Dear portugueseninja,

The Admissions Committee has carefully reviewed your application to the University of Chicago. After much consideration, I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a place in the Class of 2014. This year’s applicant pool was the strongest in the university’s history; in light of this, we were unable to offer admission to every worthy applicant.

I recognize that this message may come as a disappointment to you. Nevertheless, I encourage you to make your future educational plans with the same enthusiasm and initiative that led you to consider us.
We appreciate the interest you have shown in the University of Chicago. Best wishes as you pursue your educational goals.

Sincerely,
James G. Nondorf
Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid

Among the many tasks faced by the Colgate admission staff, by far the most difficult responsibility we have is to notify a student that we are unable to offer admission. We appreciate the interest you have shown in Colgate and the dedication reflected in your academic and personal record, but after careful review of our applicant pool, I am sorry to inform you of our conclusion that we cannot offer you a position in the Colgate Class of 2014.

The admission process this year was highly competitive. We have reviewed applications from more than 7,800 talented students for 760 places in the class. In recent years we have enjoyed an increasing level of interest from very talented students. One consequence of this stronger applicant pool is that we must disappoint many students who certainly could meet the challenge of a Colgate education and contribute to life on campus. Our decision to deny admission is very much a reflection of this competitive situation in which we do not have room to admit many fine candidates.

I trust that you have identified some alternate college choices that will provide the academic challenge you seek. If your interest in Colgate continues, however, you are welcome to apply for admission as a transfer student once you have completed one year of college work in the liberal arts at another institution.

Joanne, I am sorry that the news today is not pleasant. I received notifications like this myself so I know how you feel. We remain grateful to you for choosing to apply to Colgate and respect the effort you devoted to your application and preparation for college. We also hope the remainder of your senior year will be filled with a sense of optimism and excitement as you make plans to complete high school and begin your college years. I do want you to know that the admission committee at Colgate wishes you the very best success throughout the future.

Sincerely,
Gary L. Ross
Vice President and Dean of Admission

It is with regret that I write to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission to the freshman class at Stanford University. Please know that this decision does not necessarily reflect any deficiency or weakness in your application. To the contrary, we are humbled by your talents and achievements, and are impressed with the commitment that you have shown in all of your academic and extracurricular endeavors. It is unfortunate, and truly our loss, that we are not able to offer admission to more students from our exceptionally talented applicant pool.

We appreciate the thoughtfulness and care that went into your application and want to assure you that your candidacy received thorough and serious consideration. This decision should in no way detract from the very impressive credentials that you presented; due to the large number of applications that we receive for a comparatively small incoming class, we must unfortunately disappoint the vast majority of our applicants each year.

You should know that we arrive at all admission decisions by way of an exhaustive committee review process. As a result, all application decisions are final, and we are unable to consider appeals of any kind. To find answers to some of the most commonly asked questions regarding our admission process, click here. These should address many of the questions and concerns that you may have. I hope that any disappointment you may feel at this decision is tempered by the justifiable pride you should have for your accomplishments to date, academic and otherwise. To that end, I share with you an article I wrote for the Los Angeles Times in 2003 and have updated to be current for today.

I know this is not the news you hoped to receive, and for that reason we will not send a duplicate notification of this decision by mail unless you request one from us. If you wish to request an additional copy of this letter by mail, you may do so here.

ace, you are a fine student and I want to thank you for your interest in Stanford, and the effort that you put into your application. I wish you the very best for an outstanding undergraduate experience.

Sincerely,

Richard H. Shaw
Dean of Admission and Financial Aid

The Admissions Committee has completed its review of your application, and I am so sorry to tell you that we are unable to offer you admission to MIT.

Please understand that this is in no way a judgment of you as a student or as a person, since our decision has more to do with the applicant pool than anything else – many of our applicants are not offered admission simply because we don’t have enough space in our entering class. This year we had over 16,600 candidates for fewer than 1,600 offers of admission, from which will come our 1,000 freshmen. Since all of our decisions are made at one time and all available spaces have been committed, all decisions are final.

I am very sorry to bring you this disappointing news, and I wish you the very best as you continue with your education.

Thank you for your interest in Reed College and for the time and effort you put into your application for admission. We enjoyed learning about you through the materials you sent to us.

