Chinese Thread

hey…i’m just curious

the College Board says no SAT and other exams are administered in China (correct me if i’m wrong please)…so what do u guys do for standardised tests???

they are administered in China, but only in Hong Kong.
so students have to fly there to take them.
which is too expensive for a lot of students & their families:(

howcome CB’s not got any centres at Beijing or Shangai…after all China’s one of the biggest senders of students to the US

Thanks for the suggestions and encouragement, guys!!
Yes, I’m applying for finaid. Arghh~such a long and weary process…><
I understand that my ECs are weak…:frowning: but I’m trying to give them a boost somehow.
Thanks for the tips about the ECs and stuff, they’re really helpful!!
And I am going to apply for some safety colleges RD, I only listed Harvard and Stanford as possible EAs.
BTW, what do you guys think my ‘match’ schools might be with current stats and ECs?
Thanks again~

how is ur EC weak? not enough things outside ur class? maybe… but u cant put all those things on their anyway (not enough room), so pick which ones are important to u, and show they are important to u in ur essays, and it might be good to also have a fav hobby (guitar maybe) and anything MEANINGFUL TO YOU outside of skool

*Editor and writer of school newspaper (10-11th)
*Piano 10 yrs/violin 4 yrs/clarinet 2 yrs/ guitar 1 yr

i think these is ur best ECs, unless those awards have alot of meaning in them… like, it was hard to win, u had a long term goal for them, they show ur strength (or u feel like u can make ppl believe u did)

*Honorary Award A (meaning top three of class in both academic and moral grades) (10th, 11th)
*Won a prestitious scholarship for English (10th)

i dont think this is EC but there’ll be a place for awards, and idk about all those awards but these sounds the best (i m more of a science guy so…).

look over the harvard app (i think they only use common), the stanford app is due first (out of private skools) but theres really no copy of it online… its gonna have alot of essays tho… write about sth that can be backed up by the rest of ur application but also is not just repeating what they know… the most important thing is to show ur skill in the classroom and in life in general, but indirectly w/ a real topic and passion

then again i didnt get into mit so yea… i m not that good and everythings to be taken w/ a grain of salt (if u know what that means) but i honestly think what i sed can help all u juniors/sophmore out there

who knows how many chinese people (including descendants) living in

1: the whole US
2: california
3: los angles.

thanks ! i am just curious about this.

i bet there are a lot

wikipedia/Overseas_Chinese

lol youknowme… thats very specific

i need to write a research paper for econ… any ideas for good topics??? im thinking… monetary policy?— undervalue of RMB… i get so many opposing opinions on this, i just came back from a harvard review panel (china’s next step) and a lot of people were still disagreeing with each other.

or how about… luxury spending? chinese people are spending way more on luxury goods in relation to fraction of their income… now luxury by definition of armani is suppose to represent a status, but if u have to save for an entire year to buy a vuitton bag, is that really a representation of status??? thats like… 打肿了脸充胖子

econ paper, if you search google video, there will be some documentaries about macro economic policies. they might be too old, i bet they were made ten years ago. anyway, some docs present some rare views. one of the main stream econ documentary series, Commanding Heights, features a number of world class economists, such as then Jeffery Sachs of Harvard(now at Columbia, rummor that he’s not going along summers), his shock therapy was quite radical. anyway, if you got long hours, Commanding Heights is great for draw the economic picture of 20th and 21st century.
i heard harvard implemented some economic advisory program in russia. but that program is under a lot of criticism now…the details are too long, i don’t even have time to read them all. that harvard alum wrote like 100 pages about it.
nowadays, a lot of people are panicking about the highest debts in history – 7 trillion usd. what can government do to clear it? i don’t know if any of your econ class taught about debt free currency… i only heard it once, complicated stuff for me.
and free trade, the member countries in WTO suppose to abide wto constitutionbut ideally judging, a lot of them don’t…
…good luck…
i got screwed upside down on my micro-econ exam

o but tang! u seem like u are always interested in current affairs. i imagine u probably did well

Hey… I have a question. Do you guys think I would be able to get into a pretty good university in China if I only attended high school in America and last two years of education in an international school. So my Chinese would be pretty weak but I still have good grades.

why would you want to go to a Chinese university if you have the opportunity to go to an American college?

Well, my dad owns a number of buildings in China so my parents want me to live in China and takeover those buildings from my dad.

oh no…i feel as if the younger generation(aka the people one year younger than me, xo, tangs, yryuan, yy…all the ancestors of this thread in general) are taking over this thread!!JK JK
wow,AzN,are u serious?where do your dad own these buildings?or is it all over the place?you’re lucky then.i would SOOO want to go to college in china.for all the wrong reasons of course.

wow…what can I say. If you really want to go to a Chinese college, then go ahead. I don’t know how good you are, but generally it’s extremely hard to get into top Chinese universities, even the smartest need to put in a lot of effort. Being weak at Chinese also puts you at a very disadvantaged place, because there is a Chinese test included in the college entrance exam (not easy trust me). but again, I don’t know how do you define “a good university.” if you are just refering to a decent one, and you will happen to be taking the entrace exam in Shanghai or Beijing, you still have a good chance to get in a decent college. So don’t go for Chinese universities if you don’t really have to. If you really have to, you need to work your ass off to get in a top college.

I definitely think you should’nt go to a university in China just because right now the education system is wack. Going to an american university doesn’t mean you’r going to stay here. SOOOO many asians get western educations and then work in china.

good point xo. First of all you can always go back to China after graduating from an American college. Second I personally think the college entrance exam is just too overwhelming for a kid educated in America.

the education system in china… is like… hard to get in, easy to come out. in america, its more like easier to get in, harder to come out. its hard to GET in to a good chinese university. but the school itself is actually not hard. my cousin at xian jiao da, she told me no one went to class, and everyone just crams like 1 month before exam, and its not very hard to graduate teachers dont want to fail u, they might just give u a D or something. That might happen at some colleges with lower academic standards, but i know that in most of the good LACs and top national colleges, just because you got in doesn’t mean u get to party it up. there are so many stories of people who got in to schools like MIT and then dropped out cuz they couldnt handle the academics and partied too hard. if u want to LEARN ACTUAL skills, u should go to a western school, esPECially american. u know, even with the economy sliding, and i think american universities still live up to standards. a lot of the things in chinese universities are like: 看看就好别当真 and u will never actually use it

aint all “AzN” accounts by koreans?

and yea goto US college is even better for getting chinese job, but that dont change that u need to learn the culture
