I’d blanked on the fact that she was spent a lot of time as first lady!

I loved both dresses, but I’ll admit I got a kick out of Jimmy Kimmel’s comment that the MOB “wore something tasteful from The Men’s Warehouse.” I also like Hillary’s hair. I have not liked the Brady Bunch flip she has been sporting lately. No one - not even Carol Brady - looks good with that style.

“Brooklynborndad, thank you for the explanation! So in traditional Jewish law, Jewish status is embedded in the person’s mitochondrial DNA.”

Not completely, because its possible to convert to Judaism (which some of us were hoping Chelsea would do), after which one is a full fledged member of the Jewish people, and one’s children (if you are female) are born Jewish.

I’m not a huge fan of Hillary’s dress; it looks like a fairy godmother’s dress. Great color, though-- better on her than the gray is on her mother. I love the hair on all three women, though. And the more I see of Chelsea’s dress the more I think it’s gorgeous.

Many of the historical reasons for matrilineal descent have to do with the Diaspora (the dispersion of the Jewish people away from the Holy Land following the destruction of the Second Temple). Jews faced a great deal of anti-Semitism and with it came violence, including rape. While one may have doubts about the identity of the father, one was certain about the identity of the mother. Hence, Judaism passed through the mother. (Of course, the Orthodox would say that it’s matrilineal because that’s God’s will.)

Ivanka Trump converted through an Orthodox conversion (I believe). Donald Trump will have Jewish grandchildren.

I did read that Ivanka Trump converted to Judaism. If it is indeed orthodox sect of Judaism, is it required for her to stick to kosher, head covering, Shabbos rules? My H works with a number of Jewish employees and they vary from strictly following the religious rules–those who are orthodox, to those who are reform and celebrate Christmas.

It’s certainly a lovely photo of three generations of women. But I have to say that, while I love the color of HRC’s dress, I think it looks like a bad choice of prom dress from the late 60s. Wait, maybe she’s reusing an old bridesmaid dress? No… there was a designer involved… what was he thinking?