Unfortunately, the Reed College admission committee has decided to deny your application for fall 2010 admission. This year we received 3,075 applications for 355 spaces in the incoming class. Inevitably a significant number of applicants who might have been good students in our classrooms and contributing members of our community must be turned away each year.

On behalf of the admission committee, thank you for giving us the opportunity to review your application. We wish you the very best as you continue your education.

Sincerely,

Kristine Sawicki
Acting Dean of Admission
Reed College

Thank you for applying to the Harvey Mudd Class of 2014. Our Admission Committee faced a daunting task this year. We received a record number of applications, over 2700, a fifteen percent increase over last year. In addition, the size of the incoming class must shrink by a small but significant margin. We made every effort to be fair and consistent. After weighing all aspects of your application, we are unable to offer you admission to our freshman class.

We hope you understand that this was a very difficult decision. We are humbled by the talents of our applicants and know that the vast majority would be successful at Harvey Mudd College. However, HMC is committed to keeping a small and intimate learning environment, and thus the size of the freshman class is limited.

On behalf of the Admission Committee, we want to emphasize how much we appreciate your interest in Harvey Mudd College. Please accept our best wishes for your success in your future educational plans.

Sincerely,
Thyra L. Briggs
Vice President for Admission and Financial Aid

Hahaha you guys are amazing. I deleted all my rejection letters but the one that ripped my heart out, so here goes:

Dear Quasi:
After a thorough review of your application for admission to Amherst College, the Committee on Admission has decided, with regret, not to hold a place for you in the Class of 2014.

Nearly all of the candidates whose applications we reviewed were academically qualified and had the enthusiastic support of their teachers and guidance counselors. Selecting among those applicants was a daunting task. Be assured, however, that each application was reviewed at length, that recommendations were scrutinized, that transcripts were interpreted with care, and that every case was reviewed more than once.

Our decision does not represent a judgment of your capacity to do successful work here, nor is it an estimate of the contribution you might have made to Amherst. Rather, that decision is a reflection of the fact that we had a record 8,085 applications from which to select a first-year class of 465 people.

I am confident that your interest in Amherst is a significant reflection of your high aspirations and that those aspirations will serve you well in your collegiate experience and beyond. I appreciate your interest in Amherst and wish you much deserved success in the future.

Sincerely,
Katharine L. Fretwell
Director of Admission
Senior Associate Dean of Admission

“I am confident that your interest in Amherst is a significant reflection of your high aspirations” - most pretentious line ever or what?!

The International Admissions Committee has reviewed your application for admission to Oberlin College and regrets that we are unable to offer you admission to the College of Arts and Sciences.

We expect that our decision is disappointing to you. We have had our largest and most talented international applicant pool ever; there were many more qualified applicants than available spaces. Consequently, we have had to disappoint a significant number of those who applied for admission including many who we are confident would have thrived at Oberlin. We assume that you will have other choices and believe that you will make a good selection.

An official, hardcopy letter of decision has been mailed to you but we wanted you to know our decision without delay. We wish you all the best in your search for a university or college that is ideal for your interests and needs as you continue your education.

Sincerely,

Charles Grim
Senior Administrator for International Development
Oberlin College of Arts & Science

Thank you for your application to Brandeis University. The Committee on Admissions has fully reviewed your application. While your academic and personal accomplishments are noteworthy, we regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a place in the Class of 2014.

Given the combination of limited space and an exceptional applicant pool, the decision to deny your application was not an easy one. More than any other single factor, Brandeiss continuing commitment to remain a small university affected the scale of our decisions. I want to assure you that our staff devotes a great deal of time and attention to each students file and that your credentials received the fullest consideration.

I realize this letter may be disappointing for you. However, I am confident that you will receive admissions offers from a number of excellent institutions and that you will enjoy an exciting collegiate experience. On behalf of the Committee on Admissions, I thank you for your interest in Brandeis and wish you every success in the fulfillment of your educational and personal goals.

Sincerely,
Jean C. Eddy
Senior VP of Students and Enrollment

I was deeply impressed with your application. You are indeed a very talented student and exceptional young man. Your photography slides were enjoyed immensely. You were able to capture in pictures the simple everyday beauty of your country and you should not think it went unnoticed.

