“dad’s crazy spreadsheets” vs. “Magic 8 Ball” That will slow things down every time. Leave out the 8 ball next time. :)

^^^ The problem is that I am pretty sure that the Magic 8 Ball is more accurate than my spreadsheets :)

we did all kinds of predictions to where to apply and what are D’s chances. the most inaccurate predictor was the college board web site list of colleges you should apply given all kinds of scores etc…if D would have gone by that list she would be at the state school. Her high school had very few apply to others or enough track record to even guess. the most accurate? oldest D who hand picked a few schools- yes 100% accurate. Yup, UChicago.

rockymtnhigh - I agree that the College Board’s “match” provides some funky and totally inaccurate choices. It has the potential to be a great tool, but needs a major overhaul.

Final Decision: University of Maryland

My son decided on University of Maryland…but it was a tough choice over some other schools

Accepted:
University of Maryland, College Park,Smith School of Business
Tulane University ($20K/yr. scholarship)
TCNJ
Ohio University Honors Tutorial College ($8K/yr. scholarship)
University of Delaware
Rutgers University
Rider University Honors ($18K a year scholarship)

Rejected:
None

The first 4 listed above in my son’s mind all had very appealing aspects to it and it was a tough decision. The wild card was Ohio University HTC, which had some fantastic perks and really amazing individual attention to its students so this was tough to turn down. Tulane we know is great as our daughter is graduating there in a few weeks and will be staying and working in NOLA and TCNJ had a very charming and beautiful campus/academia feel to it, with smaller class sizes.

Good luck to all that go to these schools.

S has decided on Princeton! Great FA, close to home, happy Mom! Also accepted to UChicago where we thought he would go since he loved it but not as good FA as Princeton; accepted to Northwestern also, not accepted to Cornell or Harvard or Stanford. He felt bad turning down UChicago since they’ve been sending so much stuff since he was accepted EA in the fall, but, realizes what’s ahead at Princeton! Spent two days there for Preview and loved it. After he got the news I kept pinching myself. We are over the MOON!!!YAY!!!

Cheer up. While U Penn is definitely more urban, and definitely a larger university, it is also definitely NOT more prestigious than Dartmouth, and definitely not a “better school.” Dartmouth’s undergraduate education is the most highly “rated” in the nation, FWIW. She can go to a larger urban university for grad school if she wishes.

ohmy gosh congrats!!! can you pls tell me your stats profiles??? i reaaaaally wanna go to mccombs

Hi anotherconcerned,
That must be hard and I’m sure you have your reasons. Honestly, you cannot go wrong with either school, and if she’s already decided, your daughter must feel Dartmouth is a better fit for her. I understand what you’re saying, but depending upon your major one school might be better for you (Penn/Dartmouth). Despite both being Ivies, they are quite different. Penn is very pre-professional, and as a previous poster mentioned, quite stressful. My son is a rising junior at Penn, and while we’re very happy, there have been times when I have lamented the fact he did not go to a smaller school, in fact, Dartmouth, particularly since he just changed his major from Bio-Eng to Pre-Med, a surprise for all of us. Not easy to do mid-stream, especially at that level. Thankfully we are pretty naive about how all that works, but are quick learners. (*otherwise we’d be having nervous breakdowns around our house)

What does your daughter plan to major in? Dartmouth is a wonderful school and I wish her success. I understand your worries, but I’m sure they will be quickly relieved once she gets there and you see how well she settles in. I too had a pit in my stomach when my son had to write those May 1st ‘no thank-you’ responses to all of the great schools he was admitted to…It was hard to know if he had made the right choice, but the bottom line was that HE felt he had, so we had to support him in that decision. And I have to admit I felt a bit sad for all those kids who were denied those admissions and would have given anything to trade places with him.

Best wishes! Hope things go wonderfully for your daughter. In the end it’s truly what they do once they get there; how much they take advantage of what the school has to offer, and what they can bring to the school in return
CCL

My son has decided to go to Brown.

He turned down Chicago, Notre Dame, Wash U, William & Mary, Ohio State and Arizona State.

He is one happy young man, and his parents are thrilled.

Daughter accepted and will attend Washington and Lee over Vanderbilt, SMU, Georgia, and Alabama.

I don’t think I ever posted daughter’s decision here – we have a separate thread for this over on the CC Visual Arts board.

Accepted to Parsons, Pratt, PrattMWP, SMFA, Otis, PNCA, SAIC.
Denied at MICA, RISD, Cooper Union.

Will attend PNCA (Pacific Northwest College of Art) as a Dean’s Scholar.
Decision was 80% money and 20% wanting to be near her brother, who is at Reed.

Daughter will attend Cornell University CAS. Go Big Red!!! She remains on the Princeton waitlist.

Accepted: Cornell, Bucknell, UC Berkeley (Regents), UC Santa Cruz (Regents), UCLA, UCSD

Denied: MIT, Harvey Mudd, Williams, Stanford

Waitlisted: UChicago, Princeton

After two early writes (Wesleyan and Swarthmore), five RD acceptances (Vassar, Kenyon, Haverford, UCLA, and Berkeley) and six wait lists (Amherst, Williams, Midd, Princeton, Harvard, and UPenn), my D got the call yesterday (right before CC went down) from…

PRINCETON!

It was of course exciting and incredibly unexpected. She was perfectly content with the school she’d chosen (Swat), but she always wanted to go to P (ever since we visited the campus when she was a sophomore).

I still can’t believe it. I don’t think I will until the Princeton Envelope arrives.

Thanks to all you fellow CC’ers for giving me a place to both commiserate and celebrate. :)

I’ve spent most of my time on the 2010 thread, but I guess I can post here too. :)

S2 was accepted at U of Chicago (EA), Tufts, Vassar and American (honors program, Pres. Scholar). Reject by Georgetown, Harvard, and Brown.

After much agonizing about turning down Chicago, he decided Tufts was a better fit. (He’s interested in International Relations and while nerdy, he wasn’t sure he was enough of an academic for Chicago.) He liked Tufts emphasis on action and not just study.

D was accepted at NHIA (New Hampshire Institute of Art), KCAI (Kansas City Art Institute), and MCAD (Minneapolis College of Art and Design). Hard choice as she was offered merit aid for all, MCAD won out in the end. Very pleased with her decision!

D1 sent deposit to Oberlin. Still holding out shred of hope to get off Mudd waitlist. What do people think about the Mudd waitlist this year for class of 2014?

Congratulations to your son, Elizabethh! I, too, have a son who is a junior with a less than 3.0 average. Have been worried nonstop, hoping he won’t have to go to community college. So glad to hear less than stellar students do get accepted!!! Hooray!!

maxmaslow - They’re expecting to take one or two people off their alternate list later this summer.

I just opened my accetance letter for the Minneapolis College of Art and Design(MCAD). I was already informed by email that I got in but that paper copy is really nice to have. I’m an average student so I was very excited when I got in.
