choose Sing or US

Hi guys,
I am really confused, help me please!!! I have awarded full scholarship by
Wesleyan College in Georgia, US. I also received ASEAN schoalrship to go
to NUS, Singapore.
I like US better and already have visa to US. CAn I ask which school in US has generous finaid for International transfer student? Is it hard to transfer to top school from unknown school like Wesleyan college

NUS
Advantages:

 • top 18 world ranking

coed-> sex balance is very important

Not sure about the exchange program

can have profound relationship with other Vietnamese

Disadvantages:

Singapore, small and industrialized

heavy work load

3 years bond-> less chance of graduate study

Wesleyan college:
Advantage:

 • US -> traveling, I LIKE TO BE FAR FAR AWAY -> the most important thing

liberal arts experience-> good academically ( but not as good as NUS) but I can study things I like besides economics

can have Vietnamese friends from other school ( though difficult)
Disadvantage:

No reputation

have to work hard to apply to top grads school (less chance than if I study in NUS)

Wesleyan is not unknown among colleges, but transfer admission to top schools is extremely competitive. Only enroll at Wesleyan if you would be happy to spend all your undergraduate years there.

NUS is overrated. It doesn’t deserves this ranking.

@Abhi…I’m sure it doesn’t “deserves” this ranking, but it very much does DESERVE it.

hi lephuonganh,

Where did you get the info that NUS is ranked 18th worldwide? On Newsweek’s ranking, it’s about 36th…But that ranking is not accurate at all like Carnegie Mellon University is ranked 75th LOL.

I’m sorry to say NUS isn’t prestigiously recognized in America as well as Wesleyan.

LOL this is a no-brainer.

Go for Wesleyan.

if you give up on your US experience, you are going to look back and regret your decision when you are in NUS.

I don’t know about this statement at all. Wesleyan University is fairly well known and it is a great school. Wesleyan College on the other hand, the one in Georgia, is one I had never heard of until your post. (I hope I don’t offend anyone by saying that.)

If I were you, I would go with NUS if Wesleyan College is your only choice.

Wesleyan University is in Connecticut. All the other people who have posted recommending you go to Wesleyan, I would bet a lot of money, assumed you were talking about the university.

If it were the university, I too would recommend going there.

look, here’s the dealio from a singaporean.

ed, i’m sure u’d post to chime in on my sentiments after i’m done. let’s double team—wait, that sounds kinda wrong.

NUS IS OVER-RATED. it’s ********. sure, u’re not headed to wesleyan university (u guys need to note that she’s referring to wesleyan college), but let me point out some misconceptions u have:

liberal arts experience-> good academically ( but not as good as NUS) but I can study things I like besides economics

have to work hard to apply to top grads school (less chance than if I study in NUS)

both are off. big time. ok, maybe i’m generalizing, but somehow, i’m of the sentiment that u’d have a better shot at a top grad sch in the STATES after studying IN THE STATES. moreover, u’re free to do what u want, instead of being tied down by a 3 yr bond, which shd u accept the sg scholarship, u bloody well appreciate it and not whine abt the bond–there’s enough latent displeasure against foreign ‘talents’ in singapore, let’s not stoke it further by whining abt the bond.

next, abt the quality of education, haha, any singaporean would tell u that u’re NOT going to get a gd liberal arts education. this is a country fueled by cut-throat competition, so u’d be quite the fool to venture that much out of ur major (unless of course those electives complement economics in getting u the big bucks–stuff like statistical math). there is no freedom here, NO NOTHING.

go with ur heart. u said u prefer the US, head there. c’mon, why stick ard in ASEAN regions? take a chance, head out while u’re still young. u do realize that college comes ard just once, yes?

Hi lephuonganh,

I believe the decision comes down to three major factors:

Geographical location.

Based on your preferences, I say you are better off studying in US since you want to be far away from Vietnam (I am presuming you are a Vietnamese.). A good college experience largely depends on the kind of people you meet, and you sound like you are really interested in meeting a diversified group of people .According to Wikipedia (I know this is not a good reference, but I cannot afford the time to do an extensive research for you.), “students from more than 20 states and 20 countries around the world attend the school each year.” On the other hand, the vast majority of NUS population comes from Singapore (duh) and the ASEAN region. So, it is basically Asians that you get in NUS.

Educational quality.

albert87 and hoeman have said NUS is overrated. I agree with them, and hardly any Singaporean believes the ranking that NUS so proudly touts.

If you are seeking a liberal arts education, then you should go to the school that prides itself on providing one, i.e. Wesleyan College. The term “liberal arts” is rarely, if ever, uttered in NUS.

Where you want to work after graduation.

If you intend to work in the ASEAN region, I can frankly say NUS enjoys a better reputation than Wesleyan College. On the other hand, if you intend to work or go to graduate school in US, I say both are on par.

I am sorry I cannot tell you more about what actually goes on in NUS and Wesleyan, since I have not studied in these institutions before. Sometimes, you should go with your gut feeling and from your first post, I think you are more swayed towards Wesleyan than NUS.

And congrats to you for getting full rides at both places.

chad michael michaels is ice skating!

BOOM!

go NUS if you want the real experience

i present to you, EXHIBIT A.

iann is what is commonly known as a ■■■■■. he lives under bridges and pops out to eat children. the trick is to read fairy tales and learn some techniques to deal with such creatures. ■■■■■■ eat children because they are XENOPHOBIC. they’re afraid of people venturing into their turf for fear of competition.

key word: XENOPHOBIC. connect the dots.

NUS is ranked #18 in THES.

Use Shanghai Jiaotong instead if you doubt THES, but NEVER Newsweek!!! Newsweek is full of rubbish (UCLA ahead of Princeton LOL !!!)

It seems that everyone in CC believes that NUS is over-rated!

Why is this so?

To answer the OP question, choose Sing. Although I too feel that NUS is somewhat over-rated too! But that’s just my personal opinion. No offence to NUS peeps.

cost wise, choosing USA is more preferable

the OP has got a full scholarship to USA. attending a college at USA is very expensive. so it is a hard to come by opportunity

attending NUS is easy and a lot of people also have the tuition grant… it is very common

also, a foreign degree comes with it the experience.

so i advice the OP to USA.

Take it from a Singaporean who is studying at a LAC in the US now, go to Wesleyan.

@spencer11111

What’s wrong with Newsweek’s ranking? Did UCLA reject you? LOL

The THES is POS…Cornell University is ranked lower than Beijing University, and NUS is ranked higher than Johns Hopkins University, UCLA , Umich…What’s a dumb ranking LOL

Also in the THES’ technology university ranking, NUS’ ranked higher than Cal Tech…LOL