I cannot emphasize the difficulty of how challenging making such decisions were for the admission committee. Whether it makes any difference or not, I think you must know that I was very clear on your strengths academically and your sincere passions beyond the classroom which reflected your exceptional nature. My words may seem hollow to you as I was not able to send the most important news you were awaiting to hear. Nonetheless, I must emphasize to you that I hope and trust that you will NOT give up on yourself. That would be unfortunate.

You must know that you are in exceedingly good company with several other wonderfully talented students from Nepal that we simply were not able to offer admission. I have been working with many other students from your country whom like you I know are destined to do very well in life but were not able to be offered admission either to Lafayette. The financial pressures facing our college and other smaller liberal arts colleges for that matter this year made the application review process ultra selective and incredibly competitive in a way that left me disheartened because I was not able to successfully advocate for all of the incredibly high-achieving young people I would have wished to have at Lafayette – yourself included.

In the end, I trust (and sincerely hope) my words can provide you with at least a little solace. Believe me when I say this… I have had the pleasure to work with well over 1,100 international applicants this year from over 95 countries worldwide. I can’t remember all of them because of the sheer volume I am required to review. I remember you well even so and your application made a memorable impression and impact on me. Please always keep this in mind. I send my best wishes to you in any regard and will remain hopeful for you despite your ability at this point to be hopeful for yourself.

Sincerely,

Dear donod,
All of the decision letters for regular decision candidates were mailed from Vassar on Thursday, March 25. However, we realize that international mail can be quite slow at this time of year, so below you will find the text of the letter which was sent to you late last week. Hopefully, your formal letter will arrive shortly as well.

Dear donod:

The Committee on Admission has completed its deliberations on candidates for the Class of 2014 and unfortunately has decided that we will be unable to offer you admission to Vassar. Applications to Vassar reached an all-time record high level this year, with more than 7800 candidates for a freshman class of 660 students. Unfortunately, this level of competition dictates that we must deny admission to many fine candidates.

I wish that I could write with better news, and I assure you that our decision was a difficult one to make. We appreciate your interest in Vassar, and offer our best wishes for a successful and rewarding college experience.

Sincerely,

After careful review of your application by the members of the AdmissionsCommittee, I am sorry to inform you that we cannot offer you admission to Carleton College. I know this is disappointing news and certainly not what youor we had hoped for.

Each year competition for a space in Carleton’s entering class is very keen. Many well-qualified candidates like yourself present fine academic records andstrong personal qualities. Our large number of applicants and relatively smallentering class size, rather than personal qualities, are often the reasons forour having to deny admission to promising candidates like yourself. We simplycannot accommodate all who apply.

As thorough and fair as we attempt to make our selection process, we may attimes suffer from shortsightedness. Your fine achievement to date and in futurecollege endeavors may well prove just how shortsighted we can be. TheAdmissions Committee thanks you for your interest in Carleton and wishes youmuch success in your further studies.

I am sorry to bring you disappointing news. The admission committee at Wesleyan is unable to offer you admission for the Fall of 2010. I know this decision is not what you had hoped for and want to assure you that we spent a good deal of time evaluating your application, including your essays and your letters of recommendation.

One of the most difficult tasks we have in the Office of Admission is choosing a freshman class from the many talented candidates who apply. Given the keen competition this year, we find we are unable to offer admission to many students who clearly have the ability to succeed and to contribute.

Although we are not able to offer you a place at Wesleyan, I am confident you will do well in the college you choose. The admission staff joins me in wishing you every success.

We have had the opportunity to complete our review of international candidates for Union’s Class of 2014 and I regret to inform you that we are unable to offer you a place in the first year class.

As you may know, Union has had record numbers of applications in recent years, which force us to make difficult decisions. Most students’ applications present appealing academic and personal information but space constraints intervene. We select from nearly 5,000 applications to enroll a class of 565, which makes competition for admission especially keen.

We appreciate your interest in Union and truly wish you all the best in your future plans.

The Admissions Committee has carefully reviewed your application for admission to Lafayette College for the fall semester of 2010. You are a strong candidate and were given serious consideration within the highly selective pool of international applicants for admission and financial aid. We recognize your solid academic preparation and achievement and your potential to do successful course work at the post-secondary level.

Regrettably, we are unable to offer you a place in our class of 2014 since we cannot offer you any financial assistance. While we realize this is not what you had hoped to learn, we truly appreciate your interest in Lafayette and wish you much success in your future educational endeavors.

Sincerely,
Carol A. Rowlands
